Anyone else have them? I am terrified of spiders. You should see the lengths I go to to get them out of my house. I end up sick and trembling....I know better, but I can't help it. I just vaccuumed one from my ceiling and I'm still shaking. I feel so stupid.

Snakes, Spiders and Roaches are my biggest fears. But I detest tics too...and that bites because I love nature.

I do enjoy watching garden spiders spin their webs and I will leave them alone...just don't come into my house...lmbo

What is it about these little creatures? Why are we so afraid? I don't know when it began or why it continues in the face of reason, but I cannot make it go away!

Spirit,

You don't like tics. I tic every day. :-)

Yes I hate the slimey things. Snakes, spiders, roaches, mice. And the idea of stepping on a roach is disgusting cause of how it sounds. I will drown it in hair spray first.

Well, I was a tomboy and played with bugs. But when I was 11 I became terrified of grasshoppers and insects. I went through a ritual at bedtime of taking the sheets off my bed and checking them for bugs and also checking under the mattress, under the bed and behind the headboard.

Then when got married at 19 I became terrified of thunderstorms. I just recently got over that after about 20 years. The weird thing about the storms is that I also looked forward to when a storm was coming. I could watch the weather channel for days in anticipation of the next storm. Then I would go bezerk if it got really bad.

I went through counselling last year at my church for problems I had with fear in general and now I am much better.

For the last couple of years, I have had an irrational fear of flying. Close to panic attacks... my face goes numb, heart races, BP soars, fingers tingle, and I couldn't possibly fall asleep on an airplane like I used to. It's not due to 9/11/. Actually more due to a couple of somewhat bad experiences while flying (nothing totally major, but a couple of scary experiences for me and the other flyers). Now, I've got what I consider an irrational fear of flying, especially in windy or stormy weather, or in the winter, or at night.

All of this is rough, considering I travel to do my job (80% overnights during the key selling season) and I live in Michigan which means travel weather isn't always the greatest. :(

Getting information for you Eric....my brother had that terrible fear of flying....took a class several years ago...now has little to no fears of flying....will get info about class he took and get back with you soon...you shouldn't have to go through that....considering your job is so much flying....by the way, any other fears besides flying that you have????

Heights .... used to be spiders, i dont like them but i am not paralyzed at the sight of them anymore.. but heights can absolutely freeze me in my tracks. So, touring civil war battlefields as a hobby, I climb lots of rickety observation platforms with my boys. I wonder if they know how my innards turn to ice when they look over the edge or if they notice i stand right smack in the middle of the platform to maximize my distance from the sides? lol

I can't get on trains. It is not that I am overly scared of trains, but for some reason, everytime I get on a train (or a tram) I end up huddled in a corner, bawling, hyperventilating, and unable to talk, move, or stop shaking. The worst thing is that nobody understands, and when it comes to the crunch, my friends say "you'll be fine" and then freak out when I start to crumble.

Bridges and tunnels. I panic: close my eyes and hold my breath till it is over. There is one in particular one in California. It is made out of blasted rock. It is near the Lompoc Correctional facility south of Santa Barbara. It gets me everytime. I understand the structural engineering and everything, but it is still so frightening, that's why it's irrational I guess. I could never live in NYC. Too many bridges and tunnels, also I think I would fear all the buildings falling down on me in the city. They seem so close together. That sounds ridiculous. I absolutely love rollercoasters. Go figure.

I like spiders because they mind their own business, but I don't like anything that flys at me. Even moths freak me out. There are some big ol' flying cockroaches here on the Texas Gulf Coast that by all rights should be in contact with airport traffic control.

Lightning.....big time...panic attack...i can run from building to car or building to building on campus...but other than that...dont ask me to go outside. Its such a wierd fear too...a lot of people laugh, and sometimes I can be pretty good natured about it but really deep down, even a picture of lightning would freak me out....thunder doesnt bother me....just the lightning....ahahahahaha.....have a nice one

Being afraid of clowns is NOT irrational. They REALLY are weird. Have you read the book It by Stephen King? The movie has an even beter visual of the scary clown. My kids' great grandma gave them a little musical clown doll before she passed away a few years ago. That thing has not moved from the very back of the closet. Even ther they find it a little creepy. We insist they keep it for sentimental reasons.

