i suspect i also have dyslexia as a side dish of my adhd. from what i read about the symptoms and i did some screening tests i found online i score very high.

my question is, is it worth getting a professional assessment as an adult?

in time i developed my own ways of checking and crosschecking my work, and i am able to use spell checker most of the times. when i speak and switch words in the sentence and stuff like that it is immediately assumed it's because of english being my second language so i get away with it.

i am honestly terrified of going thru the system again and dealing with the long looks of people that don't understand why as an adult i seek children diagnoses. i managed to not give up on my adhd assessment because it was ruining my life, which is not really the case now.

so, others here that have any sort of learning disability, what did you do in that direction? did a formal diagnosis help you in any way?
what are you doing to manage the disability?

Emma, I don't know where you are that AD/HD is still considered a children's diagnosis -- but I hear that a lot from Members in the UK.

If you are in the UK, check out the UK sub-forum (http://www.addforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=98) for more info from UK members.

I think it is worthwhile since there is help available and a proper diagnosis and treatment should provide that help. Best of luck!

I'm from east europe but i live & work in the middle east now. both countries are still so much behind when it comes to adhd and learning disabilities. it's a real struggle to go thru the system and keep explaining yourself. being an adult with what looks a decent life you are dismissed by default. :(

i have an appointment with my doc soon, for adhd. she's monitoring the meds and how i feel etc.

i was thinking if i should mention my concern about dyslexia. i keep procrastinating this (how surprising). i guess i'm still not sure if i want to know.

i don't know how much diagnosed dyslexics score so it would be nice to compare. link for test is here if you want to see who's more dyslexic :D<!--[if gte vml 1]><v:shapetype id="_x0000_t75" coordsize="21600,21600" o:spt="75" o:preferrelative="t" path="m@4@5l@4@11@9@11@9@5xe" filled="f" stroked="f"> <v:stroke joinstyle="miter"/> <v:formulas> <v:f eqn="if lineDrawn pixelLineWidth 0"/> <v:f eqn="sum @0 1 0"/> <v:f eqn="sum 0 0 @1"/> <v:f eqn="prod @2 1 2"/> <v:f eqn="prod @3 21600 pixelWidth"/> <v:f eqn="prod @3 21600 pixelHeight"/> <v:f eqn="sum @0 0 1"/> <v:f eqn="prod @6 1 2"/> <v:f eqn="prod @7 21600 pixelWidth"/> <v:f eqn="sum @8 21600 0"/> <v:f eqn="prod @7 21600 pixelHeight"/> <v:f eqn="sum @10 21600 0"/> </v:formulas> <v:path o:extrusionok="f" gradientshapeok="t" o:connecttype="rect"/> <o:lock v:ext="edit" aspectratio="t"/> </v:shapetype><v:shape id="Picture_x0020_1" o:spid="_x0000_i1025" type="#_x0000_t75" alt="http://www.addforums.com/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif" style='width:12pt; height:12pt;visibility:visible;mso-wrap-style:square'> <v:imagedata src="file:///C:\DOCUME~1\ina\LOCALS~1\Temp\msohtmlclip1\01\clip _image001.gif" o:title="biggrin"/> </v:shape><![endif]--><!--[if !vml]--><!--[endif]--> http://www.testdyslexia.com/ (http://www.testdyslexia.com/)

I wish you luck Dorm....... I was "formally diagnosed" as a child and again as an adult but I can not say whether the formal diagnosis has helped me that much either - I still have to find my own work arounds and I still very much would like to get an advance degree but I hate school and having to write term papers and all that jive so I have done the ADD thing and procrastinated like most of my life

I need to understand myself better to deal better. <- my response

Life is short If somebody "needs to know" you are getting assessed, they typically are in the business and you wont see them often. If they dont need to know, you dont have to tell them. Its your life

i managed to not give up on my adhd assessment because it was ruining my life, which is not really the case now.

I got an ADHD assessment late in life.

I suspect i have dyslexic tendencies but that I dont have dyslyxia. Some errors I make are currently an issue at work but in the past, people didnt mind.
