Pic I took with my BlackBerry. Under the shirt is the jeans I got on clearance for $11, regularly $55.

Nope. Kohl's. I got my Pac-Man shirt at Target though that I absolutely love. Have to go back for the Dig Dug shirt though sometime soon.

Random fact : I bought my wife's favorite shirt from Target and told her it was mine when I really intended it to be for her. This way she would feel better about stealing my shirts and she could have one of "my" shirts all to herself. :p

I think I'm about to my breaking point of starting to do a bunch of things along these lines (i.g., confrontation with supervisor, confrontation with professor etc... not necessarily "negative" confrontation, but it'll be uncomfortable for me). Totally out of character for me, but I'm getting close to my limit. Too many things need to desperately be changed, and I'm about to the point that I'm just going to look out for me.

We are excellent agents of change aren't we? I wonder chemical guy, if the world is willing to accept this.

sometimes i'm an insensitive *******, as i'm sure is no big secret:rolleyes:; sometimes i want to help another by lightening his/her load and am i'm quite literally able to do so. there have also been occasions when a person i love is burdened by so much...suffers so much that's clearly impossible for one person to shoulder alone. i wish that we could divvy it up, at least divide it in half, but if that's out of the question then i'd give anything to just trade places. that's the best description of what powerlessness, impotence, feels like to me, because the circumstances never permit the switch.

it's bull**** that we even have the word (much less entertain as possible this conceptual ideal to fruitlessly strive toward) "fair".

That's a crazy long refractory period.

In fact, according to wiki, that's longer than the average 70 year old man:
According to some studies, 18-year-old males have a refractory period of about 15 minutes, while those in their 70s take about 20 hours, with the average for all men being about a half-hour.

How old are you really metz? You really type fast compared to everyone else near your age. I'm impressed.

Chem guy, that shirt was JUST THAT EPIC. You don't understand, I had that picture as my background for years and was looking for that pic on a shirt for over a year. The only one I found was in girls sizes so that was a no go, so when I found this it was like King Arthur finding the Holy Grail. The only thing that can out do this is if I have a child.

I am 37. When I first got online back in 96 I was an IRC nerd and was op in many channels. So I would have to juggle DCC Chats and channel chat in order to keep things going. Back in the day also that's where I met a lot of my girlfriends and even where I eventually met my wife. Last time I was timed was 2000ish and I was at 65 WPM and could do over 11K 10-key strokes per hour. I am a lot slower now but that's where I was at, I know people faster and people slower. *shrug*

Oh yeah, I'm so old I learned how to type on a typewriter in HS. In that class I caught a mouse running across a typewriter with my hands (didn't know better at the time) and dropped him outside the window (we were on the 1st floor so he just landed in some grass).

I typed on a typewriter before I typed on a computer. I also remember when my school got its first "computer lab" for my age group, and I remember my 6th grade teacher being insanely proud and happy that she had an actual computer in her classroom. All of this happened around the Oregon Trail days, Math Blaster, and a few others. My very first computer I had at home (for the family) ran DOS... and then we got a new "fancy" computer a little while after that that did have windows 95.

I don't actually remember the first time I went online, but I do remember my parents were freaked out, and I had to convince them to sign several forms for my school so that I could even use the mysterious "world wide web".

I still remember dialing into something too that had no real graphics or anything, it was a text based turn based game. I wish I could remember what it was. I remember things that happened in the game and everything too... It was some planet acquisition/resource acquisition, attack/defend your resources and try to get others through spying and attacking other people's planets. You got like 5 turns per day, and you could even message other people. It was pretty fun for me at the time.

Quite a bit younger than you, but my students definitely make me feel old. In fact, the last class period, we talked about movies they could remember seeing from their childhood. It was a little painful.

You mean like a BBS? I remember doing that, I also remember when I discovered "slip calling" so I could use the internet in Windows 3.1. Oh man, those were the days, having to type in ATDT(phone#) over and over until I got a connection. Simpler times they were back then.

