The average amount of time women spend on housework

According to the new Good Housekeeping magazine, 19 hours a week is roughly the amount of time women spend on housework.

... :lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol: NOT ME!

But then I thought about it, and I'm curious. How much time do you spend on housework roughly per week?

-Are you like me, where you avoid it like the plague, and just say screw it? Or,

-Are you the type that runs around the house for hours, convinced that it isn't clean enough?

I guess we've already probably hashed over this topic already, but it happened to catch my eye and I immediately dropped the magazine to post this, because well, I thought the "19 hours a week" thing might amuse some here :p I couldn't resist...

Oh, and the article reads "Clean less, relax more"

Why, I already do that!

When I had children that sounds about right, tho I slacked quite a bit too.

Now, when it's just me... No way.. And I do keep my place fairly tidy.

Re: The average amount of time women spend on housework

I used to be much more anal about keeping everything spic and span when I was younger, especially when I had roommates.

When I lived alone, I kept things pretty neat and clean, but wasn't nearly as anal.

But, once I became a step-mom, I learned pretty damn quickly that it wasn't worth the energy I was spending trying to keep everything nice and neat and in it's place. (as if)

Our home is definitely "lived in", but not nasty dirty. Multiplying the amount of stuff needing to be cleaned in the house by 4 vs. just 1, was a rude awakening, fo' sho'!!

Now if we could just get the hands that help keep it clean to multiply as quickly as the stuff does, we'd be set!!

I started on the laundry mountain...now it's more like a hill. I got to the part where I had to hang up shirts, and I said "I'm outta here"

When th mess reaches knee height I spend a couple days cleaning with loud music on, taking occasional naps on the piles of laundry :p

I try my best to tidy as i go and then do a proper clean on sundays... And thats me working hard at it, so my place is nice... And id say it wouldnt add up to... Maybe... Eight hours tops? I do live alone in a small two bedroom apartment, tho, so i really do go a bit overboard (from fear of what life was like when i was a packrat lazy mess maker, lol)... So i dont know what the other eleven hours are for? My mums the same and she has a husband, a dog and a bigger place! Id say twelve ours with a full family would qualify super-neatness!
Each to their own, though:).

I think you guys must seriously underestimate how long it takes to do housework, I wonder if this is some sort of time blindness.

A load of laundry takes minimum 1 hr to complete, a load of dishes 1/2 hr, taking out garbage 5 minutes, etc...

If they spend 19 hours a week doing housework, they must be reading their Good Housekeeping issues on the toilet, because I don't know when else they'd have time.

I think what makes it hard to estimate how long something takes to do (for me anyway) is that I rarely spend an undivided block of time doing one particular task. Especially stuff like laundry, and even washing dishes.

The average amount of time I spend on housework is directly related to how much time I would rather spend screwing around. The screwing around bit usually takes priority.
