There has been deaths associated with the vaccine. Also life changing permanent illness.
It may not last, so if my daughter got the vaccine at 16 by the time she's 21 it may have no effect.
It's a personal choice I'm making and I just like to inform people to do the research before they get the vaccine for themselves or their child.
And it doesn't cover every strain of the virus.

Ok ok. First of all, I did not know how common HPV is. I've heard from several sources that it is. However, it was scary as h*** for someone to report that on the very first date when made me consider if I could contract this thing.

Random fact: I don't know how ArtGypsy would know that I may have been exposed to it! I've never had sexual contact in my life.:p

LOL. Most people don't. Which is why I share the info when someone brings it up. Especially moms of pre-teen/teen girls who'd doctors are trying to get them to get the Gardasil Vaccine.

I bet it would - nice of her to tell you though....lol. That probably would have been something to save for a second date. Or maybe not. :p

Oohhhhh ok....well then...umm....guess your good to go! :D

Just to put things into perspective... based on the cdc:

You run a risk of 0.056% to have some reaction to it. Reactions included in that tally of 0.056% risk are "fainting, pain, and swelling at the injection site (the arm), headache, nausea, and fever."

I'd imagine fainting and pain would be side effects with pretty much all vaccines.

The risk of having more than the above (having a "serious event") falls into the 0.0044% category, or 1 in ~22,700.

Driving a car in the US ~10,000 miles a year carries a risk of *death* at 1 in ~5,000-6,000.

The cdc site also makes the note "As with all VAERS reports, serious events may or may not have been caused by the vaccine."

So of 1 in 22,700 who had a serious event, you can't determine if the vaccine were even the cause or not.

It's also even noted As of February 14, 2011, there have been 61 VAERS reports of death among females who have received Gardasil. Thirty two of these reports have been confirmed and 29 remain unconfirmed due to no identifiable patient information in the report such as a name and contact information to confirm the report. A death report is confirmed (verified) after a medical doctor reviews the report and any associated records. In the 32 reports confirmed, there was no unusual pattern or clustering to the deaths that would suggest that they were caused by the vaccine and some reports indicated a cause of death unrelated to vaccination.

And

A major limitation of VAERS data is that there is no proven causal association between the vaccine and the adverse event. The only association is in time, meaning that the adverse event occurred sometime after vaccination. Therefore, we cannot conclude that the events reported to VAERS were caused by the vaccine.

It doesn't cover every strain, but it takes care of the primary ones that cause cervical cancer. Trying to lower the rate of cervical cancer is, from what I've been able to understand, the primary driving force behind getting this vaccine.

So if you are truly concerned about education of the risks of this vaccine as you indicated here: Reason I know all this is because of the new Gardasil vaccine. They want to give it to girls in their teenage years to prevent HPV. But it is not guaranteed to do so since there are so many strains. It is a risky vaccine that can do more damage than good. And knowing that your body can fight HPV itself, why take the chances of making your kid sick. (but that is all my opinion)

make sure you know more than just the stuff you hear from news sources. I find it a little concerning when you cite all the sources (which some are a few years old), and at least one of those sources clearly shows that the risk is at a minimum. You've said things like "it doesn't fight against all the strains of HPV. HPV is really common. Why do this when it's like other common infections we live with?" But you are missing the point that this fights against some of the HIGH-RISK strains of HPV. Even wiki has the info in the first few sentences Both vaccines protect against the two HPV types (HPV-16 and HPV-18) that cause 70% of cervical cancers, and cause some other genital cancers; Gardasil also protects against the two HPV types (HPV-6 and HPV-11) that cause 90% of genital warts. So it's not just about "not getting HPV".

I agree that it's a personal choice, but explaining everything involved and understanding both sides of the debate is crucial in making an informed decision.

And one last note about the Guillain-Barré syndrome

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) has been reported after vaccination with Gardasil. GBS is a rare neurologic disorder that causes muscle weakness. It occurs in 1-2 out of every 100,000 people in their teens. A number of infections have been associated with GBS. There has been no indication that Gardasil increases the rate of GBS in girls and women above the rate expected in the general population, whether or not they were vaccinated.

