My old apartment was so disgusting, I decided (finally!) that I need & most importantly want to change my cleaning habits.

Every night before I go to bed, I want to pick up things that need to be put back in their places.

I want to sweep, mop, vacuum, & clean sinks/toilet at least 1x per week.
I want to do dishes 1x/day.

I want to clean up any spills immediately.
I want to be able to have visitors on a regular basis.

7/20/10
Today, I brought over some more things from my old apartment
I fixed my DVD storage unit and soaked the dishes.
I also cleaned up after my dinner.

I find that if you turn things around and invite the visitors anyway, then their imminent arrival may do wonders for your motivation.
Remember that thread on this Adder who was in the Oprah Winfrey talkshow? They claimed she did not have ADD because she was able to clean her house before the camera crew arrived.
You need an incentive and a reward to get things done, or you need strict inescapable procedures. Good intentions never work.

Yay! Glad you made another thread. Had a good time on the last one (inspiring!).

Need, want,

...and now

motivation & know how!

Remember to say hello (armed with soap) to my little friends on those dishes.;)

Today, I vacuumed! and. .

My dishwasher attachment was fixed, so I ran it (full of dishes).
I loaded my DVD storage shelves with the DVDs.
I washed the kitchen floor.
I tried to take out the trash, but I dont have a key to the dumpster yet (hopefully tomorrow)

I got some work done

I put bathroom stuff away and rearranged it.

I got a lot done!

sarek - thanks for the reminder. it definitely helps when I have company over. Today, a friend dropped by and tomorrow I have another one stopping over.

fleish - I'm proud of you getting stuff done in your thread!

I'm definitely motivated to keep this new apartment clean. My anxiety has decreased just by being in a clean apartment. I don't feel overwhelmed as soon as I walk in the door.

YAh that motivation thing ...that's where Mike comes in handy, so the dishes get done at least once a day ......and I try to tackle a project at least once a week, this is an old house and he painted when he moved in 20 years ago, but the only person who has really cleaned it at all is me ......so stuff like washing doors, and the walls is needful.......we don't reall;y have a living room , well we do but I'm living in it !

so the dining room is the only public room in the house where people MIGHT be able to sit down, but fat chance of that !...it's crammed with Mike's stuff for ebaying and flea marketing .....not to mention my watches things, a rolly thing with the bands in it, and a desk I found on the street and refinished ....its oak, surprise !...came out nice, but it would be nice to have a spot to have someone over to visit .....

good luck on your new place, it is easier to keep those vows when you're just starting out in a new place ......

Awesome job doing the bathroom.
When I move, I usually must situate that space first...
Altho, I feel like it gives me a lot harder time than the kitchen...

What's your method for it/how do you situate your bathroom?

livinginchaos
07-29-10, 09:09 PM
oops! Forgot about this thread!

For my bathroom . .

I only have a storage cabinet under the sink, that's it (well and 2 towel bars).
So, I'm planning on buying a over the toilet storage furniture thing.
For right now, I have a plastic 3 drawer and I have some misc things (eg: LUSH) in corners until I buy the other storage thing.

I've been a bit lax with cleaning, so tonight I picked up for about 20 minutes.

I swept, loaded the dishwasher, cleaned off the coffee table (somewhat, leaving on it the things that I need tonight). I moved boxes out of the main traffic area, and wiped off the counters.

You're in Minnesota too?!? Lessee,we have a terminal there,so I COULD go to our Invergrove shop for the pm..hmmm.

I have learned to clean the truck and then put it in the shop IMMEDIATELY,cuz it gets messy in five freakin' minutes!

I remember once my ex offered to get me a cleaning lady to come in and help. Dear Lord,I cried NO!! I'd have to clean the place up just to let the cleaning lady in!:D

On the cleaning lady subject brought up by Dane and Rebel...

That reminds me of Marge Simpson!

By the time the cleaning lady comes, she has the whole house spic and span...

Perhaps some associated guilt???

I've definitely been in a few houses that are an absolute wreck but the owner/renter still has a cleaning lady come over. What always surprises me is the lack of remorse they have for all the mess, junk, clutter, dirt...

