View Full Version : ADD and specific pet peeves...
misclee 04-25-03, 05:13 PM I have a really hard time being patient while others blab on the other end of the phone. I can't wait in line. I can hardly stand to listen to slow talkers. I can't STAND being behind slow drivers...I always like to be in front...probably so I can be in control!
misclee 04-25-03, 05:17 PM PS. I don't mean to offend any slow talkers, slow drivers, chatty cathy's, or those diligent people who patiently wait for anything. I simply have my moments....and was wondering who else does:)
Boogiebutt 04-25-03, 05:46 PM PSST! not to be picky but i Hate THEM ALL! :D i am so impatient and my impaitences on things are very short and all of the above well lets just say even annoy me!
To tell the truth, I never really disliked slow drivers until I moved down to Florida - The only state where the majority of the population is twice as old as the speed limit, and drives 1/2 as fast!
Standing in line is not so bad, but people who talk as if they had to consciously think about every word they said is just too painful for me.
irish_lady4 05-08-03, 06:58 PM I dont like slow drivers either and when im on the phone i like to say what i have to and get of the phone again, i hate it when someone calls about 1 thing and ends up chatting for half an hour drives me mad!!!! lol
-----------------------------------------------------------------
MAY THE ROAD ALWAYS RISE UP TO MEET YOU!!
misclee 05-08-03, 07:36 PM Yes, that would be my mother. She calls, speaks slowly, and tells me every single thing she did, moment by moment, throughout the day.
Ugh!!!!!!!!
joanrdtobe 05-09-03, 11:02 AM Agree....GET TO THE POINT....!!!!!:)
Chit or get off the pot. that's what my grammy used to say
joanrdtobe 05-09-03, 03:48 PM I have this one friend (yes a girl) who when she calls -- and always about a latest breakup with a guy -- and I swear there's no such thing as a five minute or ten minute phone conversation with her....it's always an hour...and telling her "I have to go now" well forget it....she's a drama queen....ever know one of those??? so all phone calls are very long and always very dramatic about a guy that just dumped her and listening to her -- well I have to recooperate whenever I get off the phone with her. I feel very drained....and sucked in...and so don't want to answer her phone calls...maybe I'm insensitive...but it's like this with her everytime time she calls...who knows?????:)
andrea76 05-09-03, 06:36 PM my problem, is that i try to anticipate what people are saying,
if only to get to a point that i'm trying to make before i forget. . .
however, i like to guage a persons mood by the way they speak on the phone,
if they're loud, and long - that's fine with me, i'm not gonna get yelled at.
if they're short and short - whoops, i've done something this time
misclee 05-14-03, 09:22 AM Joan, is her name Cristina?? I have one of those too!
I don't know if I TRY to anticipate what others will say next, but I usually can. I'm sure I can be very annoying!
joanrdtobe 05-14-03, 12:35 PM Misclee -- no, her name is Julianne...go to school with her...:) but have known a few Christinas!! (so needless to say, I do owe Julianne a call but DREAD calling her back)
Energizer_Bunny 05-17-03, 02:28 PM I can't stand it when at the grocery store, the sign says 15 items are less. There are apparently a lot of people in this world who can't count or can't read.
In Houston traffic, the word slow does not exist unless your stuck in a traffic jam
joanrdtobe 05-17-03, 03:12 PM I hear ya Energizer...okay Energizer...is 6 bananas 6 items or one? 6 small cans of tuna -- 6 items or one? If you grab something last minute at the check-out counter, does that count as one of the 15 items? Do non-food items count? Is a cup of coffee bought at the store but held in your hand counted?
Actually Energizer, I think it's that they WON'T count or WON'T read...not that they can't....
misclee 05-17-03, 06:49 PM Grocery stores....ugh. What about when it's FINALLY your turn then the checker has to go do something and leaves you there!
joanrdtobe 05-17-03, 07:26 PM Yup....now that IS frustrating...especially when you've been waiting awhile...!
phischeyeat 05-22-03, 12:01 AM Very long winded and verbose people brings out fidgety ADD moments for me. I love talking with people and will do so at length, I just cant handle those who belabor the obvious.
I have a friend who calls and this is how it goes:
"So..... What are you doing? "(I reply, which take me about 10 minutes and covers over 12 topics) and when I ask in return about him, I get: "Well, umm.. I got up this morning, and um I err ..."
Sigh.
