View Full Version : editing things for more hits

Okay part of me feels really stupid and petty bringing this up... but another part of me is having a reaction way out of proportion to what most people would probably consider "reasonable" over this.

The forums here exist as a vehicle for people to communicate with each other. All of your impressions of me are based upon what I type here... in essence, what I type here at the forums IS me. It is the only existence I HAVE here.

Any time you edit something I say, you take words out of my mouth and/or put words into it.

Presenting exactly the right image and saying exactly the right thing is something that is very important to a lot of ADD people. It REALLY bothers me to have my name attached to something I didn't say - regardless of whether that something is a good, bad, or ugly thing. My image has been changed to "try to attract more hits". Would you feel good about it if someone made you wear a T-shirt you hadn't picked out, to try to get more people to look at you?

I understand that moderators and administrators have the right and responsibility to edit things for assorted reasons around here. And it must be a real nightmare trying to moderate a mob of ADD people... especially when half the moderators have ADD as well. That's one of the reasons I resigned my moderatorship--I was perfectly willing to help out the community, and still try to in various ways!--but I know I am annoying enough as a poster, and didn't want to annoy you as a moderator too!

I'm sorry. I don't want to make waves, but when something bugs you, you're supposed to communicate it. I have to admit to a certain fear that you won't take me seriously, based on last time, and that also really bothers me... :(

Thread titles have been edited to make it easier for people looking for help to find help at ADD Forums. Post themselves are only edited on rare occasions to remove private information and other things that do not follow forum guidelines.

Clam...um what are you feeling of your's is being edited? My understanding is that of what Tara said. I ONLY edit thread titles in my mod section to make the subject of the thread more understandable...usually only adding a word here and there. Other than that, I don't edit posts, I either trash dootish posts as I should, or tell an admin when something's not right. So, I mean....what do you feel has been done to your posts? An exact example? ack

The specific example that brought the issue to mind was my poll which I had simply titled "A Lack of Adventure?" It has been retitled "Any Adults with ADD Feel A Lack Of Adventure?"

I wouldn't worry about it if I was you, Jaime, I've been given pretty much the answer I was expecting to get.

I'm also curious where you got the idea that threads were being edited in order to get more hits.

Well all I know is that I am editing the titles according to the guidelines we were given. AND, clam, not trying to sound harsh or anything...but in the example above...isn't that something kinda minute to worry about? Sorry....

From the thread you created on the subject in another area of the site. Read my reply in that one.

EDIT: Sorry, I thought the poster in question was a mod.

To you, perhaps it is. To Tara and BIG, it seems to be as well. Perhaps even to everybody here except me it is. Although I do wonder how Wheel would have felt about it, or danilynn (the author)...

Thinking back, I'm pretty sure I got that particular idea from one of your moderators, when she told me that she edited the thread in order to get more hits... cut and pasted here:

C'est moi, WWC. I apologize if I stepped on your toes...we're wanting to ensure hits on the Forums when folks do a web search for ADD/ADHD, so some titles may be modified a bit to include those searchable terms.

And by the way, smooch, if you are reading this, I don't believe I properly thanked you for being considerate of my feelings in the matter... my thanks and apologies for that.

I'm going to weigh in here, and I'm going to say this once, and as clearly as I know how.

1. Its not the NUMBER of hits that we're looking for, its when someone types something in a search engine, the clearer a title of a thread is, the more likely it is to come up in a search (i.e. "I need help" vs. "I need help with an ADD Child")

2. The forum guidelines clearly state that posts & threads may be edited without notice, for ANY reason, by a moderator or admin.

3. As a former moderator, you know better than most, that the only reason we, as staff members, do things at the forums is for the benefit of the community.

4. If you have further questions, e-mail me.

I sincerely did not mean to irritate or crunch anyone's feelings. Nor did I mean to imply we were trying to jack up "the numbers" in my reply to WWC. My choice of words appears to have been poor, as it has led to much grief. :( My Professional Writing Skills professor would be shaking a frowny finger at me about this since the class JUST discussed being explicitly clear in our written communications.

Smooch, don't worry about it... I didn't mean to sound sarcastic or ironic when I thanked you for being considerate of my feelings, I am sorry if it came across that way... it is one of the drawbacks of this medium that you cannot hear anyone's tone of voice.

At any rate, BIG has indicated he considers the matter closed. Therefore I will discuss it no further.

I also had the same feeling on the editing thing. Some of the words I say, get the *** well ya know... As for these words, they are part of the english language. I don't understand also why in a place were you are supposed to be yourselves, you have to stop and think of another word to use in a place that is not what you would have naturally said. When I've been in situations where you are "supposed to be watching your mouth" and something spilt out because well it's you were talking about, and you say sorry... They never mind, it's not like they haven't heard it before. Granted pornagraphic language, is a different story, I don't quite understand why some of the words I use to express myself can't be used. can you take a poll and ask what others feel on slang words? or is that steppin out of my bounds.

You can take a poll...but the Forum Guidelines are in place for a reason.
