Re: Have you ever had your tonsils removed?
Yes, when i was little i had chronic ear, nose and throat problems. I got tonsilitis frequently and medicated a lot(too young to remember what with).
I had sleep apnea, got ear infections to the point where i had to wear ear putty every time i came in contact with water, and snored like an old man, lol. I had my tonsils and my adnoids removed when i was seven. My sleep apnea was cured, and also my chronic ear infections. I still had major throat and chest infections up until the age of 16, though:(. But all is good now! :) xxBB |
Re: Have you ever had your tonsils removed?
the exact same thing Boho said, down to the ear infections.

Re: Have you ever had your tonsils removed?
I only had tonsilitus once .....but it was a doozy, got down to 97 pounds and ran 105 temp for 3 days....my dad was this close to putting me in the hospital......
I was supposed to move to Sonoma that weekend and went home and said Daddy I have a sore throat, and he said ...nope you've got tonsilitus....and whoomp, I was down and out within 12 hours....took 3 weeks till I actually got moved..... so anytime I get a sore throat, I panic and immediately rush to lay down until it goes away......most folks my age have had their tonsils out, it was the thing to do when I was a kid...and having them out as an adult is no picnic ....supposed to be more dangerous, and certainly more painful..... |
Re: Have you ever had your tonsils removed?
I've had tonsilitis a couple of times, strep throat a few times.
My oldest granddaughter gets tonsilitis at the drop of a hat, also earaches, often followed by strep throat. In fact she woke up crying this morning and I called the doc's office. Yep, strep again. She has not had her tonsils taken out. My youngest granddaughter on the other hand, hardly ever gets tonsilitis or strep. But she developed sleep apnea from enlarged tonsils, and got them taken out just before her 10th birthday. |
Re: Have you ever had your tonsils removed?
Did I read somewhere of a theory that tonsillitis in early childhood might be connected with ADD? Something to do with it causing sleep apnea maybe. Might explain an increase in ADD when tonsillectomy went out of medical fashion.
I had chronic tonsillitis up to the age of seven when they were removed. Several days of ice cream for every meal is not something you forget at that age. |
Re: Have you ever had your tonsils removed?
Never had tonsillitis (as far as I know), still have my tonsils.
Used to get lots of ear infections as a kid, and did have tubes put in. I've heard of a possible link between ear infections and learning disabilities -- probably related to auditory processing (which is hard to do when your ears are full of gunk!). But I don't know how well substantiated the connection is. Certainly plenty of kids have recurrent ear infections without developing LDs or ADHD. I don't know how strong the evidence is that kids with LD and/or ADHD, all else being equal, were more likely to have recurrent infections. My mom had her tonsils out as a kid, as did many people in her generation. She probably has ADHD as well. Again, I wouldn't bet on any connection, but couldn't rule it out, either. |
Re: Have you ever had your tonsils removed?
I don't have any solid theories at the moment.
Curious that's all. I had my tonsils out, because of all the same sinus, and ear infections. It seems most doctors try to treat infections with medication instead of removing the tonsils, more since I was a kid. So far in my opinion. The overall ADHD sensitivity we are born with might be part about infections. The ADHD sensitivity can make us more suseptable to infections, but the infections don't "cause" ADHD. |