One guy in particular that comes to mind was a Vietnam Vet with PTSD who I met through a friend. He was a peculiar guy -- never talked about his service to me, but I figured out from memorabilia on the walls and from my friend that the guy was in special forces. He was nearly deaf from hearing damage incurred during the war, so he would turn his TV up so loud that I felt like my face was flying off from the force! He would yell over it, and so had a chronically raspy voice.

We were all watching a ball game and our mutual friend started giving the Vet a hard time about the condition of his house. How it was always so messy and disorganized, and asked how he could even let someone in every week to clean and how could he not be embarrassed? The Vet said in his raspy but nasally voice, "I've already dealt with too much sh*t to clean the toilet."

No I like or try to keep things neat and clean and Im embarrassed to hell to let even people that are close to me in when the dining room table looks like some one blew up the mail truck on top of it. The other problem is I live in a big house close to 3ooo square feet w bro.He doesnt do his part and Im stuck tecnically holding the bag, from paying bills to yard work to house work to home improvement.People will tell me why dont I do this or do that or kick bro out or sell house or why dont bro help you?Im getting to point Im 2 seconds away from saying why dont you ask him your damn self if your so interested and inclined..Theres too many damn busy bodies that dont give a flying **** to begin w,just gotta be up in my bizness.Im a 1 man band w a shovel or yard rake in my hand,I can only do so much and then something isnt getting done because I get jammed up.

I'm at my old apartment. . . cleaning. yuck. yuck. yuck.

livinginchaos
08-01-10, 05:01 PM
This is SO boring!! Anyone have any tricks to getting stains (red, blue) out of carpet?

So far, I've vacuumed 1/2 of the living room, am working on spot treating and wiped down the lower 1/2 of one of the living room walls.

What color carpet?Maybe try resolve,or if its white brake clean will get it out, dont use it on dark carpet because it could take dye out of carpet. If its juice what bout soapy rag,or a little lestoil on a rag and then dry it good.

ment the color of the carpet, brake clean for cars can take out grease and stains, its basically dry cleaning fluid.

right! The carpet is tan/beige. So, I should try brake fluid?

right! The carpet is tan/beige. So, I should try brake fluid?

I found this advice (http://www.doityourself.com/stry/floorcarpetcleaning):

Brake cleaner also does a good quick job of removing most food stains. Dab a little on a clean cloth and gently blot the stain. Rinse with soap and water. Brake cleaner contains the same chemical professional dry cleaners use to clean stains in clothing. Do not pour brake cleaner directly into the carpet. It could dissolve the adhesive holding the fibers in the carpet

Rebelyell
08-01-10, 08:44 PM
NO Not brake fluid,go to auto parts store its in a red can or green can,the green can doesnt have the perchlorethylene in it.CRC makes it.It dissolves glue, grease, brake dust carbon, oil and doesnt leave a film residue.

livinginchaos
08-03-10, 03:01 PM
Thanks so much for that advice! I cannot wait to try it! (it will have to wait though . . until next week).

I'm so over my old apartment, but I still have a lot to do in it. I was supposed to go today to clean, but it's too hot (over 100 degrees) and I gave away my air conditioner.

So, it's gonna have to wait!

Last night, I picked up a bit at the new place, unloaded and loaded the dishwasher. I also am sorting through "misc" boxes and cleaned those up a bit (still have more to do).

βĩο₱Ħعℓĩᶏ
08-03-10, 05:59 PM
Sometimes I wish I had one room for "misc" items...

It's too bad "misc" ends up being my whole apartment!

Working on changing that though... Sounds like you're coming along Chaos, and it seems like you're making your doing a good job of staying within/around the time frame you gave yourself?

livinginchaos
08-04-10, 09:05 PM
Thanks, fleish!

I'm really working hard, and it's taking a lot of brain power to stay on task.

My living room has a bit less "misc" box crap in it. I"m going to continue that tonight.

I also have to vacuum the hallway to earn my keep.

I'm trying to not let my "disordered voice" take me over, it's hard and I'm exhausted.

Fleish - I don't have a timeline, but I think Ill set one.

