View Full Version : Add to (Name's) Reputation?

Penultimate
06-16-04, 08:49 PM
There is a scale in the upper right corner of every post. When you move to it it says "Add to (poster's name's) reputation." How will this feature be used? Will it matter?

EDIT: I just noticed that I can add to my own reputation!

Andrew

If I notice a particular post that I was impressed with, I might add to that poster's reputation.

the converse could happen when, in theory, someone's answer isn't accurate.

Who know's? We might scrap the reputation function...We'll have to see.

Yeah, that reputation thing is making me bonkery for some reason....

You also can turn off the ability for anyone to see your reputation in the User CP, I believe.

I clicked on “Add to Big’s reputation” and I was asked to approve or disapprove of the post and to comment. (I did not.) Then just as an experiment, I clicked on “Add to Penultimate’s reputation” on my post. I was not asked to approve or disapprove or comment. It just said that I have 10 reputation points, whatever that means.

Where can I find the reputation on a user’s profile?

Andrew

You can't add to your own reputation by clicking. You do that by adding new posts/threads and by other's adding to your reputation.

You can go to your User Control Panel, and in the options, you can select to block your reputation from showing.

There should be little green dot in the upper right hand corner. put your mouse over it.

that's just mean, I thought you'd just see everywhere I've posted it...lol (and I have YET to understand how to see someone else's number)...remember to vote for me, Andi is Dandy, I need all the points I can get.

Andrew
07-02-04, 07:28 PM
You can't see someone else's number...just the rating "description" associated with the number of reputation points they've accumulated. (i.e. "[username] is on a distinguished road")

I have a question...........when you add to a users reputation are the number of points given to them always the same or is there a way to pick the number of points you give someone?

I noticed that I didn't get the same amount every time someone has given me points but saw no way to pick the number when giving someone else points............how does that work? Is it one point per person that gives you reputation points or 10 or 20 or can you decide how much you give a person? I am a bit confused cause I gave someone points and they only got one point added............and anytime I notice mine have changed it increases by 10 or 20 points............but maybe thats cause some weeks I only get to come here once a week and 10 or 20 people have added to mine maybe? Just wondering how that works.

Andrew
07-08-04, 08:23 AM
Based on the number of positive reputation points you receive, your amount of reputation points you are able to give increases (reputation power). Also, when Administrators give points, it is automatically 10 points.

Today I have decided to start my own commitee...This is a support forum...so let's start by showing ourselves a little support and self respect. :D Therefore, BIG and DAVID you both have 24 hours to post 2 positive thing's about yourselves or I'll be using the reputation button in a negative way for you two boys. Now rack your brains boys you can do it!!!!! :p

David
If my girlfriend had her way mine would say "you are up for sale". heh

Now, that we know what you THINK your significant others would say about you...What do you have to say.

Patiently awaiting your replies,
Cherity

I am currently on vacation. I deserve a vacation <- positive comment.

Admin's can remove negative reputations if the system is abused ;)

Is there a list somewhere of the different reputation levels? Like 0-10 = this, and 11-20 equals that?

What does it all really mean?

Andrew
07-12-04, 09:45 PM
"reputation" and minimum points required*:

User is infamous around these parts -999999
User can only hope to improve -50
User has a little shameless behaviour in the past -10
User is an unknown quantity at this point 0
User is on a distinguished road 10
User will become famous soon enough 50
User has a spectacular aura about 150
User is a jewel in the rough 250
User is just really nice 350
User is a glorious beacon of light 450
User is a name known to all 550
User is a splendid one to behold 650
User has much to be proud of 1000
User has a brilliant future 1500
User has a reputation beyond repute 2000

*Note: Any parties involved in abusing the reputation system will have any or all reputation points taken away from them. This decision will be final and binding.

I ask again... how many times to I have to "spread some reputation around" before I can give it to the same person again?

Andrew

I wasn't aware there was a limit.

Try giving the same person feedback twice and see what happens...

MBahr
07-20-04, 09:58 PM
Thanks Andrew.

Do we start at 0 or 10? And, do we get points by others voting on us, or by number of posts, or...?

Andrew
07-20-04, 10:17 PM
You start off with 10. You will see your "reputation" increase or decrease, based on who votes, how they vote, and how much voting power they have.