Some of these things could very likely just have occurred at the same rate of the general population without having any actual causation relation to the vaccine. It'd be like getting the flu after changing the flavor of gum I had been chewing for the last 5 years. Perhaps the gum is at fault, but perhaps that was just in the timing of things.

I've never been claustrophobic until recently. Probably actually not true claustrophobia but if my kids crowd around me too close, or even sit too close for too long, it drives me nuts. Same with my husband. Interesting now that I think about it. It sounds like I might need to talk to a doctor about it.

Random Fact: I get carried away sometimes. Lol.

I am (was at the time also) on my laptop and don't have the links I have on my PC, so those were a quick go to.

The vaccine is too new and I have heard a lot of negative about it. A military wife friend - her daughter got VERY sick from it and she was out of school for almost 6 months because of it. Maybe there was something pre-existing in her daughter that caused a reaction. But that's something you don't know until it's too late.

I have done the research and weighed the pro's and con's for US and it's too risky, it's not a guarantee against HPV or the HPV that can cause cancer and not all cervical cancers (and such) are caused by HPV. Education and detection is a better choice for US.

Like I said - I just suggest people research it before just shooting something into their body because their doctor suggests to.

We also don't (my kids and I, my husband HAS too) - get the flu vaccine. It's also not a guarantee and it's my personal choice to do preventative maintenance with supplements instead. And knock on wood, there has been no flu to go through my house in years and when it did, it was very mild.

2 years ago my neighbor, who had been getting the flu shot regularly because she worked in a doctors office, died at 33 because of complications due to the flu. Now she didn't die as a result of the vaccine, but just because you get one doesn't mean it will help you.

(sorry I get carried away too sometimes, different message board discussion....lol. I don't have my resources available to back myself up right now and I hate typing on my laptop ;) )

I merely based my claims on documented information from the CDC. I have heard many things many times where something has been blown way out of proportion. This is why maintaining a good perspective on a what's happening with the large population is important imo.

I have done the research and weighed the pro's and con's for US and it's too risky, it's not a guarantee against HPV or the HPV that can cause cancer and not all cervical cancers (and such) are caused by HPV. Education and detection is a better choice for US.

Right. There are many things that aren't guaranteed as well, but it's generally better to avoid or do for preventative measures. Like smoking. It's not a guarantee that you'll get cancer, or other smoking related diseases, but by not smoking, you very much decrease your chances.

Like I said - I just suggest people research it before just shooting something into their body because their doctor suggests to.

Yes, I very much agree. However, I also know that many doctors have way more understanding than I do about something. If I'm leery about something I'd personally default to another professional opinion. If a majority of people in the field recommended something to me, but many people who have less understanding of the topic advise otherwise, I'd make sure that I was making the best decision for me based on as much verifiable information as possible.

We also don't (my kids and I, my husband HAS too) - get the flu vaccine. It's also not a guarantee and it's my personal choice to do preventative maintenance with supplements instead. And knock on wood, there has been no flu to go through my house in years and when it did, it was very mild.

I don't get the flu vaccine either. I really don't have much of an opinion on it actually, so maybe it's out of indifference. I did get sick this year though.

(sorry I get carried away too sometimes, different message board discussion....lol. I don't have my resources available to back myself up right now and I hate typing on my laptop ;) )

No worries. I don't have to have any other resources. I was just saying, things like CNN or NBC News or anything like that are fine, but some of those articles were from a few years ago. It leads to the possibility of making a warning type of post about mad cow disease several years after the fact. Not saying it's not something to be concerned about, but usually when there is an initial threat of something, there is a big "scare" period, and then people start realizing that it really isn't as bad as it seems. So when you go back to articles that are a few years old on news sites, you run that risk. Usually too, news sites are fantastic at getting pressing news out to a massive number of people. But where they start to show their weak side, is getting into the deep details about what's going on. Then you have the whole bias situations to make sure you at least acknowledge as well if you want to make the most informed decision possible.

It's all good, I just think it's important to dig into the facts that are causing things to be said, and make sure you get to the bottom of the facts, and not just let certain statements that are misleading influence your final decision.

