View Full Version : Eating when tired:
NightStar 06-27-04, 05:05 PM I was not sure where to put this, but it is a problem of mine, when ever I feel tired that I eat more to stay awake. Or eating just as soon as I wake up from a nap?
It seems like I am eating more then I need to, during the week I don't take naps - but over the weekend it is more pulling to take naps and that is when I eat the most.
What specifically do you eat when you're tired? My guess would be foods rich in carbohydrates.
the body burns those foods faster for energy.
NightStar 06-27-04, 05:21 PM That is about ALL I even eat, like today I just had several crackers and peanut butter and some with cheese spread.
I ended up taking a nap - when I didn't want to today. Just wiped out after having lunch which was ham sandwhich and plain lettice on the side.
Still feel tired now, that is why I had the snack.
FlakeyGirl 06-27-04, 05:45 PM Have you been screened for diabetes or hypoglycemia?
NightStar 06-27-04, 06:17 PM No, I am having issues with my doctor right now, I asked them back the 1st of this year to test me, but they never bothered.
My sister is Diebetic and tested me when she come up for visit, she said she thought I was boarderline.
FlakeyGirl 06-27-04, 06:47 PM Hmmm, if your sister is diabetic, all the more reason to push for the test, because diabetes has something like 35% incidence among siblings. As for having issues with your provider, diabetes is nothing to mess around with. They should be on top of it as it is a relatively simple and cheap test.
I am assuming your sister gave you the finger stick. Although it is fun  and intersting, it is not really a reliable indicator of the disease.
Your doc will probably order a glucose tolerance, one or three hours. If you have had a pregnancy, you know about this one. If not, you do a 12 hour fast, then consume something extremely high in glucose. This is usually in the form of a syrupy sweet beverage, like cola or orange drink without any carbonation or much water added. They then test your blood glucose level at one, two and three hours to see if you are metabolizing sugar at an acceptable rate. Bring something to do if you take this test because they want you to stay there, and not be running all over town. As I understand it, a resting metabolism is necessary for accurate results. I almost went bananas during my 3 hour test. The receptionist kept soap operas on the television the entire time.
There are only 2 reasons I can imagine why your doctor wouldn't have ordered a test for you. If you have any kind of HMO managed care and you do come up positive for diabetes, it is expensive for the insurance company to treat, as diabetes is a chronic illness. They do not reward doctors who discover new chronic illness in their patients. The other reason might be that you have not complained LOUDLY enough. I'm not saying you are at fault at all. I just mean that if you casually mentioned your concern in passing, the doc may not have understood that you'd like to have tests run.
Check this site and if you see anything suspect, contact your doctor again with your specfic concerns.

NightStar 06-27-04, 07:44 PM I have had this same doctor 15 years, he originally diagnosed me with Bi-Polar w/ high aggitation - but never distinguished what level, and never caught the ADD I know that I have issues with now.
I don't have any medical insurance, never had, so I only go to the doctor every few years - last time he was not happy with me because of my difference on child birth, I know this is a sore subject, but I personally don't want kids and he refused to tie my tubes so we now have issues. And his office has been less then friendly in service every since.
I usually try to go for several things at once, so that when they do run up tests and such, it takes me months / years of playing catch up with the local hospital on payment plans, but that has never stopped me from having his office paid off with in a month or two in the past.
Well he won't allow me to do that any more, and they pick what to address, and have been purposely stalling me. Last Feb when I asked for meds for my BP they kept putting me on something that was going to cost more then $500 per month, when I kept going back (which was 3 or 4 times @ $45 per visit) they just kept readjusting the same med I told them "I could not afford". She finally got mad and told me to go to the health department! We make too much money though.
I have been trying to find a new doctor, that can cover multiple issues for me. New patient fee, transfer of records and such is part of the reason I have not moved on yet. I am still paying off a $4,000 medical bill that we had this year for the first time... so it threw me out of the loop for a while being able to afford any service.
I am a bit scared of the diebetic issue, just can't grasp what it is about. I hate the idea of not being able to eat what I do now, it is such a small amount of foods I do eat. I was just going to try and start a new diet within the foods I am eathing now.
fasttalkingmom 06-27-04, 08:21 PM Oh ya I know something about this myself ( the eating). I told my med. doctor about this and he said it's something many ADDers do to keep alert and fight off sleepness specially if bored. He told me it's kinda like self medicating with food. Made me feel some what better
NightStar 06-27-04, 08:33 PM That is exactly how I feel, that I don't want to go to sleep until I am ready, so I distract myself with eating - it don't have to be anything major, a lot of times I use to eat noodles raw, or popcorn.. just something to keep eating..
NightStar 09-08-04, 12:59 AM Well I am back to eating big time, think I have gained 5 pounds or more in the last month, I have not succeeded in putting off sleep though. I am sleeping more then I had before, but think I am entering new stage of depression affecting me.
Wow, I didn't even know I was self-medicating that way. :P I've found in the past that I could substitute food for sleep pretty effectively. In other words, I'm usually OK if I only sleep 2-4 hours but eat a decent breakfast in addition to what I normally eat, as long as I'm already not too sleep deprived. I still have to "pay the piper" eventually and catch up on sleep, but I usually would do that on weekends.
Also, if I sleep a lot, I don't tend to eat as much.
I haven't really noticed these tendency so much recently, as in after I've started ADD medication, so who knows? :) I do know that before meds, I could drink WAY too much caffeine and go straight to bed. Now it actually keeps me up at night. Woohoo.
NightStar 09-08-04, 02:07 AM It is now going on 1am, and I know it is because I slept about 4 hours this afternoon, but I definitely don't want to get my nights and days turned around, nor do I want to not get enough sleep - because I suffer from sleep paralysis when sleep depervated.
Plus my bi-polar gets worse with the mood swings, so over sleeping is fine, but I do get worried on the flip side of not sleeping enough.
ADDitives 03-06-05, 08:34 AM i know i'm repeating myself, but it applies to this thread too, and if i say it in more places i might get some sort of a response... (not that i came in this thread to talk about this, but the subject seems open to this anyway..)
over the last month or so, ive been noticing that after having softdrinks, such as coke, i get extremely tired when i've had the drink.
the same thing seems to be happening when i have "silly" foods, for instance in wednesday i ate caramel slice, and on friday i ate a pink iced donut. in both instances, i was hyperactive (more than usu) for about half an hour, then i was completely tired.
auntchris 03-27-05, 12:03 AM Nightstar ..... About the peanut butter for some reason it makes me tired. I love the stuff and milk too . I think it has to do with the enzyme you know the same one in turkey. I nurse told me this when I was in the hospital.
I also have been sleeping alot more and getting headaches. I have been dealing with my depression and the a new issue. Can seem to sleep at right time of day.
NightStar 03-27-05, 02:39 AM I have become more tired then this post, I am on new medications Zoloft and Abilify, and I know some food are causing this, not noticed so much with the pop, but more with pasta type foods, I am feeling in a fog most of the day. Can't focuse on long term tasks, just to distracted. Want to take naps all the time.

Just found this, might think of adding some more supplements to my diet to include Iron, and try to avoid the bread, and drink more tea instead of pop.
