View Full Version : SPORTS Interests-Player/Spectator? joanrdtobe 04-23-03, 02:51 PM What sports do you like -- to play yourself (with family/friends) or to be spectator????? Ever play in highschool/college???:) :p Andrew 04-23-03, 02:54 PM I like watching baseball & football. Played some football in my earlier days, but after an illegal tackle, I was out for the count. Years later and 2 knee surgeries...I miss the physical aspects of the game, but its still fun to watch. Competitive freestyle snow skiing is fun to watch too. I was also on the varsity swim team I used to teach snowskiing, waterskiing and was a lifeguard too. Hrmmm....can ya tell I have ADD yet? joanrdtobe 04-23-03, 02:56 PM Okay.....I LOVE swimming....about 5 days per week....here at school...heated pool outdoors...and reward is awesome hottub...very bubbly and steaming hot....wonderful...... To spectate.....I'm a die-hard baseball fan specifically of the Boston Red Sox -- growing up we went to tons of games at Fenway Park....had season tickets in fact....started going when I was 10 years old.......Go Red Sox....!!!! NO I won't say here how we feel about the Yankees.......I think they've won 7 in a row so far this year?? :) Andrew 04-23-03, 03:11 PM Yaay...another swimmer :) Pocketplayer 04-23-03, 03:46 PM Cycling-mountain & road, light weight lifting, I used to swim when I had a gym membership, Is drumming a sport? I get a good workout! Like baseball, football, hoops, track & field, pool I will never understand Cub and Red Sox fans. Maybe it's the So Caif influence of having so much and believing in nothing. But, Cubs and Red Sox fans have deep co-dependent roots. The Yankees are having the BEST start in 100 years. In today's playoff rotation, coming in second is fine. Just make it to the playoffs and then the "real" season starts. Andrew 04-23-03, 03:49 PM Go Yankees :D MadMike 04-24-03, 09:04 AM I'm into working out. My specialty is 12 oz. curls. http://www.epic-isti.com/images/beer3.gif misclee 04-27-03, 11:43 AM I wish I did more stuff. I just don't know where to start. I was always really good at sports. Maybe when I finish school I can try to find something I like. It's just hard for me to stick with anything. I joined a gym last year and did really well for a while, but now....20 lbs later....here I sit. joanrdtobe 04-27-03, 01:57 PM Misclee -- not to sound like a "goodie-two-shoes" or anything -- but I'm at school too and as you know school can be quite stressful - and exercise can actually help...like I have this HUGE test on Tuesday...and I just went for a swim...now I don't feel so badly about studying for exam...puts it all in perspective...can't explain it.... misclee 04-27-03, 02:30 PM I agree! I felt so much better when I was exercising.....you'd think, rationally, knowing that I would continue, but I am simply not motivated. Instead, I eat everything I see. Andrew 04-27-03, 02:39 PM Same here....Once I get into the 'habit' of working out...look out. But it is so hard sometimes to get back to working out once I have stopped. joanrdtobe 04-27-03, 02:45 PM Andrew - True...true....and more true...BUT...all it takes to get back the momentum is one or two days in a row of doing whatever -- and BOOM - your back....:) Misclee -- nothing wrong with that -- as long as what you see -- are fruits, veggies, etc.... what is it that your "seeing"?????? :) misclee 04-27-03, 02:46 PM Yes, I become easily complacent. It's a curse, I tell you! Andrew 04-27-03, 02:56 PM Oh I agree, Joan...that's what's happened with my biking. I was doing great....4 miles a day, then I went to boot camp for a week, no chance of biking there. It took me a few days after I got home to finally start biking again. misclee 04-27-03, 02:57 PM What I'm seeing is Easter candy....and lots of it! joanrdtobe 04-27-03, 03:48 PM Misclee -- please throw away Easter candy -- must be stale by now anyway -- and replace with mangos (ever have one?) -- very sweet fruit (yum), oranges, apples, bananas, strawberries, celery sticks, carrots, etc., a few nuts, one or two granola bars, small raison boxes, popsicles, low fat yogurt, sugar free cereal for between meal snacks. :) Andrew -- only away from it a week? Not bad, but you did start again, right? If yes, great...bike today....If not, start again today by biking today....your heart and body will regroup quickly...promise....you weren't away that long.....:) Andrew 04-27-03, 04:30 PM Yep...already planning on biking today, as soon as the inlaws leave the house :o joanrdtobe 04-27-03, 04:35 PM yay inlaws!!!!! :) Spirit 04-27-03, 05:55 PM At one time I ran 5 miles every morning until I blew both knees out in a mountain accident involving a bear...