As long as that is the case, I respect your decision completely. It's the uninformed, or even misinformed decisions that I don't like, which is why I felt compelled to respond to your initial post...just so that everyone who read that would make note of both sides.

One last interesting note, from wiki: The research that led to the development of the vaccine began in the 1980s by groups at the University of Rochester, Georgetown University, and the US National Cancer Institute (NCI). In 1991, Australian investigators at The University of Queensland found a way to form non-infectious virus-like particles (VLP), which could also strongly activate the immune system. However, these VLPs assembled poorly and did not have the same structure as infectious HPV. In 1993, a laboratory at the US National Cancer Institute was able to generate HPV16 VLPs that were morphologically correct. These VLPs were the basis for the HPV16 component of the Gardasil vaccine.[14] Upon commercialization of the vaccine, controversy involving intellectual property arose between the various groups that played a role in developing the vaccine.

I just wanted to throw that out there, mainly because of the discussions that have been going on in another thread. The Gardasil vaccine's history started back in the '80's and the Gardasil vaccine just reached the market recently. Drug research is such a long process.

The kids were upstairs going to bed so I settled down to watch some Sopranos. Only one or two minutes into it, my mother-in-law hollered something so I paused the VCR and walked to the stairs to have her repeat it. She said my 5 year old was coming downstairs to get a book. By then he was already in the living room by his books being quiet. I realized what was on the paused screen so I shut off the tv and asked if he seen anything. "Yeah" "What did you see?" "Boooobs" (except when he says it, it sounds like booze.) I'm surprised he didn't point that out when he first saw them. Wasn't anything major; a couple ladies in g-strings and they weren't doing anything. But my babies are growing up! Gotta really watch it now!

There's 2 colleges I can choose (well, multiple, but within a reasonable distance...) and I'm not sure which one I want to take my core classes at. The one that's 20 minutes from me is honestly not that great of a school, and I'm concerned about actually learning something and not just getting a degree.

A lot of stuff to think about. I've been meaning to head over to the College forum to get some opinions...

I started reading the Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin. My first commandment is "Always write with a purple pen". Don't know why that came to mind but I'm gonna start writing with a purple pen. Except for stuff that requires blue or black of course (party-poopers). My favorite colors are pink and purple. For some reason some stuff I want in pink (my laptop, phone case, portable DVD player. I guess electronics are pink) and other stuff I like purple (some shirts, ink). But then I'd like to color my hair (a no-no when looking for a job!) and I'd like either pink (like my RockBand character. She's cool...) or blue. Why not purple? Don't know. Why blue? Don't know.

When you say "around here" do you mean around addforums.com, or around where you live?

I'd kind of gotten the idea that I more or less fit in here and there on the forum. (Which I appreciate. :)) I just meant in the general area where I live.

I have friends who I can count on to be here if I need them, but, you know... There are still those reactions if I share things that are not quite the norm. (And I definitely don't tell people about my having ADD and BP II. Not after the reactions from a couple friends I told in the psych field.) People around me don't look at things the way I do, don't want to flip things over and look at them from the other side, figuratively speaking. Some say, "Huh, that's interesting," and change the topic. Others suddenly find they have something they forgot to do, and need to scurry off to get it done. One friend of mine gets really irritated when I discuss things are outside the boundaries she has set for herself (and everyone else). So, yeah, I just don't quite fit in. That's not new, of course. Anywhere I've lived it has been the same.

Please note, this isn't a pity party, just an observation.

I'm doing part of my internship at an inpatient psych hospital. Last Monday a lot of people had been discharged, and things were really quiet. On Friday it was packed, with the staff having to hustle to catch up on everything after being slammed with admissions. One of the social workers said it was because of this moon phenomenon. :D

Don't know. Why blue? Don't know.

