View Full Version : Chocolate & ADD
EYEFORGOT 08-06-04, 11:39 AM So who doesn't love chocolate? I once met a person who said "Chocolate doesn't love me", but I think this had to do with bowel movements. It could be just an allergy I have, but too much chocolate affects me in a very drastic, emotional way. So just stop eating it, you might say. Yeah right. That would involve self control and consistency, we're talking about ADD here! So, I've cut back. If it's not in the house I'm good.
I was curious if anyone else experiences increased mood swings, anxiety and spasms of anger if you eat too much. Does it exasperate your symptoms? I noticed my 5 year old, who I suspect to have ADHD has his hyper-ness exaserbated by eating chocolate. I avoid feeding it to him at all costs because he goes from being fairly well behaved to bouncing off the walls in 2.2 seconds. I was curious if it's an allergy, related to ADD or my bipolar? Are there any other foods that effect you emotionally, i.e. sugar?
p.s. I did do a search on this subject but there is too much material to go through and I just didn't see this specifically. I did make the effort though.
jaimegerise 08-06-04, 12:21 PM LOL I had to laugh at your first paragraph as I read it out loud....heh
Anyway, I honestly don't see anything wrong that happens when I eat chocolate except gaining weight :D
fasttalkingmom 08-06-04, 05:54 PM I get hyper, then sleepy and grouchy..... I'm told for me it's a sugar sensitivity

One of the most pleasant effects of eating chocolate is the "good feeling" that many people experience after indulging. Chocolate contains more than 300 known chemicals. Scientists have been working on isolating specific chemicals and chemical combinations which may explain some of the pleasurable effects of consuming chocolate.
Caffeine is the most well known of these chemical ingredients, and while it's present in chocolate, it can only be found in small quantities. Theobromine, a weak stimulant, is also present, in slightly higher amounts. The combination of these two chemicals (and possibly others) may provide the "lift" that chocolate eaters experience.

Thanks for the input. This might be related to both my ADD and bipolar. I have lots of mood swings. I don't think amphetamines and stimulants are what my brain needs. Hmmmm, she ponders, and nods to her knights and wise men (or women) in gratitude.
EYEFORGOT 08-07-04, 09:32 PM My midwife told me that eating ONE hershey kiss a day during your pre-menstrual time (the *itchy days), will be beneficial to negative emotions.
YEAH RIGHT! Who can eat ONE!?
tamarama 08-07-04, 09:36 PM Chocolate is very calming and soothing to me, although it could be just psychological ;-)