I think he called to bring some interest into his life... :D
joanrdtobe 05-24-03, 01:17 PM Kassie:
(pretty name by the way).....SOOOOO relate to this...man i can spout my own stuff...bam bam bam.....in about 5 minutes....sort of a summary about what's going on my my life....and then I ask the other person how THEY'RE doing...and oh my God....an hour later....and to try to interrupt them while they're in the middle of something and say "Gee I really need to go now"...is so hard...
Is this a boundary issue, per chance? Sometimes I feel like a prostitue with my time.....(sounds strange I know but it's how I feel).....I mean should we say to the person at BEGINNING of conversation, "Now so and so, I have only 15 minutes to talk here". Do you think that THAT would help?
anyway, thanks Kassie
misclee 05-25-03, 01:30 AM I try to set limits like that with my mother....no luck!
I hate people who take forever to get to the point, they waffle on and on and :) but usually before they do I lose my temper and just say "come on, get to the point, jeez" or something not so polite
joanrdtobe 05-25-03, 07:49 PM Yup, Paul...totally understand....and have you noticed that more people than NOT are actually like that? On and on and on.....they go.....you wonder if they have a clue???:)
Overload 06-15-03, 03:56 PM LMAO @ joan's "what constitutes 15 items" comment!
I'd like to think I'm pretty patient with most things. Lines don't bother me, I just get a magazine.
It really burns my butt though when I'm trying to hang up the phone and the other person just keeps talking like they're DEAF!!!
I SAID I have to go now!!!!
My mom is really bad with this and it makes me feel incredibly GUILTY for getting miffed about it.
joanrdtobe 06-16-03, 12:22 AM Hey Overload: I like the way you put that...."just keeps talking like they're DEAF!!". Truth is, they're NOT deaf....they probably aren't acting like they are either in my opinion....(this happens to me a lot)....I think they actually HEARD me say " I have to go now"....they just choose to totally ignore it or almost pretend you didn't say it....as they just don't want to stop talking (they like being heard by the wonderful listeners we ADD'ers tend to be) and RESPECT our I have to go now's....:(
aforceforgood 06-18-03, 05:11 AM Or the checker who blathers on to the bagger (about nothing) because she's ****ed off at some other man in her life and I'm the one she has power over and is gonna make me pay... sheesh. there are some seriously retarded people in this world, and the truly retarded look like geniuses next to them...
aforceforgood 06-18-03, 05:16 AM Oh, or here's the absolute worst- people who talk to you WHILE you're on the phone with someone else! Is this just me, or is this as maddening for everyone else too?
Especially the fact that I've told my Mom not to do that to me about a TRILLION times and STILL she does it.
Oh my gosh, That happens to me all the time and then the person on the phone gets upset cause you aren't paying attention to them!! Oh my gosh, yes!
joanrdtobe 06-18-03, 01:11 PM Definitely Force...or people see I'm on the phone (in an office or something), and walk in and say "hi"....(can't you see I'm on the phone darnit?)....and then I get all flustered....:(
Big Wheels 07-02-03, 04:01 AM I checked all of them... but I still love people despite how much they can tick me off! LOL
Here's the worst: going to a major amusement/theme park on a weekend. Lines that literally last hours. I worked in one for a couple summers and learned that Tuesdays and Wednesdays are the slowest days. So now I NEVER go to a theme park on any day other than a Tuesday or Wednesday.... and never during 4th of July week!!!!
joanrdtobe 07-02-03, 01:23 PM Yup...agree with that Big Wheels. My parents recently came here to California for my graduation...we went to Disneyland on a Tuesday...it was June 17 actually....STILL it was very crowded....but can you imagine how it would have been on a Saturday or Sunday??? But we still got to see pretty much everything.....:)
Dannydorm 07-09-03, 04:25 PM incidentally here's a pet peeve. cell phones while driving. people who are spacing out on the road because they are talking on their cell phones. i wish more people would pull over to the side of the road if they are going to talk at length on cell phones.
They all drive me crazy when I'm running late. The problem is, I'm usually running late. Susan
I hate all of them. Has anyone but me fallen asleep on the phone while talking to someone? :p
Yes, yes, yes, yes......
All of the above.
