View Full Version : Reading long emails, posts, etc...
GOLDILOCKS 07-23-04, 09:34 AM I simply cannot read long emails, posts, etc (emails being "forwards")!
Also, I notice people's replies to a thread are lengthy & mine are very short & to the point (except this one bec. I'm explaining).
Is this normal for ADHD person?
I'm not on any meds, yet. The counsellor is supposed to be dx'ing my "level" of ADHD (?).
I saw her twice, then moved to another town, so now I'm in limbo as far as counselling, meds go.
I also have a problem with "afternoon depression". If I don't get out of the house early & procrastinate (intentionally, or not) to get out like after lunch or so, by that time of the day rolls around, I "can't" get out.
Going to late afternoon/evening events is EXTREMELY hard for me. I want to be involved in PTA's and so forth, and have that desire, but by evening, I'm absolutely NOT wanting to get out of the house :(
Is THIS normal for ADHD? Or, not..?
Meds: If I'm given a choice, what's the most recommended one??
FtLaudWolf 07-23-04, 09:50 AM I'm not a doctor, I've only been to therapy for enough years to have learned something (LOL!!!).
The first part, about the emails sounds to me (not a doctor) like a perfectly normal ADHD reaction to those boring things called words.
However, the rest of it, actually sounds to me (again, I'm not a doctor) like it could be depression. But what are the feelings about it? anxiety? lethargy?
My advice, not being a doctor, is to ask your therapist.
Serena we do what we can and you are too. Some of these things with attention can be learnt and some can't. One of the things that makes things worse for me is when i can't forgive myself these traits. If I'm frustrated at not being able to focus long enough to read the mail or posts it's what it is and I need to let it go! Beating myself up about it makes it worse.
If I really want to read something I'm having trouble with I print it out and go and sit in a comfy chair with a cuppa in a quiet room and that works better than the computer screen for me.
Whether you are ADD/HD or not doesn't mean you can't benefit from some of what people are doing here. Use the search function to find topics that you might be willing to act on and begin to practise some habits that help. Change is a good thing. Or just write your heart out and we will be grateful for what you have to offer. < g >
I hope this helps. ian
GOLDILOCKS 07-23-04, 02:54 PM Thanks, you guys...I don't mind reading at night in bed, or in the living room when it's QUIET (or, since we just got the DISH network, I put it on "Classical Ambience" as I've heard listening to classical music is a good thing, too.)
Maybe it IS the computer screen.
GeminiChick 07-24-04, 04:53 PM I also have a problem with reading long messages and posting replies. Part of the problem is that about halfway through a long post, I give up, so I'm only half sure what I'm replying to, the other part is that I just can't sit there long enough to compose great thoughts. I have several online friends who get frustrated with me because I hardly ever post...not because I don't want to talk to them, but because I just get too impatient to wade through and respond to all their ramblings.
As for leaving the house, I get agitated and depressed if I don't get out. If I don't get to leave until later in the day, I have less energy and feel really antisocial until I actually get to where I'm going, but I can't wait to get there!

To all the "Long-Posters"....try and break up your long paragraphs into smaller ones.
GOLDILOCKS 07-24-04, 07:36 PM Yeah, I only get half the information IF I bother reading it bec. I don't want to reply without being fully informed, so I don't bother.
We have had this discussion several times before so dont feel like your alone on this

*E-boy looks terribly guilt stricken, and shame facedly shuffles out of thread....*
That, by the way, was like my shortest post EVER! Unless you count this one....
I CAN CHANGE! <----Shorter still!
Short or long. I do them all. If I have trouble reading a long post that I would really like to get through I print it out. Just don't ask me to keep all of my posts this short! heh
