View Full Version : Possible weird side effect?
Was wondering . . . today I've noticed that my bronchial tube hurts. Or is that what it's called? The tube that goes from the back of the throat into the tubes that go into the lungs. The main one.
Anyways . . . if I take a deep breath it hurts! I would say it hurts about 3 inches down from where that dent in the front of your neck is. Forgive me for biology is not my strong suit!
It almost feels like when I've had pneumonia or a really bad case of broncitis. With no other symptoms or no coughing or anything. I remember someone once mentioning they had a weird feeling similar to that from Strattera.
I've been on Wellbutrin now for 2 weeks. One week at 150 mg and now at 300. The only other side effects I have are occasional headaches and sometimes a ringing in my ears. But I also haven't really felt any benefits either. I'm a bit more positive and upbeat, but that's about it.
Thanks!
Gregster 06-07-04, 08:42 PM That is an odd side effect. What sort of pain is it? Is it a burning pain, like acid indigestion, or a dull ache?
I wouldn't think a drug like Wellbutrin would have a side effect like that. I would mention it to your Dr - it may be caused by something else (The headaches and ringing in the ears are likely from the Wellbutrin).
Regards,
Greg
I got achy muscles like a flu. Actually I had just gotten over a flu but it wasn't an achy muscle type flu. I didn't like Wellbutrin.
I don't know how to explain the pain. It's not like heartburn. I mean, it does not feel like acid reflux or anything like that. It's definitely from breathing deeply. I mean, the only time I feel the pain is when I take a deep breath. Like when my lungs fill to the max, then the pain hits. Once I let the breath go, the pain goes away.
I'll wait for a day or 2 and see if it goes away.
You know, I wonder, since Wellbutrin is a norepeniphrine reuptake inhibitor - that makes more adrenalin available in your body, right? Like the fight or flight thing. Okay, well, isn't one of the things that does is to open up your airways so you can take in lots of oxygen. So I wonder if that's it? My bronchial tubes being opened up to far or something weird like that?
Heck, I don't know, just a swag I guess.
Penultimate 06-07-04, 10:21 PM Welbutrin is great. Give it more time.
Is it possible that you didn’t completely swallow one of the pills and it’s stuck in there? That happened to me once. I had to drink half a dozen mugs of hot tea to dissolve it.
Of course it could be some unrelated infection or something too.
neuroangel 06-20-04, 10:36 PM I've been on Wellbutrin XL 300mg QAM since late febuary.
I was zoning in and out while having sharp pain in my head, not like a headache, more like the after-shock of a punch. It went away after 3 weeks.
The wellbutrin took 6 weeks to kick in fully, and I've been feeling much better ever since. I'm not depressed at all, a suicidal thought hasn't crossed my mind since early March, I'm not euphoric, I feel just right.
It's the other meds that are giving me weird side effects now...but I'm sorting it out.
Good luck with your meds!

Yeah - I had those weird sharp pains in my head too the other day!! The pain would last for a few seconds then stop. Then another few seconds, etc. That was weird.
But I think I'm finally starting to feel some benefits now. Don't know how to explain it but suddenly I've become "neater." Like my house is usually pretty trashed having a playful dog and parrots. Usually I would just wait until my normal Saturday cleaning to pick everything up. But I noticed that now if I see something that needs to be picked up, thrown out or moved or something, I just do it then and there.
Plus at work I actually cleaned off my desk today before I started to work. I usually just shove everything away to make an empty spot on my desk. :D
But this stuff took way longer than Lexapro to start to feel any effects at all. I've been on it 4 weeks now.
I think the panic response is hyperventilating with lots of fast short shallow breaths actually. The opposite of deep relaxing breaths.
Like the fight or flight thing. Okay, well, isn't one of the things that does is to open up your airways so you can take in lots of oxygen.
dixiepeep 11-02-04, 01:29 PM I had that same feeling with strattera. I noticed on some side effects that it says it can increase upper respiratory infection too. I would let doc know and since I have stopped taking the Strattera it has gone away for me. I just started on Wellbutrin today. I hope it gets better for you. I know It felt like you had some deep down irritation in the bronchial tube. I did end up with a nasty case of bronchitus in the end with Strattera. Hope it goes away
I can certainly relate to the surprise at how long Wellbutrin took to really kick in..........at four weeks my wife was convinced the stuff was worse than worthless. I was irritable and short-tempered. That was months ago and she and I are very happy with the effects now of Wellbutrin XL.
I seem to be "neater" now too; it has really become noticeable in my office which bears no resemblence to what it used to be like.
Mostly, I just seem more pro-active and effective and less of a procrastinator who waits until crisis time before getting busy.
I am of the opinion it was well worth the wait for Wellbutrin to kick in and the adjustment period to be over.

