I am having a heck of a time resisting the impulse to cut my own hair. I was able to fight it off last night chalking it up to being tired. The hair is still way bugging, though. It is hot and all in my face. I need a hotline or somthing.

You need a ponytail elastic.

I love long hair.... I mourn cutting mine :(

Ok, I think the meds are kicking in. I think I'm over the worst of it. Time to make an appointment for a proper haircut. Thanks clam, I did the ponytail holder AND and elastic headband for the bangs.

P.S. For those of you who'd like a visual: picture Judy, Gilbert's girlfriend from Revenge of the Nerds. (the accordion girl, not the cheerleader )

Girls, never ask your S.O. if you should cut or (get it cut) your hair. They will be incapable of answering, as they see the situation as being without a correct one. :D

I have cut my own hair before. Plenty of times. Half the time it comes out really cute and the other half....well lets just say I have a hat collection. I have an appointment with my Sister in Law's guy. His name is Dennis and he is good. I went to him once before, when I could afford him, and he said, "Oh girl, please don't tell me who cut your hair!"

LOL you can always count on kids to say exactly the wrong thing! :D

Mrs. Clam just dyed hers. She was aiming for raven black, and achieved navy blue. She's right furious, embarrassed, and frustrated... but everybody loves it, including me! :D

This is too dern funny...
Ok, I have been cutting my own hair since I was about 12! I think I have visited an actual beautician maybe 8 times in the past 14 years....and since I moved here to Del Rio 4 years ago...I haven't gone to ANY.

Now granted, there have been times that the cut didn't come out exactly as planned, but still ok nevertheless. AND, a couple of times when I was a teen, I BOTCHED it up....once in 10th grade, had to wear a headband around my head for like almost 2 months because I gashed the bottom back part and ended up shaving a lot off to make up for it...ACK that was sooooo humiliating...

But, nowadays, I opt for longer hair dos. As a matter of fact, I cut my own hair yesterday! It was bothering me because the style/shape were blah. I had it all almost one length about 3 inches past shoulders, and bangs that didn't stay put. SO, to update my look, and be less hassled by it, I cut long layers....think the "Rachel" hairdo Jennifer aniston had only the front's a little shorter as I had to blend my bangs with the rest of it.....I'll take a pic soon and put it as a new pic on my profile, after I recolor my roots which I am planning to do in the next couple of days.

I've actually gotten pretty good at doing my own hair, and most folks don't believe me when I say I do my own (and I mean I do everything myself, cut, color, you name it). BUT, I have the phone numbers to all of my family and friends who can vouch for me :D

I actually used to use cutting my hair as a "control" issue...thinking that if I just cut some off, I would be "cutting off" the chaos in my life. Kinda of an OCD thing...BUT I have gotten better. I've managed to let my hair grow past my shoulders...in the past, that was unheard of for me because I just wanted to cut and cut and cut.

Also, hubby prefers my hair longer, and I can manage it better longer because I don't have to "style" it perse.....

On a related note, I used to cut my barbie's hair too....it also was a control issue. And, boy, my mom and them would get mad when they would find barbie hair stuck all over LOL

One more thing...the one time I actually kinda regret not using a beautician was on my wedding day. My hair was a lot shorter than I wanted it to be for my wedding. I think if I went to a beautician on that day, I could have looked a little better. Unfortunately I was low on funds, and time. Anyway.......

Yeah, hope you get your hair situation under control flakey. I know I can't STAND hair in my face or even feeling it on my neck lol

:o I love my long hair....I got the 80's Rock Star Hair LOL and I love the way it feels :p It's wild and uncontrolable and free to go where it wants....:D Like me!

Navy sounds really cool! Edgy but subtle. It will probably calm down to black in a few washings. In the meantime, she should put down an old towel on the pillow to sleep on (unless you want black pillowcases).

Actually it has had a few washings already. But the blue is proving nearly as stubborn as she is...

My son is coming with my to hair appointment. His hair is unruly at best. It is dry and coarse and it grows very fast. Right now it is like a blond afro. He boycotted all haircuts this summer and the result is very comical. School rules are that boys hair must not touch the collar so I think he needs a cut before then. He was toying with the idea of dreds, that would shorten it up! I'll post a picture if he'll agree to it.

I get my hair cut about once a year. I like long hair and it takes me forever to realize it needs to be cut & then takes me another forever to actually get to the hair cutters. But I moved recently and one of my new neighbors is a hairdresser. He forced me to let him cut my hair & color it a few months ago ...and he's been bugging me to do it again. It's only a matter of time.

My worst hairdo was when I was in college. I got a perm that was too curly --I wanted just a little body in my hair, but I got tight curls and my hair was cut too short. When my mom picked me up, she brought our dog Mandy ...and Mandy barked at me as if I were a stranger. You know it's bad when your own dog can't recognize you!

Rats! No luck. He wanted five bucks. I will try to find an old one and post it for free. What a little moocher.