I have a timeline for my old apartment. They want to start showing it ASAP and I've been saying "not yet" for the past 2 weeks. My goal is to have all but 1-3 boxes out by the 15th.
The reason I'm leaving some boxes is because I paid August rent. I don't want the person to move in until I've checked out and I have a rent reimbursement $$ in my pocket.

I still have a lot of cleaning to do, but I need it to be done August 15th.

βĩο₱Ħعℓĩᶏ
08-05-10, 02:18 AM
chaos, that sounds quite reasonable! just remember that you're probably being harder on yourself for the condition of your old apt than the landlord will be. I have found they're just happy to have a renter that pays on time, doesn't cause a lot of trouble, and takes a bit of effort in picking the place up. People really are nasty, careless slobs much of the time -- the fact you're putting in effort will guarantee you won't be mistaken for one of them.

Something I have been trying out (cuz I'm a horrible mover, and STILL have boxes I technically haven't unpacked)... is just setting out a few items from a box onto the counter. I won't do anything with them but that, then when I pass them again my impulsive tendency rears its head in a positive way... who knows what I'll grab for, why, or where I decide to put it ;-)

I look forward to your house updates... hope you are feeling good in your heart and not too stressed or overwhelmed=-)

I wish, Fleisch. They're going to be tough. They gave me a list of what needs to be done and how much it will cost me if it's not.

I was going to spend all day cleaning, but it's so hot here and no AC in the old place anymore.
I'm not in a hurry. They screwed me over, so I don't feel bad about not letting them in to show the apartment.
I'll try to clean more this week.

in my new place:
I unloaded and loaded the dishwasher, cleaned up the kitchen floor and 1/2 way cleaned the bathroom.

Next payday, I'm headed to a thrift store so I can buy some shelves. Then, I can paint them and finally put more things away.

livinginchaos
08-12-10, 12:29 AM
Today, I took books out of my bookshelf and managed to squeeze the bookshelf into my car!
Tomorrow, I don't work at all, so I'll be at the old apartment (in the hot, 100 degree weather) cleaning and throwing crap away!

I'll probably be documenting this struggle so I can keep myself on task.

(I don't know if it helps, cuz you probably already went to the dr -- My boyfriend has had kidney problems (sponge kidney) and passed multiple stones. The doctor said to drink more than what my bf thought was needed -- and that lemonade or something with citric acid was preferable. Also said to stay away from green tea.)

Thanks, Fleisch. I've passed somewhere around 50 kidney stones and surgery this past October. They're still frustrating 'cause no one can tell me why treatment isn't helping. I love lemonade so I was super happy when my doc said to drink as much as possible! Your poor boyfriend . . stones suck. I wouldn't wish them on anyone!

back at the old apartment! I've only been working at it for 40 minutes and I already have 3 trash bags and 2 boxes. . . (not quite sure where the boxes will reside at the new place!)

It gives me motivation when I read yours, too, Fleisch!

When I first found the blanket, I put it in the trash bag to throw it out.
Even though I won't use it (it's made of the scratchy acryllic yarn), I can't bear to throw it away. My grandma turned 88, it's not like she is going to live forever and I'd feel really bad throwing it away. I'm going to try to wash it.
She said she's making me another one. I wish I picked out the yarn, 'cause she's making this one in the acryllic yarn, too.

Go figure! I found mine in a trash bag too... some how it got in there with some old wool blankets that I found infested with teneid moths. Bless pests that fly and alert me to something that needs tending to....

Is it a nice pattern with nice colors so you could at least use it decoratively?

I wish!! It's only 1 color - blue. It's not really a nice blue, either. I'm not sure what I'll do with it other than wash it.

Since I have to clean the building I live in, I vacuumed carpets and washed windows.
I'm going to pick up my apt tonight, a bit. I'm still dealing with this stupid kidney, so I'm trying to lay low.
Tomorrow, back at the old apt to clean, throw away what I don't need and box what I want to keep.

Fleisch, you are such a wonderful inspiration and motivator!

I think you and I should keep doing this. Hopefully we'll inspire others.

This stone isn't a bad one because it's not causing much pain. When it is painful, it's just for seconds. SO, either this stone is really big and starting to get stuck (which, quit frankly scares the you-know-what out of me) or it's a small one that's making its way down and as it turns in my ureter, the stone must turn to cause pain.
I've had way way way way way worse than this.

