I can't seem to mow the lawn in perfectly straight lines. Before you know it, patterns emerge-diamonds, 8's, loops, triangles etc. I was wondering if anyone else likes to get creative when behind the mower...

I do the same thing when I shave. My face is a mess.

Oh man, no, I don't mow often, but it's got to be in perfect lines! heheh

Lol. I worked as a landscaper to put myself through university and I would have gone nuts if I didn't come with creative lawn mowing techniques to keep it interesting. It's funny to hear from someone else who has a similar twist of mind.

My favourite was the checker pattern, alternating between the horizontal and vertical directions. And then the next week, twist it 90 degrees to create the same pattern, but on a diagonal slant. The circular spiral to the centre was also a mainstay.

Whatever keeps it fun and interesting!

exactly!!! I get bored or just lose my place! You are supposed to mow in different directions every week to keep it healthy. Thanks for the new pattern suggestions-think I will mow the Front lawn now and give the neighbours something to yabber on about!!

If you really want to get creative, try raising the cutting length to the highest level, then start from the centre and do a circular spiral out. As you move out, lower the cutting length gradully as you work towards the outside, creating some kind of three dimensional triangular shape on your front lawn. That'll get 'em talking! LOL!

We make mazes. It is amazing how people you don't know will wander into your maze. My students take awhile to get into the door.

I've tried creative lawn mowing... my lawn is just too darn small!

I've been talking to my kids and trying to convice them that we could do a "crop circle" type thing on the hillside that faces
the freeway. They keep muttering something about "tresspassing", the lil' killjoys.

This might be of interest to all the lawn artists among us:

About 15 yrs ago, in the spring, a large "mona lisa" appeared on a hillside just north of San Jose.

Apparently, months earlier, the artist had used sulfate of ammonia or lawn fertilizer to "draw" the shadows of the picture on the hillside. In the spring when the new grass grew on the hills, the picture mysteriously appeared.

thats cool erinj. If it had depicted someone from the bible I bet it would have been viewed very differently.

I've mowed a lot of lawns, and tend not to get more creative than spiraling in. Usually I just want to get done...

I have never done it the same way twice.

I'm with Steve.
I am not sure I can cut the grass the same way twice though. < g >

I go creative just by mowing it!

We often cut around all the clover patches so the bees can have it.

I suppose the most creative thing is to mow the front and ignore the back, or to quit when the lawn mower stops and won't crank back up. I'll try again in a couple of weeks! My husband mows in the sunlight if it's cool and in the shade if it's too hot. Is that creative enough?

Actually that works to the advantage of the lawn. Mowing in the same pattern over and over makes the grass grow back in a set pattern. Eventually your lawn looks "stripped." Also there is some benefit regarding making the grass stronger, I think.

I thought I was alone! I have to dig up some pictures of the design I did on a 1-2 acre property when it was really tall and I was bored. Ended up looking pretty cool. My grandmother wasn't as impressed as some of her neighbors though. She is a lawn junky! :)

Is that similar to a lawn jockey?
