Hi Tara,

thanks for trying to help British ADDers - you don't seem to have got much response - I wonder how many of us are here. I am British, but living in Germany - think there are even fewer non-UK-resident Europeans here - porkkana from Finland is the only other one I've come across. I've tried to find a German forum to get more locale-specific information, but so far haven't found anything nearly as well-organised or as nice as this (though I'm disadvantaged by my mediocre German, even it it's not bad for a foreigner).

Sorry, I'm rambling - really wanted just to say "hi" and thanks for what you've done.

08-26-03, 09:17 AM
Jonathan, there are website translation engines out there (I think Yahoo even has one) that will let you read foreign language web sites.

As a matter of fact, click on this link, ( copy & paste the URL of this (or any web page) into the web page translater, along with the language you wish to read it in, and POOF :)

I think another problem is that, while the United States has generally accepted ADD/ADHD as a "real" issue to contend with, many other countries have not. Socially acceptance will play a big part in folks getting involved and looking to form forums and groups.

Glad you found us here, Jonathan. We would be happy to host a German/European foreign language section for you and anyone else.

Let us know how we can help.

Hi Andrew,

Thanks for this reply - didn't spot it till now. As I said elsewhere, I am English so although I have some interest in translation engines out of pure curiosity, I am happiest with the forums as they are, untranslated!

As you say, though, ADD/ADHD is much more marginal outside North America (get the impression from the forums that Australia may be a bit ahead of Europe in this, though). I had more or less not heard of it (think I may have been aware of it as an American "buzz-word" for hyperactive children, but that was it; certainly had not heard of it as a medical diagnosis) before discovering it as something highly relevant to myself. I suspect there are very few people in Europe who have heard of it without being personally or professional affected/involved.

Thanks for your warm welcome! I'm glad I found you all too.

Hi Jonathan!

I'm American, but am totally obsessed with Germany... hehe... I went there last year for 7 months and now speak Germany pretty well - this summer I'm going back for another 4 months (to work). Of course since I have ADHD, I was SUPER curious about how it's percieved over there and everything - in German ADHD = "ADHS" and ADD = "ADS". (Aufmerksamkeits Defizit/Hyperaktivitaet Syndrom)

And actually... There's a LOT more support in Germany for ADHD than I thought there would be... there was a support group in Augsburg (wehre I was last year) and I wanted to go like the whole time I was there... but never did. (this year I'm going to find one near me in Stuttgart if I can - it was dumb of me not to do it when I had the chance)

If you do a search in Google for ADS or ADHS then you'll find several German websites giving support/advice, etc about ADD - I didn't see anything as awesome as this forum though (which is too bad) There were several lists of national organizations and support groups. When I have some time I'll look them up again and post them.

I didn't really get to explore it as much as I wanted to since I didn't exactly want to reveal to everybody that I had ADD... (especially with cultural differences) but I did tell several of my friends about it, and I got mixed reactions - 3 out of the 4 people I told knew what it was - not from the acronym, but when I spelled out the full name they said things like "oh... that's like, the one with kids... isn't it?" One of my friends/co-workers has all the classic ADD symptoms and so I told him I had it and thought he did too... which was probably a mistake, but that's impulsivity for you - You'd think I had ADD or somthign :)

From my impression, there is a lot of stigma about it since Germans are stereotypically VERY organized... very punctual... plan ahead well... etc etc etc. It had me seriously worried that I wouldn't be able to survive there since it's totally anti-ADD, but I think it actually helped me a lot. Anyway the one guy who I told who DIDN"T know what it was acted completely bizarre about it - we had been freinds that whole time and I hadn't told him until like the last month or so - and when I did, he basically acted really cold and mean about it. I have no idea why that was... I think maybe it was the way I said it or who knows. Anyway this is totally a tangent....

Germans call the stereotypical hyperactive kid a "Zappelphilipp" (fidgity Philipp) - I got called that a lot by my ADD-ish friend. (probably he noticed it a lot more becuase he was the same way... ;)) Anyway I just thought that was interesting.

They do have the same attitude towards psychological/developmental disorders though as other parts of Europe - Germans for example think that we Americans WAYYYYYY overtreat depression. Of course that's a totally unrelated argument. They definately do have the support structure in place - including for adults, but I don't know how different it might be than other countries.

fascinating subject - almost makes me wish I were studying perceptions of psychology across cultures instead of engineering, lol.

03-29-05, 06:40 PM
Whoops!!! I'm really sorry.... I TOTALLY didn't realize this was the UK sub-forum... So I'm posting this stuff under the german one and i'll put up a link.

(gosh you'd think I had ADD or somthin :))

Interesting comments there about germany. My girlfriend is german and quite stereotypically so. Her whole life is regimented and focused, and has completed 5 degrees now and still wanting to study further. She finds it hard to understand my add so im pretty much alone in that respect, but I do find I need her strong will to give me a kick up the *** now and again and keep me from being fuzzy headed

Germany as a place to live I would find impossible, I find it hard enough trying to convince my girlfriend of my add, imagine having to convince a whole community lol
