I wonder how many of you find listening to music an important influence or reflection of the mood you're in.

Andi

I'm A and B...I not only listen to what I feel like listening to, it reflects how I feel, but also, when I hear a song, it can influence how I feel at that moment. There are those times that I can be in a good mood or a bad mood and then I'll hear that "song". It will alter whatever it is I'm feeling. Music means the world to me...I know I've said it before but there is always a song in my heart and I live to hear more.

I think I forgot to mention...You can vote for more than one choice....I also chose A and B. I find that I'm much more in tune with my emotions when I'm listening to music, and feel more expressive about how I feel, while listening to music.

Music has always been an important part of my life, listening and playing. Although nowadays I do more listening. As for the mood thing I have to agree with Andi. I am very much emotionally effected by and feel the music I listen to.

Music is My Escape...And If I am depressed with a broken heart or Lonely...I put on the songs having absoulutly nothign to do with love...but when I am Mad....I crank up the Music like Disturbed or Linkin Park...."The Tell It Like it Is" and it helps unleash the dragon....and Helps me escape to my other world...The one where nothing is out of my control and I am a DIFFERENT person. THANK GOD FOR MUSIC AND THE LORDS OF ROCK WHO PLAY THEM!!!!!

I'm A and B too. If I'm in a funky mood, I want (clean) rap music, or 70's dance. Me and the girls like to dance around th' living room!

When I'm in my Z, since the bass is B.A.D., baby;) , I want something with a lot of BASS.

Gospel jam music ALWAYS perks me up & puts a smile in my heart...makes a GREAT adjustment for me anyway. :D

We don't listen to a lot of secular music since most of it nowadays is negative, or harps on SEX (IN GRAPHIC DETAIL)...and that's absolutely no good when you'd rather your 10-yr old wasn't going around singing, "It's gettin hot in here, so take off all your clothes..."

OH MAN...If I started on replying to this, y'all would end up with a novel.

I'll just say that I chose the first option because it happens the most...but sometimes I can be affected by the music. I may write more later....

for me what ever mood I am in drives what type of music I listen to. I might be listing to Enya in the morning and classic rock an hour later

I can only enjoy what I'm in the mood for. If I don't already feel that way, it has no interest.

Music is huge in my life...I can definitely help to change my mood by playing certain kinds. When I've gotten up on the wrong side of the bed, playing something fast, rhythmic, and loud, like rap, gives me a boost. Prince *always* makes me feel better no matter what song it is...so does Christmas music.

When the kids are present, we listen to 80s, though, and it makes me feel nostalgic. And we won't talk about the Wiggles, Elmo, and Barney CDs I'm forced to play!

Music has ALWAYS been a big part of my life. It upsets me that ticket prices have been jacked up so high that I have to take out a small business loan to a concert anymore! I've been going to concerts since I was about 16 (so that's been....let's see.....memory lapse....clearing....oh yeah....about 30 yrs ago) It brings me joy, sadness, good memories, bad memories the whole gammet. You can have the TV, just don't take the CD's or my ipod! The great thing about the concerts is (especially someone who's been around forever) that for however long it lasts, you can transport back to a time before everything got so confusing and complicated and truly 'go back'.

It is worth repeating: THANK GOD FOR MUSIC!! Music helps me get things done. I also respond emotionally to certain songs. If I hear a new song with a good rhythm, I usually know most of the words within a couple of times listening to it. I swear I must know most of the words to a thousand songs.

When I'm in a good mood or want to be in a good mood I turn to my show tunes. Yep, I'm a theater geek. I've almost caused car accidents because I'm so into my Chicago CD that I don't notice that the line of cars in front of me has stopped. Don't tell hubby, he worries about me enough as it is. While music is great for me emotionally, it's terrible for my ADD...breaks the focus (unless I'm cleaning the kitchen, then it helps me get it done faster).

my husband wanted me to get up and moving fast the other day so we could get our the door on time...

so, he put in one of my favorite cds .

what do you know, we were out the door on time.... :)

i do the same thing for my daughter when i want her to get ready for school quickly.

i voted for both of the top two answers. sometimes, i play happy music to get me *out* of a bad mood. sometimes i play "dark" music because i'm in a bad mood. if i have the radio on (rarely - i can't stand all the commercials) and i find my mood shifting, i notice it often reflects the song on the radio.

eyeforget -- i love showtunes too! especially chicago! i've even got my 4-yr-old son singin' "if i were a rich man." he loves the "da da da da dee dee dum" parts. :D

we also watch Chitty Chitty Bang Bang which both kids love.

My favorites are Metal, Industrial, techno, plain ol' rock, and classical...o_O

Music is my life. I don't think there is a time during the day when I'm not listening to music. Lyrics are important to me, if the lyrics are talking smack I don't wana hear it. I love playing the piano and fiddling with the guitar, it just releves so much stress.