One thing that might help your boyfriend when he gets the stones - -
Dramamine. My doc recommended this 'cause I cannot take painkillers very well. He said studies are soon to be coming out that Dramamine helps relax your body. There for it should help relax your ureter, to allow the stone to pass with much more ease. I always take 2, then I can actually get some sleep. I just took 1 Dramamine and 1 Ambien.
I'm going to be O.U.T. soon, very very soon!!!

anywho. .

Tonight, I vacuumed up the building's hallway, washed the windows.
In my apt, I plcked up my kitchen a bit (meaning, letting some dishes soak, they really need to be soaking). I went through my new storage closet and organized it better! I unboxed at least 3 boxes, if not more.
All of that after working a 6 hour day giving facial peels.

Tomorrow, back at the apt, i'm going to spend about 5 hours there.
My GOAL:
vacuum, use the erase sponge to get stuff off the walls, clean the carpets, continue to go through the crap I left there and trash as much as possible.
& Get my stuff out of the storage in the basement.
I also have to get a kid's timecard done that has to happen Sunday night or Monday morning/mid-day.

Then, Monday, I'll come home and clean here. It shouldn't take me too long.

PHEW!! I'm going to put a couple more things away then go to sleep!!!!!

my goal is to have my old apartment be presentable tomorrow.

Fleisch! ! You ROCK! How did you know i Love Wonder Woman!?

I am learning that I cannot live like this again. I'm learning that my organization doesn't have to be perfect, but I cannot keep so much crap in my life.

I'm realizing that I need things like storage racks and bins to help me out.

I'm determined to go go go until I get this room trashed and/or boxed.

oh my. I have lots of boxes and i have no idea where I'll be able to put them in my new place. I think my second bedroom will have to be temporary storage until I have a chance to go through them again and throw out MORE.

You're telling me everyone doesn't see you as a super woman? Common... now, be truthful... you know you are! (Besides, I think you mentioned liking wonder woman on your I'm Moving thread;) It may seem like I am very self absorbed and don't pay attention to other people, but I actually do!)

Let's keep at it so neither of us live in stagnant environments as we did before -- keep our messes in motion.

Thanks, Fleisch!! You completely inspire and motivate me!

I ended up with about 10 trash bags and about 8 boxes. I still have to go through my old closet, but it's all getting trashed.

I'm at my new place and am trying to organize all the stuff I brought in.

to check in:

My new place is maintaining! I continue to bring in stuff from my old place, but am almost done. I've thrown away a lot, and continue to throw away.

I'm really proud of myself for keeping up with my new place, like Fleisch said in her cleaning thread, anyone can pop over and I'll feel comfortable with how I've been cleaning and maintaining.

My parents and sister are coming to see my new place tonight, so I vacuumed, tidied up and am putting things in their places.

It's amazing how my anxiety has decreased since keeping a clean apartment.

I am wonder woman!! :D

I need to make my old apartment presentable, 'cause the owner is walking through on Tuesday (supposedly his son wants to move in to my old place, but I wonder if he's checking on the building, my unhappiness with the place and the caretaker or if he's checking up on the apartment and how I kept it).

I'm at my old place. . . . Brake cleaner isn't working so hot for the carpet stains (and I think it's loosening the carpet adhesive)

But, putting an iron on the lowest heat possible, put a wet white cloth on the stain and place the (low heat) iron on top of the white cloth. Let it sit for about 15 minutes and it pulls up the stain onto the white cloth.

I love this thread! Very positive and inspiring to read!

I like the idea of starting a thread and "putting it out there" as a way of staying accountable, logging progress, and having a place for others to contribute positive and motivating comments.

just to say my mom's place is totally neat - and it's way easier to tidy up an apartment that's pleasantly already tidy. way less overwhelming. YIKES well I have my work cut out for me once I get back.

livinginchaos
08-20-10, 08:37 PM
No kidding, stef. That's why i'm working really hard to keep my new place clean.