(lol..Long story, some of you know it already). At that time I also quite actively sky dived, hang glided, rock climbed and repelled. Now I swim twice a week and do water aerobics at a civic center about 20 minutes away..wish it was more but time won't allow. In the summer time I do swim more..I go down to the river and swim against the current...now that's a work out. joanrdtobe 04-28-03, 01:19 AM Spirit, um...a bear???? Well, this IS a sports thread and anything goes so if you would like to share your bear story here sometime, I would love to hear it.....:) irish_lady4 04-28-03, 07:22 PM i love to go to the gym to work out and to swim. I love horseriding its my favourite thing to do!!!!. I enjoy watching gymnasticsand i also teach kids to dance which i enjoy doing myself!!!!! ------------------------------------------------------------ MAY THE ROAD ALWAYS RISE UP TO MEET YOU!!! joanrdtobe 05-14-03, 01:22 PM Hey Irish Lady -- I LOVE watching those gymnastics too...those young people are SOOO talented...it's amazing..the balance beam, uneven bars, the four flips in a row thing...the horse thing....SO gracefully done. Hey did anybody know that sexual activity can burn over 200 calories per hour? Now granted it's not a sport per say. but if you're looking to burn calories, hey it works...:) Energizer_Bunny 05-14-03, 06:30 PM Um, am I the only person who can't swim? I was in band and hated marching season....I was always uncoordinated. Never liked to play any sort of ball other than kick ball and that was cause it was a big ball and I have a fear of balls like a baseball hitting me in the face and the sun always got in my eyes. I even have trouble getting a volleyball to go over the net. I love going to rodeos and I use to live on roller skates. I guess that counts as something huh? I do enjoy walking for excercising and I have started to work on toning this bod of mine healthwiz 05-14-03, 06:51 PM Horse riding is my favorite sport. It used to be a significant part of my life. I gave it up during a period when my allergies were so bad that my dr thought I was slowly killing myself by being at the stables. That in part was a factor in my changing career directions. I fell out of the habit of daily riding, and am now having another craving to begin again. My allergies have been under control for years now; the bad part was a phase that lasted a few years where I was sensitive to everything, chemicals, foods, etc. But that passed a long time ago. So I have a date I have not set yet, to go riding again. I just put it in the weekly budget too! If I go more than twice weekly, then I will lease a horse! And ride every day around lunch time. That will be the life...... I love horses! As for other sports, I have no affinity for being a spectator of traditional sports (the ones that involve a ball!). I like watching gymnastics, ballet, modern dance, the circus!, theatre, opera, movies!!!, pretty girls walking by!, anything but sports ...where I would have to watch the ball and see where it went..it feels too reminiscent of SEE SPOT RUN :) . On the other hand, my lack of knowledge of and interest in sports is not exactly the best thing for people who like to converse about sports. It labels me as not being a red-blooded american male. Well, to tell you the truth, my blood is green and blue...but don't tell anyone. Andrew 05-15-03, 06:15 PM http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=nyy GO YANKEES! joanrdtobe 05-15-03, 06:31 PM Thank you Jon -- very nice...Enjoy the horsebackriding...and yes gymnastics and ballet and theater are all very enjoyable...:) Andrew: Um as for your GO YANKEES....we need to have a talk....but first the best website would be this one: http://www.boston.redsox.mlb.com and now that I have checked out the statistics, the Red Sox are a mere ONE, yes ONE game behind the Yankees in the American League eastern division AND they have just beat the Texas Rangers two in a row and are about to win the third...to take a 3-game sweep...PLUS Nomar Garciapara has a 15-game hitting streak....so excuse me but the word of the day is GO RED SOX!!!! k Andrew???? :) Are you still with me??:) Andrew 05-15-03, 06:55 PM lol Joan. We shall see. It should be an interesting race, for certain...especially with Jeter back in the picture for the first time since the season opener. joanrdtobe 05-15-03, 07:01 PM lol YES VERY INTERESTING RACE...as it has been for years...we shall see:).....I messed up the Sox web site above...need to fix it.....Andrew...have you ever been to Yankee Stadium??? I have been to Fenway Park TONS of times but never been to Yankee Stadium in my life...:) Andrew 05-15-03, 07:17 PM Yes, I've been to Yankee Stadium many times! http://www.mlbroadtrip.com/images/photos/august/week5/yankeefront36.jpg Night Game http://reg18.k12.ct.us/lolhs/stark/stadium.jpg Day Game joanrdtobe 05-15-03, 09:35 PM Oh My Gawd.....nice view Andrew!! very nice shot indeed...What are those white strip things behind home plate?? Place is PACKED! How many seats does Yankee Stadium have?? See Fenway is SMALL....just 35,000 or so...and easy to hit homerun (relatively speaking) except for green monster (left field wall) which is tough...but it looks like Yankee stadium it's not easy no matter what!!! Oh I forgot you're a photographer, so not surprising you have this nice shot of Yankee Stadium..well I'm impressed Andrew....hey let me know when the Yankees play the Red Sox, k? or I'll let YOU know!!!:) Andrew 05-15-03, 11:54 PM The white stripey things are are a capital N and a capital Y...for New York. :P and as I mentioned in another post, I can't (nor did I) claim these to be my photos...they are from other sites on the net. Yankees play the Sox on May 20th! joanrdtobe 05-16-03, 04:30 PM WOW Andrew....I'm a little uncomfortable with the number things we seem to have in common......FIRST BASEBALL AND NO KIDDING YOU SAW