While my musical tastes span across the spectrum (Classical to country to jazz to dance to rock) I have been listening to dance music over the past 9 months or so :)

I like old rock, soft rock, some rock..like Pink Floyd. And I love Enya or anything celtic.

I also enjoy nature music mixed with instrumental.

I deal with Heavy Metal, because I feel that Boogie should be allowed to enjoy her type as music as well..although I do sensor some of the cd's she can buy...especially if all they sing about is death and destruction. I'm just happy she doesn't listen to much rap...then I would have to draw the line and tell her to put her head phones on..:p

Anyone here ever listen to Trance music? It can be really calming if BLASTED way up loud. I'm talking #11 on a dial that only goes up to #10! Get It. Loud.

Also, a group called The Crystal Method (TCM), and Fatboy Slim (not at all like what his name suggests, believe me), and Prodigy. These groups' music will move your ADHD soul completely to the left, and back again to the right, but bring it up from behind when doing it to you!

I just love it, and love it loud. And be sure to turn the Bass dial up nicely too. I have a huge subwoofer on my system. Makes dog's howl three streets over!

Andrew

So that was YOU....Harumph. I thought I asked you nicely to turn that down :p

Boogie and Spirit,

I sense some tension regarding the music choices. As a parent, I can appreciate wanting to shield my daughters tender ears from foul language or explicit swearing. However, most bands that use this in their lyrics usually offer the Parental Warning/Censored versions of their songs. It blocks out the bad words. I'm not too familiar with KORN's music, but if the problem is the language, then maybe the censored version will solve it.
Just a suggestion

Gotta let that child rock-n-roll!

Spirit
04-22-03, 07:59 PM
Mark
It's not the language..for we know if she hasn't heard it in music she will hear it from other children, TV or chat.

It's because while she was listening to Korn Untouchables, she became manicky and became obsessive about it. But now we have it all figured out and she has agreed that when I feel she is starting to become obsessive and maniacky I get to take the cd for awhile.

BTW..Boogie is AD/HD, Bipolar, OCD, ODD and has Deep Depression. So I have to keep an eye on her so she doesn't become manic depressive. Her inviroment effects her quite alot.

As for letting her listen to music..I have never really kept her from her choice of music..although I do buy the sensored ones. I just have to watch how much she listens to it..and how she is acting at the time.

Besides I could be a mean parent..lmbo...and force her to listen to polka music..I'm sure my dad will loan me a few cd's. Lmbo :p

Thank you for pointing something out to me that I didnt fully understand. I have seen many members here with depression of different types. I have yet to fully understand that disorder. You have shown my an insight I never realised before, that a persons environment has a profound affect.

My way of looking at music is in a helpful way. It allows me to relax, to forget about anything thats troubling me. If I here even the first few lines to a song that reminds me of something negative, it does bring me down. Possibly the difference between me and someone with depression is that I can choose to turn those feelings off. But the other person isnt as easily able to do that? Am I on the right track with that idea Spirit?

I'm a trance fan as well. I also like house. More these days I've been listening to ambient and acid jazz. My favorite internet station is SomaFM's Groovesalad:

yeah, trance, house, chiil out, and handbag. Its all good. Its all the shiznet!

I really like sampled music too, especially if its done well. There is a local DJ who dubbed Dark Side Of The Moon with an old Donna Summer disco chop, and pulled it off perfectly. I listen to that track over, and over, and over, and over. Puts me into some kind of Yoga-like existentialism.

His name is DJ-XOTEC. Sort of a local icon from the rave scene days of long ago.

Definitely an old skewl mixologist. Its all about the BPM.....

Andrew
04-24-03, 03:16 PM
Yes....its all about BPM. Its how I used to mix "older" dance music of the 90's....had to count the BPS for each song ahead of time.

Heavy Metal - the really fast stuff

speed/melodic/power metal when i'm in a good mood

black/death/horror metal when I'm in a still in a good mood but want to scare everyone else away so I'm alone :)

Everything else these days just seems to slow and the same.
In the "Heavy Metal" genre I mean.

I Love house, jazzz, punk, punk rock, old ska (two-tone and the like)...I like some fast agressive stuff, I love The Clash and a lot of British unknown garage rock...sometimes I need a good dose of the Pogues (Irish folk/punk), Motown/R&B type stuff......FUNK, everything...If it gets me moving, I love it.

Music used to consume more of my time than it does now. This week saw the following in heavy rotation.

Diana Krall - Stepping Out
The Black Crows - By Your Side
Eric Clapton - From The Cradle
J.J. Cale - The Very Best Of
Dixie Chicks - Fly
Tragically Hip - Up to Here

It's been a rocking week for the most part.. ;^)

When I play, I sing mostly John Prine. Not that I'm ever going to be prime time material but it's fun. I also enjoy doing some of Nancy Griffiths stuff.. some Ry Cooder and Eric Clapton. None of it done well.. I play a few blue grass tunes too.

Cheers! Ian.

I have a wide variety of music that I like.

I play the guitar, banjo, mandolin, and piano/keyboard. I'm not a pro at any of them but I'm not bad either. (I read where ADD-ers are often a "Jack-of-All-Trades and Master-of-None." That's me. :D

On the banjo, I like to play bluegrass and folk music. (Songs like "Foggy Mountain Breakdown," "Lonesome Road Blues, " "This Land Is Your Land," and "Cripple Creek." I "bluegrass jam" once a month at the local art center.

On the guitar, I enjoy playing John Denver (My Sweet Lady); Jim Croce (Time In a Bottle); Kansas (Dust in the Wind); Peter, Paul & Mary (Puff the Magic Dragon, Blowin' In the Wind); Simon & Garfunkel (Bookends, Bridge Over Troubled Water).

