I went to the doctor on Friday, and told her how difficult school was becoming, and how I could not focus. She *thinks* I have ADD. However, she says she cannot make a diagnosis since she is only a family doctor. So, I have to go to a psychologist to get a diagnosis at the cost of $600-900 (CAN). The government will not pay for it... I was under the impression that a family doctor could make a diagnosis?
On another note, I broke my toe yesterday. I tend not to walk very often (but instead run) and I somehow fell in the middle of the floor (bad balance). I landed on a single toe, which gave an extremely loud crack... oh well...
All I think you have to do is go to a Physiatrist it cost $170 for first appointment then a $100 med management there after, are you in Canada I heard its different up there.Still should not cost that much.
Chantale I'm in Manitoba and had my testing done through my local mental health clinic. From what I can tell it was a very extensive course of testing. I was thrilled at how complete it seemed. It did not cost me a dime. If you go with private testing your price quoted is about the same as I'd expect here.
We are looking to have our youngest daughter tested and apparently it's not available in our area due to cut backs now! Grrrrr. I'll try and post back here if I learn anything relevant.
Cheers! ian.

I'm here in Ontario, and I never had to pay a penny for mine... it was covered by OHIP. Where in Canada are you?

I live in downtown Toronto right now. I was told that the wait for a psychologist in T.O. can be really long. That is why the doctor told me to go to a private psychologist. There is no wait, but it is really expensive.
Is there any way I can go to an OHIP approved doctor without having to wait 6 months or longer?

Dunno if this helps ya, but I was originally seen by a therapist for depression/anxiety, and after a few months of therapy and discovering more and more of my problems...she worked with my family physician to come to the conclusion of ADD. I was never "formally" tested, though my physician said she would refer me to a psychiatrist if need be (but she knew that money was tight for me)...so, along with therapy, they began me on meds....and things have been getting better since. I'd like to one day have a full neurological examination if I have the money, though.
So, I said all of that to say that it looks like your doc should be able to help you even if you don't get formally tested yet....your doc can work with you to explore the possiblities, and seek therapy, or whatever may be needed to help ya...just my 2 cents.

Well, I went to my school today, and told them what my doctor said... the school is going to give me an assessment for $1000 (tx included)... I think I will take the assessment through the school because there is a chance that the school will pay for most of the $1000 and possibly all of it...
I would wait until I had more money... but I really need some school help, and I can only get this help if I have an assessment done...
