I've never posted on a blog before so please let me know if I have done something out of the norm. I am feeling fairly hopeless at the moment and am hoping to connect with individuals that may have been in similar situations that could offer support/advice.

As a child I was treated for ADD/ADHD. I stopped taking medication after high school for personal reasons and "wanting to live a normal life" I guess you could say. I really got off track for quite a few years, made some bad decisions, before really getting my act together and going back to school at the age of 23. I started college and quickly started struggling with being able to complete projects and distractibility. I frequently spent time reading and re-reading chapters, all the while thinking about something entirely different than what was in front of me. I decided to talk to my primary care Dr. about re-initiating treatment for my ADD/ADHD. He started me on Adderall and after a few months I really noticed changes, not only in my school life, but I had also received a promotion at work.

Fast forward now 6 years. I am a graduate student in my second year of pharmacy school. In the last 5 years, I have seen 5 doctors (not by choice, I have always been at the same clinic, but they either quit, or moved on). My most recent Dr. quit about 6 months ago and so I am seeing a new provider. I am required to see her every 3 months. At my first visit with her, she made me sign an extensive medication contract agreeing to urine drug screens, and pill counts in addition to many other things. The contract was 3 pages long and included about 50 different bulletpoints outlining the terms of the agreement.

What really bothers me is my interactions with my last few providers. It is always uncomfortable at each and every appointment. They ask me when I come in, " So what are you here for today" and I reply, "for a medication review" (Which the Dr. already knows). Then they ask me one question, "so how is it working for you?"- I respond that it seems to be working well, I mentioned feeling slightly more agitated lately. Then the Dr. says ok well, we will see you again in three months and leaves the room. Then the Medical assistant takes me to the bathroom to do a urine drug test.

Here's where I get emotional:
My Dr. called me today and told me that she would no longer be providing care for me because my drug test came back positive for alcohol which is a breach of my medication agreement. The first thing I did was review my medication agreement, which is a photocopy of the original and has "no Etoh" HAND written off to the side of one of the bulletpoints that says "no substance abuse". The next thing that happened is I felt an overwhelming sense of abandonment and shame. Was I just a problem that she wanted to get rid of?

Not that I have to explain, but I had a cider on Sunday night before going in to the Doctor Monday morning. I am not an alcoholic and have never had issues with alcohol. I whole heartedly wasn't aware it was written into my contract that I shouldn't be consuming alcohol on occasion, and my doctor never mentioned it to me. But she didn't-even-ask-me-about-it. It was almost like being fired with no chance to explain yourself. Now I am faced with the daunting task of finding a new doctor, who will probably also stigmatize and judge me. Is this just the norm? I know as a pharmacy student, I would never want my patients to feel like I do right now. ]]>
