GREENFIELD, Ind. -- A Hancock County principal has been placed on paid administrative leave after being accused of battering a student.

Police said Steven Blue, principal of Harris Elementary School, is alleged to have picked up a fifth-grade student by his neck and lifted him off his feet Friday.

The child Blue is accused of assaulting has been diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, RTV6's Sarah Fraidin reported.

Detectives said the boy may have been "acting out" when the alleged incident occurred.

"It's our responsibility to look into the allegation, and if the allegation proves to be true, it's up to us to take that information to the prosecutor's office and do something with it," Greenfield police Chief Clark Mercer said.

Blue declined to comment when Fraidin reached him by phone.

Fraidin spoke with parents who said they were happy with the way Blue handles discipline at the school, but at least one parent said she home-schools her son to keep him away from the principal.

"I'm just happy to see things might be taken care of, because my personal feeling is the man has no right being around children," parent Megan Johnson said.

Johnson said her son also has ADHD and that she felt Blue exacerbated his problems in school.

"I feel like he doesn't have the training or patience to deal with them," Johnson said. "No matter if the child was acting out or not, the child does not deserve to be hurt."