I went to post earlier and never hit "submit" and then, after I submitted, I noticed your post. What a cowinkydink. Haha. :p

Yeah, I have dark strawberry blonde hair naturally, but I still bleached the heck out of it (well, the parts I wanted to dye). I got the color in now. Rule of the Bone, Russell Banks
Henderson the Rain King, Saul Bellow
Sometimes a Great Notion, Ken Kesey
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Hunter Thompson
Childhood, Maxim Gorky
The Road to Wigan Pier, George Orwell,
Notes From Underground, Dostoevsky
Great Apes, Will Self
The Plague Albert Camus

Forget those other people. They're only into MMA now because it's been receiving so much "hype" since then. Don't you just hate it when people jump on the Bandwagon.

S**** those other people. They're only into MMA now because it's so "hyped up." Don't you just hate it when people hop on the Bandwagon.

What influenced you to stop following it since 2005?

Moved up to the Bay, got caught up in school.

Then in 2007 (last year of school) UFC bought Pride and I got peeeeeeevvvvveeeedddddd....

I liked the Ring. I liked Bas Rutten and Steven Quadros. I liked PRIDE rules. I liked the fans more than the beer guzzling, neanderthals we've got here in the states. I liked that fighters weren't booed when the game went to the ground. I liked that it wasn't just a ground and pound game (which the cage makes UFC into). So... yeah... that's why.

And now... in the past like... year and a half... BOOM everywhere. And still, when I hear about fans talk about it... they've no appreciation for grappling, no appreciation for the psychological mind game, no appreciation -- they're vulgar, they bloodlust... IDK. I'll need to see a new one to see if the announcing has gotten better and if the fans are still blah.

I actually watched a whole season of the Sopranos! I shock myself. Lol. Before I start Season 2, I'm gonna watch the first Godfather. Me watching mafia movies??? What's next, getting into Gunsmoke? Hmmm. I wouldn't mind trying that out...someday.

As for my husband and I, we're almost finished with the 6th season of the Golden Girls and then we have one more season to go. We only watch about 4-6 episodes a week because it's a before bed ritual on his days off. After that, if I can't find the Golden Palace (very short lived sitcom with 3 of the Golden Girls and Cheech Marin), I'll start watching Home Improvement. I usually get into shows when they're reruns and I tend to like watching them in order.

I've tried to watch Full House from the beginning. I love that show. But it's so sickenly sweet, I can't watch too much at one time.

Tommy Wilhelm

You should check out The Wire. If the Sopranos shows you the world-view of a cynical and brutally honest conservative, The Wire does the same from a liberal's point of view. And it's really, really good; I'd say it's a hair better than The Sopranos, and I really liked the Sopranos. The guys who created the show both used to live pretty close to the real life version; I think one was a veteran reporter in Baltimore and the other was a veteran cop. Supposedly some of the guys he'd arrested played minor roles in the series.

I'm just trying to be supportive in a non-emotional way. I don't want to give her the wrong impression.
Have you told her that a lot of people have rough patches in their marriages (some really rough), but often if they stay together and work on their issues their marriage actually becomes much stronger?

Have you asked her if she and her husband have tried marital counseling, and if she says yes, ask her how many different counselors they have tried? :D

Those questions are certainly supportive (of her and her marriage). There's also no quicker way to turn the wrong type of interest around than to try to encourage the other person to work on his/her marriage. :p

Just don't think about meeting her across the country. Lol. Based on my issue a few weeks ago where I was like the lady you're describing. And don't allow her to flirt with you. Convince her to pretend you're her brother; no incest. Lol. That's what's helping me. That way I can love him...only like a brother. Don't be a JK (initials). Hey, you're not him are you? Lol. I don't think he'd be on here.

Random fact: I was just outside on my porch. You know how sounds carry farther at night? Well, right behind my home came loud noises that made me feel like I was in some sort of scary movie. Two creatures nearby, more in the distance, but the two sounded like they were right at the edge of the woods behind my home. These things were making sounds back and forth, high in the trees, noises something like howler monkeys, but then scaling up to sound like the kack-kack-kack-kack of some jungle bird. A very large jungle bird. More like something was going to emerge from among the trees ala Jurassic Park (the book, not the movie). Something deranged and deadly.

This is only the second year I've heard this, and I finally figured out last year that the vocalizations are from owls (very large owls) calling to each other during mating season. But it still kind of creeps me out, even knowing what kind of creatures are making those sounds.

