Welcome to the forum! I don't have personal experience with drinking/substance use problems. You mention that you have "burning skin." Do you know what's causing that?

You mention that ADHD testing could take a year, but that the doctor wants you to try Ritalin. Do you have to get ADHD testing before trying Ritalin, or is your doctor allowing you to try it right away? Ritalin, if it's the right medication and right dosage, has effect right away, so it could be helpful to try out the medication.

My daughter has adhd and anxiety. The physical symptom she has had is feeling like bugs crawling under her skin. For her an SSRI has worked (Zoloft 150 mg). But she is also doing mindfullness meditation with an app called Headspace (cost about $10/month). Meditation, over time, is supposed to help with anxiety. Perhaps you could try that. Not a quick fix but it may help over time.

That's a very low dose. Docs do that to monitor for unwanted side effects.
If there aren't any side effects, you should be able to increase the dose slowly
and hopefully you will reach a dose that's helpful.

My granddaughter did very well on Concerta, but it didn't last nearly as long as
the drug company claims. She needed a booster dose of Ritalin after lunch.

Why can't your psychiatrist assess you for ADHD? Seeing a specialist is preferable but it's not mandatory i believe though I could be wrong.

It sounds like you've switched from alcohol/street drugs to prescription anti-depressants/anti-anxiety drugs.

All these take some time to work through the system. To me it sounds like you may be primarily experiencing the withdrawal process. After taking some psychoactive drugs it takes months for the brain to re-adjust to the non-medicated state. It is common for another medication to be prescribed because the withdrawal symptoms get confused with the original symptoms. This means you are never experiencing the symptoms of the underlying condition, just repeated cycles of highly unpleasant withdrawal symptoms.

If you have depression and particularly anxiety, these are symptoms of something, not the thing itself. Psychiatrists only have one tool in their box - medication. What they do is treat symptoms, not causes.

There will be a reason you self-medicated with alcohol/street drugs. Exploring what that reason was is potentially a way forward. You are unlikely to find this through the NHS so going to a third sector counselling service for longer term counselling (not Person Centred or Relational) may help uncover what causes your symptoms.

If there is ADHD present, medication is useful, but not always the whole story, particularly in someone with your history. Psych's will be wary of prescribing controlled drugs, because ADHD meds can trigger psychotic episodes/relapses in people with past drug alcohol misuse.

This means you need to take control of your own process and find a good therapist to help you through this difficult time. As I said previously, this doesn't have to be NHS based, you can either go third sector or private.

How long has it been since you stopped the drugs and alcohol?
