I read a pretty good book called Versification: A Short Introduction, by James Mcauley. Not that anyone should make their stuff rhyme, but getting a feel for the patterns helps, I think. I found this book fairly easy to follow and not too jargony.

I'd say, also watch out for the associations a lot of words carry; some carry so many that, aesthetically, they don't even mean what they say anymore. I think this goes even more so when you're dealing with words that have been used in a narrow context for some time: they're supposed to mean what they mean, but they'll still have that context all over them whether you wanted that sense from them or not. Then what can happen is the mood you've been using will get broken into and interrupted by the mood that followed the word in.

Arlov: it's a little unsettling, but it's well written; I think it's good.