Oh man, perms! LOL. My hair has always been poker straight and my mom (who still "sets" her hair each night:o  ) thought a perm would be just the thing for me. She tried a home perm but it didn't take. Then a day or so later at the salon, she did not tell the hair person that she'd tried it herself. That was just one too many chemical treatments for this six year old. It was so poodled-out.

Me, I can't be bothered with hair. When it get's long (i.e. when I have to actually brush it) I shave it off (#1 or #2). Easy and cheap!

My daughter is 5 and we've suspected that like my elder son she has ADD too. We've had trouble because she cuts her own hair all the time! She's very good at finding the scissors! Problem is because she's only 5, she hacks huge chunks out of it requiring emergency treatment at the hairdressers. We've been a little concerned at the behaviour, but now after reading this thread I can see it's probably because it get's in her eyes and is annoying! hehehe.

This site is great, you can spend ages feeling isolated, with a lot of opinionated non-ADD people trying to give you advice, but when you find a site like this and everyone's experiences come out in the open you realise that it's not psycho stuff at all, and can actually laugh. Thanks!

Ya know, I often wish I was a guy because I think I'd get away more with a bald head. Meaning...sometimes I just wish I could shave it all off and start from scratch at times. BUT, my hubby would freak, AND I have funny shaped head. I can tell that there's this funny flat spot toward the back that's off center.

but man, when a person has a perfectly round head....dat's makes for good balddoots :D

Oh, Jaime, you bust me up with all that dooting.

My husband tries to get away with the shaved head. I hate it. He has many, many scalp imperfections, such as weird bumps, lumps, scars, birthmarks and two "knobs" where his devil horns should be. That doot has no business being bald. He has such a nice head of hair, too. If I ask him to get a real barber scissor cut, he acts like it is so major.

He likes to keep it really short in summer, I mean really short like Dex's #1 or #2. I understand though, he works outdoors alot. We have the do-it-yourself-big-family-home-clippers set. I have to watch him because if he and my brother get ahold of that thing, who knows what will happen. Remember when that skater/surfer mushroomhead haircut was in. They really went to town with that one.

Once he did my older son, the wiggy one pictured above. He took it right to the slab and it was B-A-D. The poor kid is so pale to start with, strangers thought he was undergoing chemotherapy.

My hair is so bad right now. Half of it is six inches long and the other half is over a foot long. Not mullet style, but all mixed in together. The short stuff is regrowth from when my hair fell out after the last baby. Pretty.

I haven't been to hair dresser in years. Everytime I think about going I just end up cutting my own hair. It's really funny you started this thread because I actually just cut mine a couple of days ago.

Nothing drastic...I just took a few inches off...

A co-worker of mine actually did a poll last year, asking the rest of us if we thought she was ADD. She's kinda wacky, but from what I saw she didn't have near the same trouble as me, so I said no. But I dunno. I might have to rethink it. She does shave her head every so often. She says it's just sooo much easier to take care of when it's shaved down short. :p Well, I suppose shaving your head cannot be diagnostic criteria for ADD, but I'm gonna revisit the subject of ADD with her cuz the more I get to know her, the more ADD-ish she seems.

I'm new here so I don't know if I am responding to old posts or not but I am sitting here reading in shock. I have a serious problem of cutting my own hair, but I didn't know other people did. I mean I can't leave it alone...it's like an obsession. It's really really short already and I keep snipping at it trying to get it just right so that I can let it grow out so that I can go have it cut professionally. But, even when I've had it cut professionally by a really excellent hair stylist, I come home and if there is one strand that is the least bit longer on one side, etc., out come the scissors. I really want to stop. Is this an add thing? I just started meds. I wonder if it will help.

You do this too?..... The last time I had an impulse to cut my hair was 6 months, my hair was to my elbows, beautiful but I was feeling tried of my hair style. Was up late one night thinking about cutting my hair. But I waiting and called the girl who cuts my hair. She couldn't fit me in for a couple weeks. I walked into one of those chains where you can get a hair cut for $12.00. Not that they didn't do a good job, but it was way shorter than I asked for.

On the up side....I didn't cut it myself........ :o

I thought I was the only wacko that impulse cuts ! ...... COOL ! ;)

1-800-take my scissors from me.

whenever my hair starts to bug me, i start calling around for a drop-in appointment. when i get there, i usually won't tell them what i want, just that i want it a bit shorter, and it *has* to be "wash and go" hairstyle. sometimes i'm sure i'm the beautician's worst nightmare, but, i never complain about a cut. even after the time i ended up with hair so short it looked like mia farrow's. it looks good on her, but, sadly, it was *not* the look for me!

I remember when my hair was all the way down to my rear. Everyone used to comment on how awesome it was. My husband loved it. Then I found out my hubicles had an affair.

Well, one day, about a week after I found out, I had an urge to cut it. It was like I felt like I wanted a different look. The urge was so strong that my body was like being pulled by some unseen force into the salon!