On the piano, my favorite song to play is "Yesterday," by the Beatles.

I also enjoy playing Christian contemporary music on the piano and the guitar. (Songs like "As the Deer Panteth For the Water," "Awesome God," and "If I Stand." I loved Rich Mullins music. Was so sorry when he died a few years back).

I love to play old hymns (like "Joyful Joyful We Adore Thee," "Holy Holy Holy" and Christmas Carols/Hymns on the piano and/or organ too). I've played some music in church but not much lately. I sing in church too-- (not solo, though).

I am very passionate about music. For me, it's the blues. I consider it one of the primary building blocks of all modern music. There's a famous expression, "The blues had a baby and they named it rock and roll.

A major misconception is that blues is depressing music. It is anything but. I find it completely uplifting and inspiring. Another misconception is that blues is static music that all sounds the same. The more you dig into it, the more variety you find. It's much more than B.B. King and Stevie Ray Vaughan, though both of these musicians deserve all the respect they get.

If any of you have ever been curious about the blues, check it out. Buy a blues compilation CD set, or pick up something by Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Albert Collins, Jimmy Vaughan, Bonnie Raitt, Colin James, or the Downchild Blues Band. Chances are you will be hooked.

I really enjoy soft Jazz, it's so relaxing & it helps me to concentrate whenever i'm working on something.

But i'll listen to just about anything if it sounds good, from rock to r&b. Rap is complete garbage if you ask me, you can barely understand what those people are saying lol. & they always rap about money, girls, & drugs...it's really sad. I like to at least hear what the person is saying...not "wtrgfdgijwregj" the whole time :D j/k. I don't think it's that bad, but it's not far from it.

I responded "other" because how can I choose? The only one I don't care for is Country. I like music you can feel in your belly or chest. I can only hear country in my ears. BTW, supernova, the lyrics in rap are secondary IMHO. Try listening with your belly. You probably get it because you like jazz.

suupanova
12-03-03, 01:12 AM
well, some rap songs are ok...those that actually have a message behind them. I'll listen to those anytime. Maybe your right FlakeyGirl, I should try listening to it more often & maybe i'll get into it more.

But their so outnumbered by those songs that i just can't stand. It's all about "who can flow the fastest", "who can come up with the best rhyme", "who can have the prettiest/most girls in a video", etc. It shouldn't be about that.

I'll say this about rap, out of all the music out there it's probably the most difficult music to make since your almost always struggling to find new lyrics, new rhymes, all while trying to keep yourself "well known". Popularity in rap stars can increase/decrease probably faster than any other music artist out there. Since there are so many guys/girls trying to make a name for themselves in the buisness.

Country music...haven't heard enough of it to make a final decision. & some christian music is actually pretty good too, IMO

Quick recommendation, suupa or anybody who likes to hear new good music...give a listen to Outkast, I think the song is called "I like the way you move." It doesn't have that competitive element you mentioned. It has a bit of a "jazzy" feel to it. Also, it is not too suggestive.

My favorite types of music are bebop (love In N' Out!), electronic-types (not into the house stuff though, more like NIN and Stereolab and Mouse On Mars), lots of the '60's greats like Joplin and Jefferson Airplane and Hendrix, and some Seattle/grunge rock if it can be classified as such (love Temple of the Dog, Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, and the Meat Puppets). I also love The Strokes.. what are they? The only straight forward punk that I like is Melt Bannana. I also love the B-52's; ...please aim the rotting cabbages and tomatoes elsewhere! Raised on Simon and Garfunkle, Rickie Lee Jones, Queen, Handel, Morzart, Zappa, Led Zepelin. My favoite composer is Chopin. And I also absolutely adore traditional Japanese court music- that will completely zone you out! And Indian, Arabic, and Native-American drumming. But I always have trouble remembering all the kinds of music, and groups/individuals, that I like. Too many for my memory.

.. so I had to choose 'other'!

Too much music to name!

All time favorites forever:
Pet Shop Boys
Pink Floyd
Fleetwood Mac
Jimmy Buffett

Also love trance, electronica, dance. BT mixes it up pretty well, as does Moby. Enigma has a great electronic sort of sound.

Britney Spears, whom I will dub a guilty pleasure, because I don't know anybody else who likes her.

Recent Most Played Songs:
Tori Amos- Cornflake Girl
Guster- Amsterdam, Careful
Sarah McLachlan- Fallen
Liz Phair- Extraordinary

This is just a sample...

For those that say they love me, know that music is a main staple of my life...I couldn't live without it. Currently I've downloaded in about I'd say a month in a half over a 1000 songs and within the past week, 25 of them are albums I need to burn. I've got Frank and Dean, Harry Connick, jr. Aretha, Tina, Barbara, Cher, Barry White, Pretenders, Puddle of Mudd, Gordon Lightfoot, Carly Simon...the list goes on and on...what can I say...I love it.

I love music, from a drum solo and up.
My tasts change with the seasons as well.

Classical music is great for cold winters days.
rock and roll is just unbeatable with the sunroof and windows open in the middle of the summer.

My favourite songs ever would have to be.

"My Girl", the band escapes me as usual
"walking on sunshine" Katrina and the Waves
"Addicted to love" and again the band escapes me.

"If music be the food of love, play on"

Hi Capri ! " Addicted to love" was a Robert Palmer tune Unfortunately he passed away this past fall so there won't be any more like it...
Anyone else here like zydeco music? You just can't stay sad or mad when you listen to it! (Rent the Bib Easy and see what I mean) I am a big fan of Doug & the Slugs! What's not to love about them?!!