Clowns freak me out, too. And so do mannequins...and those baby dolls with the eyes that open and close. Very, very, very spooky, creepy, gross....

Clowns sort of freak me out too....As how they LOOK -- and who they REALLY are -- tend to be different.....freaky.....(although Bozo was not too freaky)

I think the fear of clowns also has to do with the movie “Poltergeist”. Remember? The little boy’s clown lamp came alive and attacked him!

I have a big fear of wasps. I used to be afraid of bees too, but then I dated this guy who’s family owned an apple orchard. They had honeybees there to pollinate the trees. One day I was walking through the orchard and realized that I was surrounded by thousands of bees – and none of them cared about me, they were all just doing their jobs. It was then that I came to respect and appreciate bees. Unfortunately, I still have a big fear of wasps, yellow jackets in particular. But I am trying to conquer this fear by learning more about them. Learning the difference between a paper wasp (quite peaceful) a hornet (aggressive) and a yellow jacket (also aggressive) has made a difference. But I have to admit I am still afraid. The funny thing is that I have only been stung once in my life!

I'm scared of wasps too, but only because I've never been stung- so that's what I'm really scared of.

Spiders used to scare me, but living in an old house has made me get used to a few of them, great for the summertime flies that break into the house. Can't get over the big ones though; especially those really aggressive wolf spiders that jump! But on the good side, having spiders in your house is probably better than any other insect- especially because they prey on other insects.

Clowns are just wrong. Never seen 'It"; I'm still getting over "The Shining". And after seeing Ringu (the original of the Ring) I have a problem with wells.

Here's somethings totally irrational: blank TV screens and mirrors (in anticipation of the joke: it's not my own mug that scares me in the mirror :) )

There is something about blank reflective surfaces in the dark that really scares me. I would elaborate further, but I'm long-winded enough!

Dolls: just say NO NO NO NO NO!!!!! I lived with my Grandma for a year, and she has a disturbing obsession with collecting dolls. EVERY room of her house is filled floor to ceiling with dolls of all types and sizes. My bedroom was no different, and it seemed that every morning when I woke up (due to a poor memory I guess) I would swear that some of them had moved. And they all stared at me while I slept. It's pretty freaky living in a house where at leat 100 pairs of glazed blinky eyes are staring at you at once, fixed with permanant grins and smiles! I never watched "Chucky" either. I don't like manquins either.

Wow. I don't know if I feel comforted that other people's relatives share what I call the 'Doll Disorder' or if I'm even more scared that others do! Grandma collects the madame alexanders too, along with baby dolls, fasion dolls, antique dolls, precious moments- you name it. A few of them are even life-size. I have a theory though that this obsession is because her first born daughter died at the age of 3 or 4, so she's stuck on these eternally child-like figures. What about your friend's mom? Just a collector, or does it border on total obsessivness?

I hate dolls!

I hate bees, wasps, yellow jackets....I don't know if I would say it is a phobia. I also hate being cramped up, like sitting in a crowd on the floor. I used to be a Youth Group leader and we would have our meetings at kids houses and everyone would sit on the floor. Sometimes there would be 70 to 100 kids at some of those meetings and I just hated being jammed in their on the floor, not able to stretch my legs out.

Another random "concern" was when I visited my wife before we were married when she was an exchange student in Costa Rica during college. Well we went to this great tropical beach and there were a lot of large iguanas walking around. I wasn't really afraid of them, but I left my backpack on the beach when we were in the water and they kept walking all over my bag and it really bothered me. I mean it bothered me a lot, like irrationally a lot. I got out of the water and scared them off, but they kept coming back every time we went back in the water.

I don't remember if her mom was obsessed...this was when I was in 4th-5th grade. Obviously, the experience has scarred me, though! LOL!