I also responded to A and B. I enjoy music alot. I drive constantly, and I have over 250 CD's in my truck and now XM radio. I use music to amplify the mood I am in, or to hopefully change the mood I am in or heading for

XM is the only way to go...............

I've always love music, love songs, rock, spanish, anything.music takes me away into clouds.i like to think about things that happened ,good ,bad silly anything.it relaxes me.i love to collect cd's,record cd's i believe i have around two hundred cd's.i'm 32 ,but i know the music.my kids look at me weird at times because i like what they like, which in alot of cases parents don't like what they here now adays,as long as its not explicit.there's too much explicit music and kids shouldn't hear that.

Good thread, Big. I'd have to say that I'm an A/B-er also. The music I choose to listen to is a reflection of the mood I'm in and I also choose music to enhance that mood if it's a pleasant one or get me out of a bad one. When I listen to music while tackling chores, especially things I'd rather not have to do at the moment, it seems to help me stay on task. I find myself listening more to the lyrics or harmonies, than focusing on how I overwhelming a task may be. I have oodles of CD's and albums, but really like virtual radio or cable TV music channels where I can pick from rock, new age, classical, show tunes, etc. at the click of a button. If I go to my collections, I might start thinking, hmmm...I really should organize these, or the cabinet they're in, or the room they're in....need I say more. :D On the other hand, if I have to listen to music that someone else is in control of, ie, "elevator music" while on hold on the phone, it can drive me crazy if it's in contrast to my mood at the time. It can be a very unpleasant experience. Pam

Foo Fighters is my fave band, ok, and "Everlong" is my fave song by them...but it puts me in the most melancholy, hole in my heart kinda mood. GRRRRRR and I just listened to it. I reminds me of back when I lived in my old apartment and was dating a couple of different folks and my best friend vanished on me and I used to smoke...it's making me wanna smoke...go sit outside in the dark under the stars and smoke a cig. I'm listening to Britney Spears one minute, and God Forbid the next. I can't explain my musical preferences to anybody, because I'll listen to ANYTHING. My mood changes rapidly. But yes, music is extremely important to me, more important than food.

Great thread. A & B here, both options overlap each other many times IMO. However I would say that my mood mostly dictates what I listen to. I have several mixes based on moods...(see "As Good As it Gets". Jack Nicholson's character was on to something there). I love listening to music and when I was younger and had nothing else to do with my money I would buy cds and then more cds and more. Now I have one of the biggest collections of anyone poeple I know. Here's a couple observations I and others have made about my interest in music. Ironically I always thought it was just a love of music and until recently never thought about it being affected by anything else.

1) I have a very wide variety of music for a 23 year old male. from Classical, Jazz, Rap, Classic Rock, Oldies, Big Band, Acid Jazz, Indie, Punk...the list goes on, the last group of cds I purchased included Franz Ferdinand, Ben Kweller, Frank Sinatra and Fred Astaire. And I don't mean just 1 or 2 cds from the different genres, anywhere from 10 and up. I think this is due to the deep connection between music and my mood at the time. Also I think I would wear out a certain genre and get bored of it for a while then move on to something else.

2) Friends have often said that I have 'music ADD' and this is well before I actually figured out that I have ADD. Its because I hardly ever listen to a song all the way through. I have to really be in the mood to listen to sometihng, I have to want to listen to it. sometimes I'll put a cd in and listen to a song and then a lyric or a couple notes, or and intro will remind me of another song so instead of waiting till the song is over, I stop it and get the song that I was reminded of. It drives most people nuts, but its the way I enjoy listening to music. NOTE. sometimes I do listen to cds all the way through but usually if I'm in the car or its new, or if its a classic must have album where every song is good.

3) My wife used to get so irritated (now more understanding) because every room I walk into has to have music going. Its not uncommon for me to be listening to songs on my computer, walk into my bedroom to get dressed for something, turn on the cd player in there and then walk into the kitchen to do dishes or something and turn on the cd player in the living room. This is so that every room I walk into has something going. I don't really do it on purpose, but its just that the first thing I do when I walk in a room or get in a car is turn the radio/cd player on.

4) As much as I love music, I never had the patience to learn to play anything, imagine that :) I could never figure out how I could love so many great bands and artists but never could settle down to learn guitar. I have bought several guitars and end up either giving them away or storing them somewhere. Maybe at some point I'll be able to settle down and learn to play.

Living in Macon, Ga during the heyday of Capricorn Records, I listen to the old Allman Bros Band everyday. I also still listen to old Bozz Scaggs and Van Morrison, as well as (very) old Fleetwood Mac.