SIMON AND GARFUNKLE IN CENTRAL PARK FROM YOUR APARTMENT????? My brother was there and he went to GREAT LENGTHS (money and otherwise) to be there.....I think frankly besides the Beatles and Rolling Stones that Simon and Garfunkle are the greatest musicians ever....!!! They can sing/play guitars that's all there is to it! WHich is why the movie, THe Graduate was so great...not JUST because Dustin HOffman was so great in it as was Anne Bancroft but also because S and G did all the background music...thanks for letting me share.... and as for May 20....gentleman's bet Andrew???? Sox v. Yankees??? are we on??? no money at stake...gentleman's bet only.....let's just see who wins, k? And you may take SOME credit for Yankee Stadium photo? no? You PUT it there for us to see, right? I wouldn't have known it was not yours...so I give you some credit, Andrew:) WHo's this Jeter guy? Derek, is it? Andrew 05-16-03, 06:30 PM Yep...I even remember the stage set up they had! Oh and I love the Beatles and the Stones. Matter of fact, I played many of the Beatles' songs on guitar years and years ago. joanrdtobe 05-16-03, 07:01 PM No kidding....yup, I was a guitar player too amazingly enough...for several years...and it stopped at time I went off to college...but not Beatles and Stones music...too hard for me! You remember set up of S&G concert? So Andrew -- you're a New Yorker originally?????? and then moved to Florida at some point??? I thought you were from Boca originally...guess not! Andrew 05-16-03, 08:31 PM Yep...I remember the stage setup..It really stuck in my head, as it was made out to look like an old New York City Rooftop, water tank and all. and yes, I am a born & bred New Yorker. I left New York for California in the beginning of 2001, but after the company closed its doors in June of last year, I made my way to Florida, for what I thought would be a short stay. I'm still here. joanrdtobe 05-17-03, 02:00 PM no kidding...so you were in California...I can understand staying in Florida....by the way....Okay favorite S&G songs: April come she will, the boxer, so long frank lloyd wright, for emily wherever I may find her, feeling groovy, scarborough fare, a most peculiar man, sounds of silence.....tons more By the way, anyone here baseball fans from any city???? let us know!!!! And anyone keep us posted on sports you're doing this summer..... joanrdtobe 05-22-03, 05:00 PM Andrew: So let's discuss Sox and Yankees...okay Monday night Yankees beat the Sox 7 to 3...(boo, boo) but then what happened Tuesday and Wednesday nights???? As of today, Red Sox one came behind first place Yankees in american league eastern division..... joanrdtobe 10-05-03, 04:34 PM HOW ABOUT THEM RED SOX??????????? Now do they continue to add excitement to the fans of Boston or WHAT???? Beating the Oakland A's in extra innings last night....in the post season division title playoffs....to take it to the final game....best out of 5..... Is anyone either following the post season baseball action or participating in any sports......???? Tara 10-05-03, 04:37 PM Wow the Pats and the Sox both won today!!!! bratty 10-05-03, 06:32 PM Oh sports thread :D let's see.... dum dee dum... *thinks* I used to do gymnastics as a child. I played tennis for like 3 or 4 years and swam lots... since i was a child (4 y.o) until i was like 12 or 13. Played in all the jr. varsity teams at school.. soccer, softball, and basketball, oh and also volyiball... oh i also played ping-pong! Atm i am doing karate :D that is the one i have liked best so far. I also liked tennis and swimming too :D might do some spinning sometime. . . hm... now that i look at that.... yeah i never settled down...very ADDish *grins* and yes, I still was a fattish kid :D waywardclam 10-05-03, 06:54 PM I like to watch sports, but as far as participation goes, I need to be relatively good at them to enjoy them... or be playing with a bunch of other incompetents. :D As a result, my competitive urges get channelled more into creative and strategy competitions like improv and chess. mctavish23 10-05-03, 09:59 PM Joan. Now that Im 53, I don't compete any more except with myself in the weightroom.Even there, I've cut back and no longer push things. Before tho, I was always setting goals and pushing myself.I still workout very hard but nothing crazy like before.Ive been sick so I havent been able to lift in a while , but thank goodness for Nordic track..lol.Overall, I'm as competitive a person as you'll ever meet.I guess I'd say I play full contact everything; including chat( just ask BIG).When I played. I played football. basketball and baseball/softball.I haven't played in any leagues in years tho, after I had achilles tendon surgery.Weightlifting is perfect for me tho and I always include at least 30mins a day of Nordic track(everyday). As far as watching sports, I love that too. We have Direct TV and I get NFL Sunday Ticket and watch lots of football.I also love NBA and college football too, esp the UGA Bulldogs. I am a die hard Falcons, Vikings, Braves and Timberwolves fan. On top of everything else, I also collect sports memorabilia and have all my baseball/football cards from when I was a kid. That is one of my favorite things to hyperfocus on.I'm really into autographs now and have quite a few good ones. |