I've taken nyquil to help me block out noises and fall asleep. It worked wonders for me especially when my dorm mate would turn the room light on whenever he walked in late at night....all drunk and sloppy...on a Wednesday night...

I obviously can't do that now...since Adderall and Nyquil (antihistamine) don't mix well.

I know what you mean by hot summer nights. I was attending college in Arizona at the time. It gets pretty hot over there as you can imagine.

Are you still a Mormon to this day? I actually have cousins who are Mormon and are from Utah. Ha. My family were partly mormon; my grandmother was and my aunt was or is. I'd go once in a while, but the marathon church sessions were too much, and splitting into smaller groups was scary. For a while when I was a bit older I was getting a bit interested and talking to the missionaries; I think my step dad told me to cut it out, if I remember right. I was never into it deeply though. I didn't even really notice the difference between it and regular protestantism.

The bee? I don't know. It made more sense left vague, or seemed to.

Nope. The church has record. But when I moved to LA at 18yo, to get the missionaries to stop badgering me, I told them I died in a car accident. They never came again...

So far, only a couple Mormons from back home still talk to me. I like when people can practice religion without being fundamentalist and righteous (especially when it's against the heart of teachings. Jesus wouldn't be rigid and cruel....).

I got the feeling, watching Big Love, that the show's mormon info was really well researched, but I wouldn't know for sure. I remember an episode where the closeted mormon-fundamentalist guy was having an advertising meeting, where they were proposing to show a subtle temple garment panty-line, or whatever you'd call it, on some actors in one of their superstore ads, to appeal to mormon customers.

A relative of mine got married in a temple (the temple, a temple?), and of all the family, only my grandmother was in good enough standing to attend.

You have to have a bishop's recommendation to participate in those. When you're sealed in the temple (usually when married, rare exceptions for single people) you then wear the garments. So yes, it is a sacred ritual. My understanding is that it's a beautiful experience.

If you ever get the chance to take a tour of an LDS temple before it is sealed take it. I haven't yet, I hear it is phenomenal. As a teenager, I did baptisms for the dead -- so I saw inside that area -- very humbling=-)

I think I gained immense respect for records through the LDS church.

I've never seen Big Love. But, there's a difference between the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, the former still practices polygamy while the latter does not and is the more predominant one, which was the faith I was brought up in.

I love my kids and a lot of the times I do like being a mom but I can't take the constant talking and whining! I feel so selfish. I just want them to play happily in the living room. How hard is that? I just like being by myself. Well, the door is open so I can hear them. I guess I'd like the "seen but not heard" times. I don't know. Makes me feel so bad. Am I a bad mom? (the yelling, yes. But besides that...)

(Margaret Atwood said that pettiness was banned in the house she grew up in, for whatever that's worth) I think I might not dismiss the idea of ever having kids if I didn't get the impression that the mainstream, default position on parenthood is that the task of parents is to facilitate and pay for their child's extremely long holiday on an unholy cross between that pinnochio island, jail, toys 'r us and blockbuster video. There must be a succinct way of putting that... I don't mean 'go all James Mill on the wretches!', or anything, just... Oh, I don't know what I mean, but don't feel guilty!

(Reg. Big Love: I'm not under the impression that the polygamists are more than a lunatic fringe. And, by all means, find the LDS ties strange. I was only ever on the periphery, though; sometimes I wonder if I sometimes exploit it to make myself more interesting)

Heck with your husband! LOL. My husband's a boring concert goer. He'll go for me but I think he's bored. A couple weeks ago I dragged him to see Slaughter and I left him towards the back of the room because I always go towards the front. I can't stand to be way back there. I feel like I'm watching TV or something. I wanna be as close as I can get!

At the Bon Jovi show last year there were some kid shirts that I thought was so funny. "My mom went to see Bon Jovi and she never came back". I should've bought one even though I did come back... Hey, they might have them on E-Bay. Don't know what I'd do with it though. But it's so darn funny.

