Hiya folks,

Does anyone know if there is a difference between Generic Prozac (Fluoxetine) and Name Brand Prozac? Or are they all the same?

I was just wondering because I just started taking Fluoxetine a week ago, and for some reason there's something in my head telling me Name Brand Prozac is far superior (just because of the price)?

But, then again what do I know...I'm the only person I know who takes anti-depressents.

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Thanks again! :)

The chemical composition of the Fluoxetine will be exactly the same for both the brand name and the generic. The differences in the pills will be minor - the fillers and binders that make up the rest of the pill may be slightly different - but these things are inert and should not change the effectiveness of the drug - in fact, generic versions have to pass government tests that prove that absorption of the drug is the same as the name brand! I myself have never noticed any difference between a generic and a name brand drug, other than the difference in price, but some people swear that they can tell the difference. I suspect that in a lot of these situations the difference they feel is psychological - the perception that the more expensive version is better makes a person feel better, even thought the difference in price is due to higher profits and higher marketing expenses for the brand name.
So don't worry about the generic - it will work the same - the only thing you may notice when taking the generic is that your wallet may feel heavier!

Greg

Thanx Greg!!

I think you're right. Just because something's more expensive doesn't make it any better.

Those darn pharmaceutical companies!! :p

i live in sweden, and although there's hardly *anyone*in this country who hasn't heard of "prozac", there's no medication called by that name in sweden!

there are two generic brands called "fluoxetine" and "fontex" respectively.
i've taken both brands, and i didn't notice any difference in them.