dixiepeep 11-03-04, 09:20 AM I dream of being neater. My husband does too. I should have know I had ADHD when I can not stand in one bathroom and brush my teeth. I end up moving my toothpaste and brush and floss to two bathrooms and have to backtrack to find them. I hope Wellbutrin helps with this.
janesays 11-08-04, 12:53 AM Okay the sharp pain in the head worries me becaue I too have experienced this. It's not just a head ache either.
dixiepeep 11-08-04, 08:15 AM I think the sharp pain goes away. I had it a couple of times too. I just hope I dont cuss someone out till the wellbutrin kicks in. I am so irritable.

Yes I have experienced this too. Sometimes higher up in my esophogus. The conclusion I came to is that the pill was getting stuck because now when I take it with lots and lots of water or milk it doesn't happen.
I should have know I had ADHD when I can not stand in one bathroom and brush my teeth. YEAH! What the heck is up with this?? I do this too! Its like I can't stand to just stand there and brush, I have to walk around the house where family tries to talk to me and of course I have to run back to the bathroom, spit and rinse, then go back to respond to.... woops, I forgot what I was going to say.
me too. Can't just stand there & brush midlessly, gotta keep busy & I'm not even the hyperactive type.
wow, me too. I'm inattentive type. and I don't have an ouce of hyperactivity. weird.
anyone else or is it some weird similarity between paulbf?
blueyemass1979 11-29-04, 07:03 PM I started doing this about 2 years ago, when it finally hit me that tooth brushing was not such a disgusting thing that I had to be safely inside the bathroom.
For me, the only thing that really overcomes the hyperactivity is shame of some sort, or being fully occupied by something. With brushing my teeth, the shame just isn't there now.
By the way, the reason you should stay at the sink to brush your teeth is the toothpaste stains on the floor or carpet when it falls out your mouth...also why you shouldn't wear a shirt.
wow, me too. I'm inattentive type. and I don't have an ouce of hyperactivity. weird.

its weird, I can't think of any other activity like this where I must walk around, lol
Oh I used to be like that too when brushing my teeth! I would walk around the house while brushing my teeth. Then my mouth would almost start to burn from having too much toothpaste foam in my mouth that I couldn't get back to the sink fast enough. Depending on how far off I had wandered. :D But with my meds, now, I don't do that anymore. Funny, until I read these last couple replies I had forgotten I used to do that!
I have to have something to read while brushing my teeth. Otherwise it's so boring, it makes me crazy.
Never tried walking around, because I fear I would leave toothpaste drool everywhere. (Pleasant image, eh?) ;)
Not neccessarily. Post your picture, and I'll tell you.
...lol, just kidding. :)
Does anyone here forget to brush their teeth? Pleasant picture, eh? :D
FightingBoredom 06-07-05, 11:49 AM Hey Kimo! Did the pain ever go away or you figure out what it was?
I just started WB about 10 days ago. Haven't had any side effects but I'm feeling benefits.
Just curious how things have gone over the past few months since it HAS been a while that you posted this.

It's been quite awhile since I have visited the forum. I never got an e-mail saying there were any replies to this!
Anyways, yes the pain went away. Very slowly over time, but it did go away. I think it was just one of those weird little things that happen while your body is trying to get used to new chemistry.
Are you still taking it?
I just started WB for anxiety mostly, I noticed when I get stressed or whatever I'll get pains in my jaw into my throught and neck. I told my doc and she gave me a muscle relaxer with WB for now. She said the pain from being tense would go away after a while, but for now I need to avoid tensing up (HAHAHA try having anxiety disorder and not tensing up) anyway... I know it's kinda an old topic but thought I'd put some new imput into it considering I just started with the same thing, lol.
Partly Sunny 10-30-05, 01:04 PM I can relate. I just started taking adderall a little over a week ago and have been experiencing a shortness of breath with labored breathing. It's like I have to breath really deep to feel like I'm getting enough air & oxygen into my lungs (sometime produces a yawn). As a result, my chest is a little sore.
Not sure though if this could be a result of my weaning off of lexapro with a lower dose which might in turn produce anxiety from withdrawal. Yesterday, I took my 20 xr of adderall in the morning and postponed taking the lexapro. Mid morning experienced labored breathing so decided to take the lexapro. I did experience some relief with this.
May take some time to nail this down since I'm weaning off of one thing and starting a new at the same time...