I give myself hope when I always call my husband "hubby". For some reason, that's just what I call him....especially online. Even if I feel wishy-washy (like I have been lately), it's either hubby or husband. To his face, it's usually "dear". I don't know why I don't call him by his name or his family nickname. I crushed the bone in my elbow, thought it was just a small crack, was expecting to hear 'wow you have super human rejenerative powers and your broken arm is all healed in 8 days" not "you'll need physio and your arm is going to take 3 months AT LEAST!!!

I'm sorry.:(

Random Fact:

Somedays after leaving lab, I continue to "smell" organic solvents for hours afterwards even though I'm particularly careful about my exposure to them.

Ouch! How did ya do that?

I broke my elbow catching myself while tripping over an outside step. Wife fell down a flight of stairs and only bruised her foot. Same day, no kidding.

Wow. You wife sounds tough. I still have yet to really "break" a bone. I had one really ugly dislocation in one of my fingers that chipped a bit of the joint, but I've never actually broken a bone. I hope I never do.

How does that even happen on the same day? Lol.

I broke a bone in my hand once, punching a wall. It would have been miserable if I hadn't got a waterproof cast.

Klutzy meets klutzy. LOL
Actually, we were on our way out to dinner. She fell down early in the morning and I did it on our way out, around 7ish. Made it through dinner and dessert then had to go to the urgent care.

I have breaks all over. Collarbone, wrist, 3 fingers and 2 bones inside the hand and last but not least the elbow.

Metz is this just klutzyness or is some of it sports injuries or something work related?

Sports, but in stupid ways.

Right pinky @ age 8. Catching a thrown ball in dodgeball.
Inside hand @ age 12. Jumping a fence to retrieve a whiffle ball.
Right Wrist @ age 13. Bike racing in a buddies back yard.
Two Fingers @ age 14. Playing football, caught a pass awkwardly.
Left Elbow @ age 30. Slipped on ice, caught myself.

The most irritating argument a person can ever use against me is "you're smart".

I'm curious because I wish people would argue this about me! how is this the most irritating argument? how is arguing that someone is smart an argument?

Smart? I'm going to guess. My guess is that sometimes people say it in a way that makes you feel guilty for being so smart.

If it's anything related to how I feel about it, I totally understand. It's irritating to hear "You're such an intelligent person" ALL the effing time from people mainly because it's generally followed by "You really need to do something with that intelligence"...

Because I haven't tried a hundred times already?! http://img194.imageshack.us/img194/3659/boredn.gif

It's about the same as being told my entire life that I have "Such a pretty face". Well, gee, thanks. http://img267.imageshack.us/img267/740/thumbg.gif Glad to know that's about the only thing pretty about me. http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/5774/flatn.gif

On another note, figured I'd finally post a pic of the new do. ;) It's funny how when I intentionally try to do something with it, it turns out like crap. When I accidentally do something (in this case bleach the whole mistake I created to begin with) I ended up liking it...Haha! http://img28.imageshack.us/img28/9894/laughp.gif

Mom(she also has adhd with very bad temper): I won't accept anything below A+

Me: But I hate school, as long as I pass I'm satisfied

Mom: NO YOURE SMART YOU GO STUDY NOW!

------------------------------------------

Me: When I finish high school I'll be free and I won't go to university I'll do anything but that

Parents: You're smart you have no excuse

-------------------------------------------

Even some of my teachers used that argument

science teacher: You are smart, so I won't allow you to hang with your bad friends, I better not see with them!

Was gonna post this earlier and I started typing it but....(long story)

I broke my arm the day before a family vacation. My brother was on my bike and I was on my roller skates (remember those?) "skiing" behind him holding onto a rope. I decided I was going too fast so I dropped the rope and put on the brakes. Both at once. Can you say stupid? LOL. Remember those stoppers on the toes? Good thing about having a broken arm on that long car ride was if my brother got annoying, I could bop him over the head with my cast. But then I couldn't swim in the ocean (it may have been my first time seeing the ocean) and I couldn't ride a lot of rides at Disney World.

I love your hair too! I have purple streaks, which I had to bleach first since my hair is dark. What's your natural color? One of my friends dyes her hair so much she can't remember what color it was to start with! :)
