Pychiatic disorders at work

Posted 08-22-08 at 01:12 PM by SuperChan
So I work for a fire district (as a secretary) and I greet walk-in patients all the time. Yesterday was the first time I have seen someone who was having psychotic symptoms, and I didn't know what to do. Even with my own experience of mental illness in my own family. Luckily, he was calm and only confused looking for help.

The worst part is that I didn't know how to get him to ask for the help he was seeking. Since he is not a danger to himself or others, we cannot commit him unless it's voluntary, entirely by his asking us to do so. I know that he will be coming back today and now I am hoping to be able to help him.

This truly was a humbling experience, and made me greatful that I do not have to deal with these situations at my own home (not yet, and hopefully not ever).
