The Dog Trainer's Guide to Parenting
by Harold R. Hansen
BabysitterCindy 10-11-04, 04:24 PM I have "The Discipline Book" by William Sears, MD, and Martha Sears, RN. They are the original proponents of "Attachment Parenting" and raised 8 children. I liked it a lot as a general parenting guide. They also have a book out "The ADD Book". Has anyone read it? Is it worth reading?
EYEFORGOT 11-08-04, 11:05 PM Through several links within a link I found a bunch of books written for children (anywhere from 5 to teenager) who have ADD. There was one book especially that I wanted, something about a bear who learned to calm down. Can anyone help me find this link, or these books? I can't BELIEVE I didn't book mark it in my favorites.
EYEFORGOT 11-09-04, 09:36 AM It's at ADD Warehouse (fantastic books, a must see!)
ADHDmom2000 08-06-08, 04:55 PM Does anyone have any suggestions on books about kids with ADHD that are also gifted/talented?
prtsimmons 08-06-08, 05:34 PM Here is my suggestion for 'the lighter side of ADHD' reading - not for everyone, but former hell-raising little boys and their parents will probably enjoy it:
Real Ultimate Power: The Official Ninja Book, by Robert Hamburger
Nominally, it's not even about ADHD/ADD. It's a work of fiction that focuses on the various reasons that ninjas are way sweeter than pirates. It is definitely written from the perspective of a 10-year-old boy with ADHD - a perspective that I don't hear very much. (Let's see, I've read books & websites from the perspective of the parents, doctors, pharma reps, sociologists, teachers, public servants, investigative reporters, big-name authors, purveyors of holistic remedies, naturopaths - did we forget anyone? Oh yeah, the KIDS...)
After having read at least 10 or 15 books on ADD/ADHD, I can honestly say that this is my favourite. Not the most useful, but definitely the most entertaining and therapeutic.
gunnmom 02-20-09, 02:42 PM I just read a book called, "The Gift of ADHD." I really think its one of the better ones. This book offers exercies and role play suggestions that can help manage behavior and all in a most positive way.
This book has opened my eyes about ADHD and it has shed new light. I have even gained better confidence in myself as a parent becuase of it.
There is a lot of useful and practical information inside.
Crackerjack 02-20-09, 04:06 PM "Healing ADD" by Dr. Daniel Amen.
It's easy to read and gave me more insight about my ADD than any other book I've read.
If you happen to have kids who are always picking fights, especially for seemingly no reason, check out Chapter 14.
Parenting/School Strategies - Chapters 21 & 22.

ImNotThatCrazy 04-29-12, 01:28 PM It has been quite some time since this thread has been updated. I read the reviews on the books posted in the OP and although they are good books, all but one are from the 90's and lets face it. In the last 10 - 15 years, A LOT has changed with the understanding and managing of ADHD.
Please post your suggestions for books published in the last 5 years for a more updated approach with today's life styles. I know my family does not run the same today as it did in the 90's we have different needs and daily routines today.

Smart but Scattered: The Revolutionary "Executive Skills" Approach to Helping Kids Reach Their Potential [Paperback]
Peg Dawson (Author), Richard Guare (Author)
Parenting Children with ADHD: 10 Lessons That Medicine Cannot Teach (APA Lifetools) [Paperback]
Vincent J. Monastra (Author)
ImNotThatCrazy 04-30-12, 03:40 PM I am glad you recommended those two books. I took the initiative and about 5 hours of my time to read just about every review on amazon for pretty much any book about ADHD, no i'm not hyperfocused, lol.
I ordered the first one digitally for my kindle app on my Xoom and read through the Parenting Children with ADHD: 10 Lessons That Medicine Cannot Teach in about 6 hours. I bookmarked many pages and highlighted many strategies that I am going to implement. I am so excited to try to make things more comfortable and fair about learning to control behavior problems for myself and my child which we both have ADHD.
I also ordered Getting Your ADHD Child to the Aha! Moment: Effective School and Homework Strategies which I will begin reading later this week.
The other one you recommended is on my list to order either tonight or tomorrow the same way, I am sure I can read it in one or two days as well.
As a side note I also ordered this one which I am in the middle of right now and has a lot of nice tips for us adults with ADHD: Your Life Can Be Better: using strategies for Adult ADD/ADHD
teadrinker7 06-09-12, 11:32 AM I'm wondering if anyone out there know of any books on ADHD in Swedish?
I've read "5 gånger mer kärlek" (5 times more love) and it's great on raising kids, but not specific to ADHD... any tips?
swimmom 06-12-12, 01:04 PM The Family ADHD Solution
The Energetic Brain
swimmom 06-12-12, 01:10 PM Hey, I'mNotThatCrazy ... is that Getting Your ADHD Child to the Aha Moment geared more toward elementary years? My son is a junior in high school and it seems like the book might be more K-8?
ConcertaParent 08-28-12, 09:18 AM They also have a book out "The ADD Book". Has anyone read it? Is it worth reading? Is The ADD Book by Dr. William Sears and Lynda Thompson still worth reading? After reading several books this summer, I won't have much time left to read. Anybody highly recommend any of the following?
- The Open-Focus Brain: Harnessing the Power of Attention to Heal Mind and Body (alleviate depression, anxiety and ADD) or Open Focus for Kids.
- Parenting Your Child With ADHD, 2012 by Craig Wiener.
- Attention, Girls! A Guide to Learn All About Your AD/HD by Patricia Quinn.
- Superparenting for ADD: An Innovative Approach to Raising your Distracted Child by Edward Hallowell.
- The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Families by Stephen Covey (recommended by Dr. Russell Barkley).