Also my first computer lab had nothing but Apple IIc and the only thing you could really do is Apple Works I think it was called, a primitive MS Office back then. Monitors also were monochrome in that odd orangey color. I still remember having my entire baseball card collection on a spreadsheet back then, what a waste of time. :p

The C64 was the best ever! Me and my buddies would trade games whenever we could and each and everyone had a friend or a friend of a friend that had games we've never seen before. Years ago I found a good emulator for games just so I could play Micro League Baseball again and it mimicked the C64 too well, it took a year and a day to load up anything. :p

That sounds exactly like what it was. I remember having to type in phone numbers over and over too.

We also had exclusively apple somethings in there. We did have some monitors that were the whole black background/green text variations. One of the lab teachers actually had one that had burned an image into the screen to illustrate "why it is important for us to use screen savers".

But yeah, I don't remember a ton about all of that, I was still relatively young.

For some reason, when it pertains to school/being more productive, I don't care at all. Random Fact: I set lots of goals, and never really complete any of them.

βĩο₱Ħعℓĩᶏ
04-25-11, 09:20 PM
I've begun to appreciate thinking about goals as things that don't have a clear measure or completion (e.g. be an effective communicator) and thinking about objectives as milestones towards reaching a goal that do have a clear measure or can be completed (e.g. improve writing skills) and tasks as the steps to complete objectives (e.g. read "How to Speak and Write Correctly" and write for 20 minutes a day on one pre-selected topic).

My goal oriented behavior is very bad,
I hope objective orientation will help...

I've been practicing telling myself "time waster!" when I find myself wanting to wander off or find myself getting sucked into something that won't produce results I want/need. I'm floored how many little things I do that waste time, and how much time there actually is to actually do things (like more than 3 things in a day without being exhausted). It's weird finding ways to fill up the time... very strange.

I wrote a line on my whiteboard that's across the room but in eyesight from where I look at my monitors. It says "How is what you are doing right now preparing you for your success tomorrow?" I see it, and then feel bad. It might sound lame, but when I realize how much time I'm not actually using to prepare me for tomorrow, it sinks in some.

I've been willing to do laundry for the past few days, but my laundry machine has been acting funny. I'd start a 40 minute wash cycle and approximately 20 minutes later it would stop and indicate an error. I thought it might have been a connection problem with the rubber water pipes, so I moved them around a bit but it didn't really work. I gave up trying to diagnose the problem so I just unplugged it for hours.

I eventually plugged it back in and it started working. So...now I'm trying to catch up on laundry...

oh no...

I hear that annoying beep sound from the laundry machine, again. Why??

That's unfortunate. I don't need any help/excuses to not do laundry or any other household chore for that matter lol. I'd hear the beeping and just think it was the washer's way of telling me I'm finished for the day/week.

Is there some kind of drainage problem or something?

It's not anything to be overly proud of, but I have so much stress building up, I haven't been sleeping etc. So over the last 3 days, playing a stupid PS3 Move game, I've done the equivalent calorie-wise of running 11 miles in about 2.5 hours of total playing time. He is part miniature poodle (like a circus poodle), pekinese, collie, chihuahua, and miniature italian greyhound.

He came from St. Croix, There are more dogs than people there so a program has started to ship them into Animal Shelters in the US. Traveller's can pay for a dog's flight to the US through this program. My sister found him at the animal shelter in Charlotte.

He's smart, quirky, awkward, funny, emotional, tuned in, and very cuddly

I wouldn't mind having a pet turtle myself. Especially a baby turtle. :D:D They seem like low-maintenance pets, from what I've read about them. :)

I also want a rat. :p

I want a tarantula but the wife has already nixed that idea a couple times. Something about living where they live and not knowing which is devenomized and which isn't. Whatever, said the same thing about getting a Boa Constrictor, like they're going to be roaming loose in the middle of Wisconsin.

Rats I would say no to, if you have a chance watch the Animal Hoarding episode where a guy got a couple rats, they got out one day and he ended up with over 2000 of them. Ate up everything.