The more positive reputation you have, and the more vote for OTHERS, the more voting power you have. Voting power increases the number of points you can give to a person when you vote.

Ya know I first thought it a bad idea; but, I honestly have a lot of fun using a positive reporting system. Not only do I get to make someone feel good but everyone needs a lot of positive reinforcement.

waywardclam
07-21-04, 07:40 AM
Wait until you get some negative reinforcement. See what you think of the system then.

Like I have someone rep long time ago, but I still can't go back and give them any now...even after giving lots of others rep after....and like, if you gave them rep on one of there posts because it was good, you can't give them rep on a different post argorama heh

I'll have to check on that. It may be that someone else has to give that same person a positive (or negative) feedback before you can give that same person positive feedback again.

Again, its possible that this is a built in feature to prevent abuse of the reputation system, but I'll have to check that out.

I want to report that tonight I managed to give three people feedback that I had already done so for... so it IS possible... you just have to spread a lot of it around before you get a chance to do it again.

While we are discussing this, it seems on topic to ask about the little ribbons, medals and compasses some people have appearing on their posts. What are they and why/how do you get them?

Also, the titles after names, like Addministrator and Figment of my Own Imagination, are they self assigned or bestowed?

TIA,
rainraven

Ian
11-06-04, 12:51 AM
I don't know exactly when you get to play with your title or if there are restrictions at all. Check and see if you can change yours in your "user cp" options. My "Super Modified" is changed in there somewhere. There is a default for everyone according to their participation but you can set it yourself too if you want.

The ribbons are awarded by the administrators for appreciation of work done here. I've spent some time coaxing some life into the live chat here and a "chat" ribbon was one day displayed by my name.

The compass means that you are a local guide if I remember correctly. I try and help keep the information about Manitoba current, although I don't do that well I'm acknowledged for trying with the compass.

Moderators and members with more than 2,000 posts can create their own custom titles.

Ribbons are awarded to members by a vote of the Forums Staff, in recognition of their contributions. More on that at: http://www.addforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9690

How come mine says I'm off the scale?

Andrew
12-25-04, 10:39 AM
Members of the ADD Forums can add their vote to your reputation by clicking on the scales in the post that you've created. They're able to vote whether they liked your post or not.

If you click on the scale in your own post, you'll be able to see how many points you have.

I am still learning so many things about what is what on this forum. If it says that I have a certain amount of reputation points(I know you start off with 10), only 2 comments come up under my "control panel", how do I know where the other points came from

Hope that makes sense

I know that SILLY...............my question is:

If a person starts with 10 points................and now that person has 17 points but only 2 are showing up in the reputation part...............how does that person find out about the other 15???

Wheezie
01-11-05, 10:37 PM
minn, here's an explanation of "voting power." in the example you gave, at least one of the two people who added reputation points had more than 1pt. of "voting power."

this is a classic example of 1+1=7 ;)

, post#36 - this thread]You start off with 10. You will see your "reputation" increase or decrease, based on who votes, how they vote, and how much voting power they have.

The more positive reputation you have, and the more vote for OTHERS, the more voting power you have. Voting power increases the number of points you can give to a person when you vote.

I still believe there is a glich in the system. I tried to vote for a member and it said I have to spread it around so I waited marking that very post to vote on later and I spread it around over a period of time I know I voted for at least 9 other posts and do you think it'll let me vote for that person again. Is it really my fault that some members are so good at giving really educated posts? So, now I have three posts by the same person marked and am still spreading cheer amongst the ranks. My work will never be done I tell ya. lol

ok... I'm confused  (not that that's so out of the ordinary, lol!)

is this whole reputation thing something I just missed... (like with an older version of the forums?) or is there really somthing I'm not seeing when I'm looking at people's posts? I don't remember there being any rep stuff last year when i posted alot, and I don't see it now either lol

of course this thread's kinda old i guess so maybe i'm just asking a totally irrelavent question...

Ian
04-01-05, 08:34 PM
It was a feature that came with an upgrade to this software. We tried it out and then disabled it. Not much of a loss from what we could tell from the membership. :D

ok.... that's kind of what I figured :)

yeah it doesn't seem like it would bring much value - almost seems like it would be more than you'd want to get yourself into. Makes sense to disable it! Thanks for the reply Ian!