Wow....anyway, everybody that was in the salon that day stood around me while the lady cut my hair into a bob and shaved my neck! I really wish I would have kept that hair for the cancer society. My hair hasn't been the same since then. How I miss it. :(

I was denied the right to have my haircut until I was 16 by my mother...can you imagine all the girls are walking around with bobs and I have hair to my butt and it's curly to boot! *deep sigh* If I only knew then what I know now. Anyways got a female version of a GI cut just to make momma mad the day I turned 16 she flipped and I laughed all the way to my room were I would spend the next two weeks. I was such a rebel.

Man, next time I start looking at wigs in the mall I'll just write you guys and ask for a "hair donation". My hair has never grown longer then about 4 inches past my shoulders and when it does get that long it looks like ...well, you know. All my life I wanted long hair and since my hair is about as fine as a newborns babie, the longer it got the worse it looked, you could see thru it and it had dried ends...So off to the shop I went (after I jabbed myself in the forehead with my own scissors) and told em chop it. That was 4 years ago and now I'd like it to grow out some but have no willpower to make it thru the "flippiy, stick straight up" stage. I couldn't describe what I wanted becuz I didn't know (imagine that, another woman who doesnt know what she wants, she just knows she doesnt want what she has, haha). I hate my forehead and usually tell them dont touch my bangs, the one time I didnt say it... Guess what I got... NO bangs, they chopped my bangs so short (because they kept trying to "straighten" them) that for 2 months I wore a sweatshirt with the hood up.
Soooooo Ms ADD, if you realllllyyy feel the need to cut it put it in a ponytail and ship it to me! :) j/k. I think we all go thru the "tired of it" "want a new look" "drives me crazy" stages. If you always regret it, maybe you can flip thru the books first and find something thats wash n go or get one of the programs that allows you to put your picture with different styles to see how you look with it before you actually do it, then go to a really good salon.

Cryforhelp, my sister had the same problem! My hair grew like a weed, and her's broke like you said, but always looked cool. I always wanted her hair; she always wanted mine. My hair is so thick I can't do anything but wear it straight and long. Like style it like my sister's! I wanted to have bangs, but they didn't look good on me because of my low forehead. Of course my sister always had bangs and looked cute as a button!

I would like to try one of those salons who use your face and try different styles too!

I'm going thru the whole "need a new look phase" Right now I have really short hair that sticks up all over...take a shower and shake your done. Well, now I'm growing it out and it's to the what are you gonna do with me now stage...sometimes I have to really fight the urge to cut it but Doug's hidden the scissors again. Stupid man...Smart man just depends on how bad my hair looks that day lol.

Wow - I never connected the 'hair' to my ADD ! But I've gone there many times my friend ! I've even had such nicknames as " CABBAGE HEAD" to " FUZZY CHICKEN " !
All I can tell you is that ever since I saved up the $13.00 dollars and went to someone 'PROFESSIONAL' to cut my hair , Well let's just say , I look great and am much happier !

I am a long hair worshipper, I love when older people have long gray hair. I never cut mine because it never looks any better. Well maybe my hair could look better, but then my face doesn't. I never have the urge to cut, partly because my hair is so thin it hardly grows. Plus I can't perm or curl my hair, it just is too thin. This way I can do a lot with it. Pull it up, back, braids, lasso, hide stuff, cover stains on my clothing, go topless, and get strangled when I am surfing.

Update: I finally got in to see Dennis. He was in fact quite interested in who had last cut my hair. He seem less than pleased when I freely admitted it was I who had done it. He offered to cut my hair for free to keep my hair safe from me. I had to turn him down on that, but I countered with "Would you take me on a no-notice, no-appointment basis?" He accepted.:D

I cut my own hair too. Thank god I don't have a sense of style so no one cares if my hair looks weird...
I prefer to be beaten by wet towels instead of sitting and waiting at supercuts and some lady touching my head ,trying to talk with me...I am the worst customer...

I've been growing my hair for a few years mostly because I didn't know what to do with it..I only cut my bangs when they get irritating. My mother told me I should cut my hair once I was thirty, and get something nice and short. Since then I've not had it short.

Now I HAD decided to get my hair cut and have it around neck level maybe a little shorter, and told my mom.

This weekend she said, oh why haven't you cut your hair? You said you were going to!

Now I'm furious, cos I so wanted to cut it and now if I do I'll be giving in to her. No one reading this would ever know I'm over 40. Jeez.

Oh wow--this is weird. Actually, I don't cut my own hair, but I have let it grow out so long that I only have to get it cut very infrequently, and my hairstyle is usually to let it dry on its own then put it up in a quick twist or bun. It's the least-fuss "professional" hairstyle I could come up with, and I only have to make and keep an appointment at the salon 2 or 3 times a year. I will note, however, that when I was younger I often had the urge to "cut it all off" (an urge usually satisfied at a no-appointment walk-in strip mall salon) and spent most of my teens and twenties going from boy-cut to curls-down-my-back with horrid regrowth periods in between.

But my sister, who I suspect of ADD (can you say 12 houses in 15 years of marriage, and almost as many different jobs????) has had in the past and sometimes still has a real problem with the urge to cut her own hair. It hits her all of a sudden, and let me tell you, the results are seldom good. :) Oh well, another on a long list of possible clues. What a strange thing to have in common with so many other people.