GeminiChick 08-13-04, 12:03 AM I hate talking on the phone, except with my best friend, but that doesn't count. I once met another mom who enjoyed scrapbooking and we made plans to meet...when she called me, she blabbed in my ear for over an hour and wouldn't have stopped if I hadn't said my son needed me...I never did make it to scrap with her...I couldn't face the phone time that might have added up had we struck up a friendship.
free2bme 01-10-05, 09:23 PM slow talkers who insist on yakking to me as i wait in an interminably long line!!!;)
I have one friend who will go on and on and on.... it dones't matter what day of the week or what time it is. I have to literally plan out my phone call to her. I have to make sure I have enough free time to talk to her. When I talk to her, I have to constantly go uh huh, ohh, really.....the list goes on. Its terrbile. I don't mind a long convo, but as long as its two sided and keeps my attention.
chameleon 01-18-05, 03:02 AM Yes, slow talkers make my body tremor, slow drivers bring out the sailor mouth in me, but getting stuck in traffic literally makes me go insane...
Twice I've been stuck in traffic; first time with my eldest son on the way to the store to get cigarettes, bumper to bumper traffic stopped. And stayed stopped. And stayed stopped. My son witnessed the deterioration of his mother's mind up close and personal. Luckily he found it quite humorous as he's a teen. I had no watch but I'm pretty sure that we were there for 45 hours (probably 1 hour) and I think I was 25 seconds away from exploding like a poodle in a microwave when traffic started moving again.
The second time I had all my kids in the car, E-boy on my cell phone, and was leaving a shopping center parking lot when there was a fender bender at the exit and all cars were trapped in the parking lot. More cars came (unknowingly) into the entrance and clogged the parking lot even more. It was hell.--
*E-girl to E-boy: "Dan! I can't get outta here! I'm STUCK IN THE PARKING LOT!!!"
*E-boy to E-girl: "*snicker*"
*E-girl to E-boy: "No! You don't get it! I'm going to go INSANE!!!"
*E-boy to E-girl: "You'll be fine"
*E-girl's sons in unison: "Mom! When are these cars gonna move?","I'm hungry!","I'm DYIN' of thirst!","I have a game paused at home Mom!", "A girl is expecting me online Mom!"
*E-girl starts to tremble, her left eyelid begins to twitch.
*E-girl to E-boy: "D-d-dan! I can't move! I can't park! I can't leave! I'm surrounded! I'm stuck! WE'LL NEVER GET OUTTA HERE!!!! Help me!!!"
*E-boy to E-girl: "There's not much to do but wait honey"
*E-girl, trembling and twitching rolls down her window: "GET THE **** OUTTA MY WAY!!! MOVE!!!! I GOTTA GET OUTTA HERE YOU ******* ***** ******* *******ERS!!!!!"
......... 57 hours later cars slowly start exiting the parking lot. E-girl's bulged-out eyes are glazed over, spittle is dripping down her chin, under her breath, in monotone, she's slowly chanting the Hey Hey We're The Monkey's! song...
Was it fine in the end, or what? LOL! I wasn't making fun of you, you know dear. I am probably worse with that sort of thing than you are because you are so soft spoken and when I am overstimulated in a crowd I rapidly lose my diplomatic nature and start growling at people.
I can't stand slow talkers either and have been known, to the great annoyance of most, to try to jump ahead in the conversation by finishing the idea I am quite sure they are articulating and chucking out my next idea. I am right a good deal of the time, particularly with people I get along with well, but it is a very disingenuous habbit and I've worked hard to squelch it. It drove my ex completely batty and with her I was wrong about what she was going to say most of the time (she and I had very different thought patterns and cultural backrounds, and as quick as she was in a conversation she had way too much love for the dramatic pause). With E-girl, we constantly finish each others thoughts and sentences and it doesn't bother either one of us. WHAT A RELIEF! Verbal short hand is great fun and other people can never figure out what we are on about, but we know and I guess that's what's most important. :-)
chameleon 01-18-05, 11:51 AM I know you weren't making fun of me honey, I just wanted to jazz up the story a bit ;) But hey! It really was 57 hours!...probably....and it really did suck!
I don't think it's hard to figure out what we're about E-boy, I am the female form of you :D We are exactly the same in so many ways, and the ways we're different are simply delightful. For example - I'm sweetly agreeable, you're darlingly stubborn as a mule, I'm a gentle lake of calmness, you're an adorable grumpy grizzled snarling bear. :D
I'm not a grumpy bear!!!! :-o
Besides, I always thought I was more of a labrador retriever. Maybe I've got a few badger traits with stubborness and some temper, ahem, issues, but mostly labrador to be sure.
****Wags tail****
chameleon 01-18-05, 12:18 PM Heehee! I knew that would get your attention :D
It's the brattiness in me, I can't resist.
