Blessed are the peacemakers

Posted 05-13-11 at 12:05 PM by Song of Mercy
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called the children of God. Matthew 5:9

Maybe more than any of the other Beatitudes Mt 5:9 reflects the nature and character of God.

In the Word of God the word nature frequently refers to the spiritual parentage of a person. Thus when Adam broke the covenant of faith with God in Genesis, it is said that he inherited the nature of fallen Lucifer. Likewise, when Jesus by faith (trust combined with action on the plans and purposes of God) went willingly to his own death He reestablished the covenant which bestows familial ties with God. For example, we have all heard someone say, such and such a person has their father's kind nature or their mother's patient nature. So, as with all spiritual realities we see this principle in the world around us.

In addition to reflecting a parents nature, a child will often learn and integrate their parents character traits. For example, if you were raised by a parent who always kept their promises, always paid their debts and made every effort to follow through on their commitments, it would hardly be possible for you not to have these traits in your own adult life. This is true of God and those who dwell with Him as well.

In this Beatitude God reveals Himself. The Father declares that those whose attitudes, actions, and interactions create and promote peace are His children. The Father is peaceful by both nature and character. Furthermore, when our lives reflect Him we prove we are His children; we know we walk in His favor.