Well, I got to my old place around 12p and it's currently 730p. I completely stink!! It's humid outside and inside. I threw out about 12 trash bags worth of crap. I have a total of 6 small boxes of stuff that I might keep, but I could also trash some of them (I probably will trash).
I've been really busy getting the stains out of the carpet (with the iron), cleaning the kitchen and finishing cleaning the bedroom.

What I have left: finish the kitchen, clean the bathroom (pretty easy), clean out 2 small storage areas (most of the stuff will get trashed).
I'm sticking it out at the old place tonight until the kitchen is clean and I have all the boxes I want to keep in 1 area of the apt.
I can't believe I'm seeing the light at the end of the tunnel with this place of crap!!

The owner's son wants to "rent" out the place, so they're coming Tuesday night.
Therefore, I have Monday after 2p to clean the bathroom and tidy up the small storage areas.

I'm renting a steam carpet cleaner on the 28th and that weekend i'm gonna make sure this place sparkles damnit!

oh my goodness. Im so stinky. I have cuts on my feet and I can't believe I said there was light at the end of the tunnel.

This is where I remind myself that it doesn't have to be perfect, that it just has to be decent for the owner & son to check out on Tuesday. THe big day is the actual day I check out and hand over my keys.

There IS light at the end of the tunnel.

There is one particular hike at Zion called Angels Landing. It starts as switchbacks that aren't too taxing, then it gets progressively harder. I remember the first time that I hiked it, I could swear I was going to die by the end of it. I kept asking my sister why is it called angels landing? She said that I would see. I thought I had arrived at the end for the terrain flattened out, I then looked up from the ground I had been staring at where I could only see my foot enter my field of vision. What I saw once I was ready to comprehend was a steep incline upwards a good 100 feet with a rocky path and only a chain with slack laying on the ground. It lead to a small landing out of view--I was so scared because of my vertigo and fatigue. I knew that I had to ascend for my nimble unaffected sister would push me to do it regardless. So, I did. I got to that smallish landing, I looked up and out into the magnificent deep and narrow canyon that had been carved out by a slow, unassuming river. I understood then why it was angels landing. If my sister had told me, I would have never agreed to the hike, would never have had the chance to arrive. I spent not long there before I carefully made my way down slipping and sure footed all the same to the safe flat area to enjoy our simple hikers lunch--I felt proud, enlightened, tired, and buzzy.

I tell you this because you are weary, and it is the last hard stretch. The light at the end of the tunnel is indeed the fact that there is an end. Yet, at the end of a truly arduous journey we may not be able see it, but there is beauty in that focus -- as you said, you have to do it decent enough--you won't fall, and I have my fingers crossed that you will have a lovely hard earned view. These are the times that try and where clarity of character shine.

You will arrive, and there will be a beer:-)

fleisch,

I love reading your posts. you are very inspiring and a great motivator.

There is a light at the end of the tunnel and I'm just about there.
I'm at my old apartment right now cleaning.

~ The bedroom is done except for the walls, baseboard and steaming the carpet.
~ The living room is done except for baseboards, steaming the carpet and the walls up high, oh! And the mantel.
~ The kitchen - still need to mop the floor and get the goop off of it, clean out the fridge and majorly clean it, wipe down the cabinets, clean the oven, wipe down the walls, move out the fridge and stove and clean behind them (this will be DISGUSTING!)
~ Bathroom - wipe everything down
~ Small storages - get the stuff out and wipe down

Tonight, I'm finishing up the kitchen floor, bathroom and vacuum the living room. Then, I get to go home.

I'll come back Saturday and Sunday to make this damn place sparkle.

Something that I ALwAYS FORGET to do and REGRET it in the stage of cleaning you are now at: APPLY CLEANER TO ALL SURFACES!!!

It's so much easier to just squirt some cleaner on then reapply when it is getting dry than to forget and have to use elbow grease instead of letting time and cleaner work for me.

Keep a smile man, you're Almost done...beer beer beer...totally tastes better after earning it!

great idea, Fleisch!
I'll do that!

Grrrr. the (sucky) caretaker came by tonight with the main handyman for the rental company. She got her dates mixed up, so she said. that's crap! I think she wanted to throw me off balance. I could have told her to get lost, but I was nice and let them in.

