talking to yourself

Im staying at my mas house at the minute while I look for another place and the other day she said do I know I talk to myself a lot.

I do know but since then i 've become really aware of it how much I do it.

I dont know how to break the habit cause it just happens and I dont know why I do it.

It is seriously ******* embarrassing getting caught by a stranger nattering away to yourself walking down the street. It happens when Im not being self aware.

How do you stop doing it when you dont even realise it?

Not only do I talk to myself, I also make sound effects for things I'm doing.

I'm not really embarrassed about it. I like to call it "quirky and charming." Although I'm not sure other people feel the same way!

I don't have an answer for you, but I thought you'd find some comfort in this thread here.

I do this because I have so many scenarios going through my head that I'm acting out. I try to do this in private, though. They happen automatically, but I've been trying to catch myself lately. I think the ADHD mind becomes more undisciplined over time, unless properly treated. I should know, I've been untreated for the majority of my life and it's been quite difficult to concentrate on most subjects, and this has increased over time to the point that even with subjects I do enjoy, my attention span is drastically reduced. I just don't see the "reward" at the end of the tunnel. Instead, I've drifted increasingly into a fantasy world. Only through my own extreme effort have I diminished this habit, but it hasn't gone away completely. Re-training the mind takes time, if it happens at all.

It is so easy to slip back into letting the imagination take over.

Yesterday I found out my six year old nephew had arrived when I was on all fours muttering about someone dropping towels on my floor, getting it caught under the wheel of my chair, when I looked up and saw him right in front of me.
Auntie is just having a bit of a whinge...to herself...out loud. It's what grown ups do.

:giggle: LMAO!

I talk to myself all the time and play out all kinds of scenarios but usually in private. It seems to be most prominent when I am driving.

I talk to myself all the time, at home, at work etc... Some of my coworkers do as well. Honestly, I think it is healthy. I just think that some people are verbal processors--we need to say things out loud in order to make sense of them etc... I'd bet ADDers talk to themselves more than the general population seeing as how prioritizing, strategizing, planning and such can be so hard for us.

I talk to myself to substitute for my otherwise lack of an internal narrative. If I want to translate my thoughts into words I have to speak or write. Otherwise, my thought processes tend to be a series of still and moving images relevant to concepts, events, people, etc. on my mind.

So, I talk to myself very frequently.

I find by talking to myself out loud it means I can listen to my thoughts properly and sometimes see a mistake I was about to make and correct it. I am at my happiest when I work alone with no noise to distract me and I can talk with out fear of others laughing at me.

I've noticed that talking aloud to myself has several advantages:
- By saying the main points out loud, other irrelevant distracting thoughts and feelings are overruled/overvoiced.
- It aids in concentration also by eliminating surrounding noices.
- It can work as a kind of coaching-effect. Of course, it can also be done be your intenal voice but saying it actually out loud seems to make it so much more powerful.

I actually get an audience when I'm working underneath our old house. Roommates actually love the sound effects and dialogues I carry on with tools or materials.

"Nooooo, why plumber's wrench? Why you listen to gravity and fall down the hole! You know I needed you! Lirp-lu-mu, FU-MANCHU, you silly pvc connection!! Let go!!!"

I don't do it to entertain them, just me, it lets me vent frustation and keep working with a chippy attitude! But it's nice to hear my "audience" roar w/ laughter bc me thinks me pretty comedic sometimes!

OK, I'm not the only one! I do the sound effects, the dialogue and chatter like a monkey. I just tell others it's a life walk thru.

Do you ever get mad at yourself for mumbling?
At least I don't ask myself 'what'?
I hate to be misunderstood

With modern technology, anybody can talk to themselves, just get an earpiece and mic and your good to go, no ones the wiser.