A chicken and a labrador.....if we had kids they'd be.....labicrakdorins.
herekittykitty 01-18-05, 12:28 PM agh. I have this high-maintenance friend; talking is a huge chore so I try to keep communication to emails. Once we met up and I asked "how are you?" Her reply? "What do you mean? I don't know how to answer that. I have so much going on in my life right now that I can't just give a short answer blahblahblah (cue self-centered long-winded rant)..."
What, has no one ever posed this question to her before? (*banging head against wall*)
My biggest pet peeve is people who chew with their mouths open or talk with food in their mouths. I honestly cannot stand it... I'll lose it. I try not to, but it just... eeeeeeeee.... * shudder *
Once back when I was a Radioman in the Coast Guard I was working a major case - really serious and took all of my concentration. One of the Chiefs came into the Radio Room and stood behind me, chewing like a freakin' Jersey Cow... I tried to ignore it... but I just started to shake... finally, without missing a beat, I took my fingers off the mike, turned and looked him square in the eye and yelled "IF YOU CAN'T CHEW WITH YOUR MOUTH CLOSED, GET THE **** OUT OF MY RADIO ROOM!"
He froze, stared at me, turned around and left!
I was amazed he didn't bring me up on insubordination charges... I just couldn't handle it. :-) It was actually pretty funny. I never, EVER yell at anyone... I'm the class clown... for me to blow up was so out of the ordinary he said he figured he'd better listen to me.
Just about everything else in the world I can just deep breathe through anymore. Including stupid drivers. :-)
Rain
Well i clicked all the choices ( need a coice of "all of the above"). The one that drives me nutters thease days are drivers that dont give a turning signal, slow drivers, slow drivers from lights, slow drivers in the fast lane and u get the picture.
Heidi-S 02-18-05, 07:07 AM Hehe ... I'll do anything to avoid a queue.
I'm pretty susceptible to road-rage, trolley-rage, pavement-rage and any other kind of 'slowbie-in-the-way'-rage.
Not that I get really angry or anything - just frustrated.
And slow talkers absolutely kill me !
BTW - Tip for avoiding trolley-rage : -
Get your grocery trolley and instead of just traipsing round and having to overtake, undertake or otherwise cut shoppers up - go to the furthest aisle and work BACKWARDS !
Bingo !
No overtaking necessary ... no trolley-rage.
Shoot - can I patent that or something ?
Heidi-S 02-18-05, 07:24 AM To those who can't get yackers off the phone line : -
Make your own recording you play down the phone - you know the sort of thing - "yeah ... uh-huh ... oh really ?.... no $hit ... etc".
If you decide to try it, PLEEASE let us know the results.
Heidi-S 02-18-05, 07:31 AM Well i clicked all the choices ( need a coice of "all of the above"). The one that drives me nutters thease days are drivers that dont give a turning signal, slow drivers, slow drivers from lights, slow drivers in the fast lane and u get the picture.Oh-hoh-hoh ... how me is that ?
I hate heavy traffic so much that if I can, I just won't drive on a Tuesday or Thursday (both horrendous in the UK).
Scattered 02-18-05, 04:27 PM Obviously I would prefer not to stand in long line or get stuck behind slow drivers (especially trucks on two lane roads), but I can deal with both, because I usually get lost in a daydream and don't notice the time much. However, people that talk slooooooowwwwwwwllllllyyyyy drive be bonkers! It seems like such a waste of time, when I know where they're going after two or three words and they insist on not only finishing the though but repeating it to or three different ways! Ahhhhhhhh! I actually hurt in my gut if I have to stand still and listen, so I come off looking rude.:o As far as the phone thing goes, I like talking on the phone:D , but not so good at uninterrupted listening.
Scattered
I can't tolerate any of them especially waiting in line and people who give speeches when it could have been perfectly said in a few direct words.
I am not a driver, but I go out with my sister some times when she's driving, she makes driving behind slow drivers fun,she will suddenly swear more than an entire series of south park's worth of expletives, and then starts ranting about every little thing about the driver, she sometimes even swears at them to when she's over taking.
mustFocus 02-22-05, 04:55 PM I guess there are some advantages to being an inattentive type :)
My mind will happily go elsewhere when standing in line or talking to someone. When driving, though, I have to pay attention and slow or inept drivers make me nuts. Unless someone is exceeding the limit by at least 10MPH, I can't stand it. Naturally, love of speed + ADD = 10 wrecks.
