ADHD and Bullying

(Appeared in the Washinton Post)
Tuesday, April 22, 2003; Page HE09

Northern Virginia social worker Joe Cabush will help parents of children with attention- deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) understand why their children are often picked on and bullied, why bullying is especially harmful to them and why they often pick on and bully other children. Cabush, who works primarily with young people in school settings, will also offer strategies for dealing with ADHD and bullying at a meeting of CHADD of Northern Virginia, a group for adults and parents of children with ADHD.

Children with ADHD are often victimized, Cabush says, because other children see them as being weak. "These kids already have low self-esteem and are vulnerable. Sometimes they completely avoid social situations because they are afraid of being picked on and bullied," says Cabush.

Whether their child is bullying or being bullied, parents should respond, says Cabush, because bullying doesn't just go away. He will offer parents tips on talking to their child about behavior at school, how to role-play ways to deal with bullies, explaining the consequences of bullying, and how to enlist the help of other parents and teachers.

Adults with ADHD may also want to attend because many need to come to terms with how they were bullied when they were children, says Cabush.