Barbies never really bothered me. Just those darn freak-eyed dolls....

i used to be terrified of butterflies and moths - butterflies more than moths, actually...
really weird, and i don't know *why* i was so afraid, but for years i couldn't even stand to see photos of butterflies without feeling physically ill...
nowadays, however, at least i'm able to keep myself from running inside as soon as i see a butterfly!

I hate ants with the white-hot intensity of a thousand suns. I hate the way they swarm, I hate the way they scout all over my house just looking for things of mine to violate. I will go out of my way to save any living creature I can, even saving spiders and setting them free outside. But ants? I can't get to the bottle of Raid fast enough. Death to them all.
I know that makes me sound like a psycho, but I get ticked off by how irrational my fear is, and it bugs me that I can't get over it! In fact, it seems to get worse as I get older. I guess it could be worse. Thank god for the Orkin man.

It's not always the size of a creature or the danger factor that makes it scary. I think it can be just the appearance of the creature alone. If it's really ugly or gross (even if it's quite tiny) many people don't want it near them.

I have an irrational fear of:

1) Spiders
2) Wasps/Bees/Flying Insects
3) Silence.

Silence gives me panic attacks. If I'm not busy with something and Im the only one around (especially at night), silence causes my mind to wander far too much, and I freak myself out.

When I was a kid, I used to run from my door and jump onto my bed as fast as I could...was scared to walk on the floor my room at night...dunno why.

I can not watch a horror movie or any show for that matter where there is blood, (open wounds and limbs and legs off)..

I cut my finger once, just a little, and I had to lie down for an hour after I threw my guts up.

I could almost faint.

I was thinking about going to get hypnotized, does that acutally work??

As a child, I had a fear of fire drills in school. I don't know exactly why. I remember having my first one in first grade, and firefighters came to the school and held one (unannounced). That seemed to trigger it. For the next several school years, I often had an intense fear of going to school and having a drill. "Fire Prevention Week" was in October, and I knew that the chances of a drill greatly increased at that time, so I'd actual try to fake sickness around that time. I'd also watch the weather, figuring they wouldn't hold them on cold or rainy days, so I felt safer on those days.

My parents knew I was faking sick, so they tried to figure out why. I never could admit the real reason, I knew it wouldn't make sense to them, yet I couldn't shake the fear.

When I was a kid I lived on a dirt road and in the spring time, the graders would come around and spread the new gravel on the road, and I wouldnt' walk up the hill to go to the bus because I was terrified of them. I hated the noise.

I think mine would fear is to two fold. one is to be compleatly alone in the dark with no one around me in other words to be abandend. now the second fear does not go at all with the first one. that is to be in the middle of a hudge crowd with no way out. all those people around me just feak me out.

I have a fear of any bug with a stinger... so bees, wasps, hornets... etc. I've never been stung, I have no clue if I'm allergic and have no desire to find out (you only know once you've been stung and I don't ever want to be stung).

Whenever I see a bee/wasp/hornet, I run in fear as far away as possible... preferably to inside a building.

I used to be more afraid of spiders when I was younger. I still don't like them, but now I can at least kill them without being paralized. My rule is, as long as they stay outside I'll leave them alone but the second they come INSIDE they've just signed their death warrent. Because when I find them, they're dead. lol.

I have an irrational fear of open spaces (known as agoraphobia), but I only get this fear when I'm in a place where I'm away from things to grab on. Medication helps a bit but I really need to focus the behavior and cognative changes so I can fully recover.

Only thing that truly gets me very scared is spiders. I can't stand them :(

I don't like killing them though, so I try to put up with them until a mate stops by, then I can usually talk them into capturing them and letting them go outside.

That's no good kimmy :( I don't think they'll do the tonsil/pap smear double whammy but I could be wrong. It's worth talking to your doctor about, he probably has many more embarrassing questions every day. Another option would be to ask for an anti-anxiety medication for a one off usage before the pap smear, tell your doctor you have a big phobia about it. I think it's pretty important for woman to get that sorta thing checked out :(