Interesting I like music from many different genres too. One season I'll like this music the next season I like that depending on my mood. Though sometimes it can be difficult to listen to some music becasue I either was playing it during a depressing experience or it reminds me of something painful. But I am pretty strict with albums. I love albums and I love the journey the band/artist puts you though from the begining of the album to the end... so I try not to switch around... unless of course I'm on my computer and making a playlist to fit my mood.

And I suggest you pick up the gutiar, its a really fun instrument to learn. Its so relaxing and a great way to release stress.

I am very moody when it comes to music. My husband has over 3,000 cd's and I have such a hard time going to the cd cabinet....closet.... and picking something out. It is too overwhelming. He has a hard time understanding that something I listened to and liked recently I no longer want to listen too. It is all a mood. I also have 3 kids and I don't mind their music - especially when working out.

This might sound silly I have one band that I listen when I am down , Iron Maiden . Now the why their music takes you away I mean lot their music deals with issues that are not really reflective of todays world . I do listen to other forms of music etc but I get into my moods I put some Iron Maiden and it does wonders for me

Actually music now that I think about it, is for house work. I usually come in from the the shop and do the dishes before starting in on making dinner. No music no dishes. < g >

I remember years ago Pierrette saying I was a little odd when she saw I couldn't do any cleaning without a loud presentation of some Johnny Winter. Gawd... those were the days.. < g >

Now I still am quite influenced by music. I should use it more. I used to then kind of went dead for about 15 years. I've bought some Cd's recently that I really enjoy though so things are picking up.

I play some guitar too. I'll never be a player. I just can't think in straight lines well enough and can't keep lyrics in my head and play at the same time. But once in a while it's deeply satisfying and like Paul says it's fun. I play daily and have done since 1985.

I've only recently begun to play with others (besides my kids). Now that's fun!

There is nothing like Great Big Sea to lift my mood. Their music brings out the best in me.

I have found that traditional Irish/Scots/Celtic music helps me focus better while working. I believe it is because there is a repetition to the music. Kind of like white noise only better.

I only like to listen to upbeat happy music, because I am a happy person, sad songs, whiney songs, don't appeal to me at all. I like music that gets me excited and aids in daydreaming, I am a very positive person and I never focus or dwell on stressful things (although it physically effects and I have horrible anxiety and panic attacks although I am not in a stressful situation at the time, I suppose it's because I deeply internallize stress). The only music that I listen to that is sad is Fiona Apple, I identify with her lyrics so completely it's overwhelming to me and since I have a hard time expressing my feelings and I feel frustrated, I listen to her, otherwise, it Happy Muscic!

Here's a repertoire of the best music I have ever heard of (be sure to download it at Blubster...trust me! You won't regret it!):

Mozart's Requiem in D-Minor (Full length):

Kyrie ... Kyrie
Rex Tremendae
Agnus Dei (Ipso Facto, that it is the most beautiful musical composition ever)
Credo
Confutatis ... et cetera ...

Mozart's Marriage of Figaro
Mozart's Magic Flute

Baroque music
Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D-minor (etymological reiteration: The Phantom of the Opera)

Beethoven
Symphony number 3, 5, 6 and 9
Exodus
Rage over a lost penny
Tempest
Allegetto

Go download them (its free and legal) from Blubster™ ! They are miraculously reviving and beautiful.

Sometimes I'll listen to a little of this, it won't get it, and can continue on for a while trying to find, what I'm in the mood for, and sometimes I just know. If I'm haveing a "deep" day, you can't beat NIN. They can be as erratic as my brain, Somtimes I'm in to techno and play with my juggling sticks or astro jax's. they are a good way to releive stress. And sometimes I do hip hop looking to dance and talk ****. and I never listen to depressing country, which I don't think I heard anyone mention. There is a good dj by the name of z-trip and his forum in the mixing room is a good place to find some good funk or trance.

Oh man. I live to music! There is always something on at my house or in the car or office. My favorite to clean and get things done to are any songs w/a great and loud beat. My favorite to calm down to are any songs by Marc Cohn-he is a musical genius! I saw a sign one time that said... "If only life had it's own soundtrack" I love that! Hmmmm...I think I'll use that as my signature!

I listen to music when it is helpful, and it depends upon the situation. If I'm studying, it has to be music I don't know the words to, otherwise, I'll be distracted and sing/hum along. If I'm cleaning up around the house, music with a lot of energy behind it really seems to help. My kids dance around with me, too, and we end up getting more accomplished. There was a time I would listen to sad music a lot when I was upset, but I don't do that anymore. It tended to feed my bad mood. Now, I find something else constructive to do...read a book, watch a tv show, chat with friends, etc. This way, I don't get stuck in the low rut the song would encourage.

I checked all three because they all apply to me. In certain moods I will put on specific music that fits them, when my husband puts on certain music I freak out in reaction to it (jazz, in particular), and because I am so sensitive to sound I will avoid music completely when I need to concentrate because I can't listen to it and do something else at the same time!