I thought the owner was with her, 'cause I wasn't introduced to the person with her. It was actually the handyman.
I took off early thinking I'd have time to clean the bathroom this week since the "owner" just saw the place.
I'm so annoyed, 'cause the bathroom is a mess. I've already packed up the bathroom, it's just dirty. BUT, i have time still. it's not that it needs to be sparkling clean TOMORROW. It needs to be by the time I get checked out of the apartment.

I feel . . . ashamed that this bathroom is dirty, the owner wants to see it and I don't have time to clean it. i need to not to feel ashamed and just get those thoughts out of my head.

Another option, but I'm not sure that I'm too keen on it. . .

To wake up early and before work (830a, so I'd get to the old apt around 630a) clean it up a bit and then go to work. It's not too far out of my way.

I'm leaning towards waking up early, not to make it amazingly clean, but just to wipe it up a bit. But, that's sacrificing a lot for me to wake up that early. (I hate mornings).

What do you all think?
Let it be or get in there prior to work and wipe up a bit?

Ah! I hated when my landlord did that! Except he wouldn't call or let us know he was entering...

What I think about the state of the apartment...
You're right, I just needs to be good at final walk through. They may wish they could get ahead start on renting, better to have someone September than October. So what? Since you were planning on doing it, but don't want to because of the unexpected time crunch, take what I call the upperhand. Call the landlord, tell him that you haven't gotten to as much cleaning as you wanted, so please excuse the dirt and assure him that it will be clean by the time you leave.

I ran into this problem with nearly all my landlords--the first time I didn't say anything and I ended up getting a nasty phone call threatening me with deductions if it didn't get cleaned. So the next times (you would think I ha learned!) that it happened, I called first and in follow up conversations I was treated respectably and like a responsible adult.

thank you for being rational, Fleisch!

The caretaker saw the mess of the bathroom today, and she knows that I won't have time to clean it before tomorrow. The owner doesn't talk with tenants unless it's dire.

Grrrr! I just feel like this is all fishy, too. Supposedly the owner wants to see my apartment to see if his son wants to live in it once the issues are fixed. I think he wants to see if I've trashed it. something just seems off about it. The owner rarely ever comes around.

I asked the caretaker to clarify what's going on this week. She said "he might stop by if he's already in the area for business"
Something just seems weird. That's mostly why I feel the need to quickly do a bit of cleaning, but I think I just need to let it go.

I hate it when the rational side of me fights with the (as my therapist calls it) "disordered" side.

Ok. I need to let it go.

Thanks, Fleisch!!!

It's land lords. I used to think my last landlord was sneaky and fishy. Then I realized that he is too involved in his own life that the only time he willingly came by was when he happened to be in the area. Oh, with dates he would also come by to show off his early 1900's Victorian mansion converted to an apartment building. The irony is that he didn't maintain it at all.

Another landlord was a paranoid, uptight couple. They were two faced, and they totally did that for check ups. Make stupid reasons to come over, like change the floater ball in the toilet that was brand new. Then have reasons to come over a early.

Luckily at that time I was living with a type-a personality, organization and cleaning machine.

Then another landlord was just a nice guy and never gave a crap if the apartment was in dissarray. Between two unhappy stressed ADHD adults, one a student the other dude in his 30s with rheumatoid arthitis that flairs up. Yeah, sometimes I was clean mostly it wasnt and te landlord never judged it.

I got my deposit back each time.

Point is, their intentions aren't really pertinent. It was always my shame that made me project anxiety toward their coming over as an external motivation. It just so happened that I was feeling negative and i get paranoid and angry. It relegated me to a second class citizen before I even opened my mouth.

You need to do what you feel you need to do. I just hope that you can find a different motivational source than feelin like he is out to get you (even if he really is!!!)! I just found that coctail of anxiety tooooo tiring.

Hey Fleisch!

Life is crazy for you, too, eh?

I was really really concerned that I wouldn't get any of my damage deposit back from my old place. I just found out that if the carpet stains don't come out then they're subtracting $75 out of the deposit.

THAT's IT!! I get the rest of it back!!

One cool thing that happened:
I thought I had only 3 boxes in storage, well, I had 10. I quickly looked through them and threw away 9!! I'm really proud of that.

