View Full Version : AVALANCHE! (An ADD Forums Action Novel)
You get to help and write a story, ADDer style. This is the second in a series of creative writing projects. I will start the story off, and you get to respond to the last post by typing in a phrase the makes sense. As an example, when I start this story with "Once upon a time...", you might respond with "...a long time ago, in a land far far away...: If you end a sentence, please also start a new one. Here goes...
Winters in the Rockie Mountains could be especially harsh, with temperatures often dropping into the single digits. Blizzards were not uncommon, many times dumping snow that could be measured in feet. In the valleys between these mountains is where several ski resorts have popped up, attracting society's rich & famous, the trendsetters and the elite.
John Williams, a 23 year old from Orem, Utah, had dreamed all his life of being a ski patroller. He just couldnt believe that he could be so luck to be paid to ski. John worked at Vail, a ski resort at the base of Vail Mountain in the middle of the Rockies.
As the sun slowly rose above the mountain tops that morning, John looked up and thought to himself...
misclee 04-27-03, 12:21 PM "I can feel it....this day will be the beginning many amazing things to come." He got out of bed, sat at the window drinking his coffee, when there was a knock on the door. He was surprised anyone would be knocking so early...
in the morning. It was Richard, the head ski patroller. Richard would never come by this early in the morning, unless...
misclee 04-27-03, 03:45 PM ..there was a problem. John opened the door and noticed Richard looked upset.
"What's going on, Richard?" asked John
Richard replied, "You're never going to believe this, but..."
joanrdtobe 04-27-03, 03:54 PM there's been an accident....a skiing accident....someone's been hurt....you must come now...get dressed...Hurry.....get dressed....
So right away John put down his coffee and got dressed.....He gathered up all his skiing gear and stormed out of his house.....and......
misclee 04-27-03, 03:56 PM at that very moment, his phone rang. He was in too much of a hurry to answer it, but John was getting a sinking feeling.....things were going wrong.
He knew it was too good to be true. He knew his dream wouldn't last, considering what he had done to get here.
John let the answering machine pick up the phone, as he was struggling to pull on his ski pants and jacket.
Richard was impatiently waiting by the door.
"What the heck were people doing on the mountain this early in the morning", he thought. "The ski lifts arent even running yet!"
Then he heard a familar voice on the answering machine...it was his...
Mother. As he closed the door to his apartment, he heard her asking if he had heard from Allison. John was the oldest of 3 children. Allison was the youngest, and at 16 years old, was most certainly the most rebellious of John's siblings. Allison was always running off somewhere and getting into trouble.
Grabbing his skis out of the rack by his front door, John walked over to Richard's four wheel drive blazer and loaded them onto the roof rack.
As John climbed into the blazer, Richard turned to him and said "...
redletterruth 04-28-03, 10:16 PM "John, there have been four skiing accidents in the past four days. Every morning, a skiier is found on one of the trails, sleeping off a drunk and beaten bloody by a collision with a tree. Something is...."
definitely wrong with this picture. In all the years I've run the Vail Ski Patrol, we've never had anything like this."
John looked at Richard, who was clearly upset, and said "...
joanrdtobe 04-29-03, 02:05 PM "Um, Richard have you heard at all whether these four missing people are male or female or what they are...or do you have any further information by any chance...I mean the ones in the accidents?? You see, my mom just called, saying my sister Allison is missing...and I have a sneaking suspicion...well....I don't know for sure of course but you know...." Richard just looked at him and said ...
AnnAnnAnn 07-08-05, 07:52 PM John sat up in bed and looked around. "It was all just a dream," he thought as he looked at his clock. it was 3:00 in the morning. He'd just gone to bed an hour ago. After a long day of pulling inexperienced skiiers off the mountain, he and Richard had sat in the bar. Richard's stories of past disasters mixed with news of avalanche conditions and beer and shots had muddled his thinking. His sister, Allison, was coming to the resort tomorrow. Her pending visit had heightened his anxiety, "What if something happened to her?", he thought. Then he reached for his....
Lithium Baby 07-08-05, 09:04 PM (I had to inject my madness in here. And as bad as this sh*t might be, it could have been far more depraved for the sake of silliness. Remember that as you shake your head going "That boy just aint right in the head!")
little skiier as it were -- the man had an itch dammit! So he scratched as his instincts lead him. While he did, he thought to himself: "This all might have been a dream but dammit, I must have been buried in the snow naked with this amount of shrinkage. I have seen midgets hung better than I am... Not that I have a thing for midgets. Dammit mind! Stop twisting things on me. Now I am going to have that dream again about the seven midgets in leopard skin thongs, singing "I am every woman!" I definitely have to call my therapist tomorrow. This is getting ridiculous! If it werent for the lithium..."
(Good luck recovering from this one.)
KnittingJunkie 07-10-05, 12:59 AM When he'd "wrapped things up", so to speak, John walked into the kitchen and was happy to see the newspaper, which reported a significant decline in skiing accidents over the last month. He was proud to know he'd been a part of that. He took his Lithium, as well as some Ativan (to help with those nagging thoughts of midgets), then got a towel and headed for the bathroom to take a shower. When he opened the bathroom door, he was shocked to find...