Turtles are so cool plus I'd love the chance to go around and say "I love turtles" to people at random. Just to whip out my wallet like people do with baby pictures just to show them a turtle.

I've had aquatic frogs before, those were cool. It was up in Wisconsin so my greatest fun was waiting for a rain storm then going out to collect night crawlers. Throw those into the tank, watch them (Drew and Kate) suck up the worms and jam them back in with their front flippers. Really really cool stuff.

Rats are actually awesome pets!

RF: When I was between the ages of 12-14 I owned 4 cats, 2 dogs, 1 bird, and 7 rats.... Oh, and a dozen gold fish.... I had a basement bedroom and my window let out right to the dog run so, if I ever couldnt sleep I would take my sleeping bag and crawl out my window and sleep with the dogs.

Yes, my parents were insane to allow all those pets but, they were my best friends.... I was such a weird child!!!!

Rats, ick. Then again you had a bird also and I'm not a bird person either. I guess to each their own. :p

You could've hung with the goldfish so when asked where you were could've said "I'm sleeping with the fishes" in a nice mafia/Jersey accent.

Domesticated rats are actually more friendly than hamsters and rabbits I hear. :) Ironically, people are more likely to allow their children to play with hamsters (which can be mean and nasty at times) than rats (who are gentle and more sociable and easy to train to do cute things like ride on your shoulder.) All because of looks. :p It's no fair I tell ya, hehe.

It's funny, mine is long gone but I had one for a while. Thanks to stuttering therapy and the fact that I've slowed down my speech a lot it took my accent with it. Now I sound more like a midwesterner, which is a good thing I thinks. :)

Mine too. I really need to get my vision checked. It's been like 3 years lol. I took my glasses off in class the other day and realized I couldn't read anything on the board at all... and I sit in the 2nd row. We saw the King's Speech last night (borrowed the DVD from someone). I had read the script online after the Oscars, but the script which I read was not the shooting script. I was a little disappointed that they had cut a few scenes I'd wanted to see.

I virtually view movies. I read the script, get the IMDB synopsis, look at the movie stills, read the quotes, etc. If I still want to see it after that, then we try to see it when we're in the UK or US.

There are also movies I deliberately did not want to see, but wanted to "virtually view" in that way, like The Butterflly Effect, Fight Club, and Blade Runner. I didn't want the images burned in my memory, but I wanted to know what happened.

So, the day has had a little hiccup for me. My tutoring session was canceled, because I missed too many appointments (I think 3). You get locked out for the semester when this happens.

I persuaded the guy to let me back in, and I don't even know why I did it. I'm very persuasive, but I think I did it because I was being defensive. It's one of those unfair things that you gotta deal with in life.

One thing that goes wrong, can throw off my equilibrium.

Great series. I have the first edition Complete Hitchhiker Bible, which to my amusement, people often believe is an actual bible when I carry/read it. The Restaurant at the End of the Universe is my favorite out of those books.

I particularly love Adams's views on politicians and bureaucrats. :D

Metz, don't watch the movie until you've finished Restaurant. It takes mostly from the first book, but also a little from the second. There is also an 80's BBC miniseries that has a much smaller budget than the film, but captures the books a lot better than the newer, snazzyer movie does. The movie is well casted though, and still a lot of fun.

You can start any where you want. I like the Sam Vimes books the best, which start with Gaurds Guards. The best one, IMHO though, is Nightwatch.

Discworld is one of those series where there is no over all plot, even the series that are about the same character. So you can start anywhere and you should have no problem understanding everything that's going on in that book. The plot of each book ends with the last page and doesn't carry over much at all to the next book other than possibly a mention of a previous event or character.

Sorry if my explanation is really bad. My braid is fried from studying.

Random Fact: I feel bad for John Hus. Almost all the pictures drawn or painted of him are depictions of him being burned for heresy. For some reason that made me feel really bad for him. I think I'm going to draw a picture of him reading or something, just one will exist that isn't dedicated to him being killed.