I still have boxes everywhere, I'm hoping to have the mental strength to start dealing with it on Sunday/Monday. My kitchen is a mess, but not horrible.

Fleisch, you help me keep the hope alive, too! We can do this!

Only $75!!! Suh-weet! Hard work paid off!

3 to 10 to 1, well done on the boxes. I still have boxes upstairs, stuff on the stairs, crazy bedroom (I will not take complete ownership of the mess, because I do live with someone!). Initially I was sooo overwhelmed and stressed about it all and for awhile I sacrificed cleaning up for sorting/organizing. Looking back... I now know if it were cleaner, I would have been sorting and organizing a lot sooner!

What are you thinking as your plan of attack?

livinginchaos
09-06-10, 08:40 PM
only $75!! I just about cried in relief, Fleisch.

Today, I looked at my kitchen and decided to get going on it before it becomes too overwhelming.

So, I cleaned off some dishes, put them in the dishwasher - 2x.
I need a new dishwasher, though. This one just doesn't clean good enough.
One more thing to save up for!

As for my boxes plan of attack . . .
After tonight, I'm going to try to sort through 1 box per day to get through them.

You're kicking some tail on cleaning/organizing, Fleisch!!

well, the apartment management company has until Sept 21st to get me the check. This has been frustrating. Unfortunately/fortunately I'll be on vacation at that time.

The caretaker somewhat threatened to take more of my deposit, but I reminded her that she told me it was $75 (and $35 for extra garbage removal) for the carpet and the total out of my deposit is $110.

Meanwhile, at my new apartment. . .
I've been overwhelmed, but not by my apartment. i've been working so much (with aggressive children) that I've been exhausted.

Before I head out on vacation (saturday), my goal is to make sure all my dishes are washed and my living room is picked up.

Cleaning? Right now!? Goodness woman, you want to make this new place to work for you, huh? What a way to do so by making it a place you want to come back to after vacation=-) (I hate that part of the vacation when the dread of walking into my apt sinks in).

Is the place as much of a sty as it COULD be based upon prior experiences? (Basically, can you see the effects of your previous labors?)

The stress about your family that you had when moving leads me to believe you feel somewhat the same way in this situation? What things went well at that time? What kinds of responses can you have ready to obviate problems (for reference: when I work with certain people, esp. family, there are things they say that affect me. I can't explain why or how, the phrase elicits an emotion. When many of those happen, I am so far gone that I can't respond rationally or explain why what I feel is rational which makes me defensive... So... I have found it helpful when I take a mental double take, I halt everything and say simply, "What you just said struck me in a bad way, will you say it differently?" or when someone is helping me, but I get derided for not having my sheeit together remind them, "Do you want to help me or make me feel badly?")

Good luck!!

And where does vacation call you to????

It's definitely not as bad as my old place!! I just want to clean it so it doesn't get as bad as my old place.

In regards to cleaning and such, I think my mom finally has an idea of how much I struggle. When I was cleaning out my old place and my mom and dad helped me, i had a big talk with them and I think they somewhat realized how challenging this is for me and that I'll never clean like my mom. I don't expect them to approve or be happy with how I deal with my apartment, but I no longer seek that out.
To answer your question, I'm not really stressed out by her visit tomorrow, I just don't want to go through boxes (although, it does need to get done).

While I don't mind her going through boxes with me, I really don't feel like it and would prefer to go shopping! It's my last day of vacation and I really don't want to spend it sorting through my stuff.

Fleish, I like how you make me think! Thanks :D

Excellent! To doing better at this place, to the better understanding your family has, and to not seeking their approval as to how your space is kept. The last is great because it means starting to give self approval and feeling less defensive (anxious!).

What is a reasonable amount to work tomorrow? It is just as important to work as to make time for play. I think a reasonable amount will involve scheduling in some fun...

My end? Eh, could be better, could be worse. August was sorta stressful, and brought out a lot of anxiety -- which I happen to deal with by slipping into very OCDish behaviors... I haven't yet been able to get that under the best control, cuz nearly anything I do when I'm like this is overboard. Cleaning sorta hasn't been priority bc I will become unpleasantly anal and will explode over stupid sheeit... I live with someone... so... yeah... =-(
