therapists keep taking me for a ride

im seriously ******. its been like two years of bs going through therapists and insurance problems that I finally got some **** prescribed for "ADHD" and my therapist said shes going to prescribe me something for ADHD today and then proceeds to give me some wellbutrin and tries to pass it off as a ******* stimulant saying "don't take it later in the day or youll have trouble sleeping!" and I asked for vyvanse and she says "oh, well usually I don't prescribe that at all until someone has gotten used to ADHD meds for at least two years, and youve probably been watching the commercials, thats all hype" omfg the ignorance that she showed me made me want to throw the ******* chair at her face IM so ******* ****** at how stupid people are that this therapist can even be called a therapist is beyond me, and then she questions if I even have ADHD or not, and its like, well, test me then? But no, she wants to put me on ******** wellbutrin and proceed to ******** me about the ******* prescription like Im an idiot. you guys dont know how much I had to hold back, my face probably looked like a ******* pony on steroids. and i cal her a therapist but she actually is the one prescribing me the meds but she is more like a therapist because all I hear is ********. so **** it.

If I were you I'd be gunning for the test first. I also don't get how you know the med you asked for is right for you, you tried it?

Sorry to hear you had trouble with it. I also assume the med she gave you doesn't work for you, can you say why?

well I haven't tried the wellbutrin yet, but Im already taking an anti depressant seroquel, Ill try the wellbutrin just to try it, but I dont think anything but a stimulant will work, I mean I got BAD ADHD, like my friend who has ADHD told me once "i think you have adhd", like its seriously that bad where I think only a stimulant can help me, and truthfully I need the stimulants more than he does and I dont get them. They want me to wait AN ENTIRE MONTH of just taking this seroquel and wellbutrin, but it feels like I NEED A STIMULANT. it feels like i absolutely need it, I felt weird my entire life, and people always treat me as weird too, like them and there ******* remarks trying to mess with me cause im different, thats why I got no friends anymore, and frankly im tired of it and i dont care if I dont have friends anymore, I just want to be able to read a paragraph of a book and not have my mind wander to something else, and I want to be able to sit still, and sit straight, and pay attention, and theres so many things I want but whatever I guess I just want the stimulants cause deep down I know thats what im going to need and if you knew me and in some fantasy world doctors would be more lenient to prescribing stimulants you would give me something. But yeah of course, im going to try the wellbutrin, but ive tried so many other things that dont really do what its supposed to do, klonopin, seroquel, a long time ago they recommended me celexa, now they want me to try bupropion. but now im getting this other doctor since shes going to be out on maternity leave. so i guess ill let him know my concerns and i will ask for a test for ADHD that i know i will pass (i mean seriously if you knew me in real life you would think I need a strong stimulant) anyways thanks for listening and sorry for the rant and all the negative emotions i put in these posts. just needed to vent a little i guess. also the celexa I tried one day and stopped after that, and today the wellbutrin got prescribed.

I have ADHD symptoms and there treating me with anti psychotics and anti depressants. im so frustrated. during the day some things **** me off so much. like my uncle right now in the bathroom whistling making it extremely difficult for me to concentrate.

Vent away  Where else can you vent where people really get it? :)

Have you been diagnosed with bipolar or anything? Seroquel is typically given to bipolar or schizophrenic patients, although I have seen it prescribed for other things.

Yes I have been diagnosed as schizophrenic but i don't know if I really am, you know what I mean? But hey what do I know. If I am though, I don't think that's the only thing wrong, I believe myself to have ADHD also (if that is possible, I really don't know).

It is possible, but you'd need a good pdoc that can figure things out for you. It seems like you don't really care for your current doctor. Any chance of switching?

It is pretty typical to change only one medication at a time. She must feel that trying the wellbutrin right now is the best plan. After she sees how it affects you, she can add other things or modify things. It is a long process.

Just don't go off your meds! My cousin is schizophrenic and every time he thinks he is fine and goes off of them he ends up back in the hospital. :( It stinks.

She should be telling you WHY she prescribing things and what the longer-term plan is, so that you have more of a big picture.

I'm going to be talking to a new doctor in a month. I'm not sure on what to ask him. He is a doctor that she is referring me to because she is going on leave. I'm thinking of changing where I go to somewhere more local, maybe I can talk to an ADHD specialist, at this rate it seems hopeless that I will be getting the medication that I want, I don't understand why they don't take anything I have to say into account, they want to do everything there way. This is probably all because of stimulants being a scheduled drug and people abusing them.

Perhaps. I'm also wondering if they are more concerned with stabilizing the schizophrenia part of things before they mess with the ADHD part. Maybe your new doctor will be more insightful or informative?

I hope so. All I need is this seroquel and a stimulant. That's all I really need in my opinion. I don't know about this wellbutrin stuff. But I guess I'll try it.

I know it is pretty common for people with schizophrenia to be prescribed an anti-psychotic along with an antidepressant, anti-anxiety, or anti-convulsant. Sometimes finding the perfect cocktail makes all the difference! I would just voice your concerns and ask about why changes are being made and what the long term plan is.

First of all there are no tests of any kind for adhd. Second of all, tell this therapist doctor to go f**k herself and find one that will give you the treatment you deserve.

HolyAlchemyzt: I hear your frustration and impatience and feeling like you're being made to jump through a bunch of pointless hoops. It's only natural to want to feel better as soon as possible.

But I think your doctor might be on the right track wanting you to try Wellbutrin.

With a Dx of schizophrenia in the mix, dopamine is a delicate balancing act. It's very understandable that your doctor would take a cautious approach with medications that affect your dopamine.

Stimulants (amphetamines, methylphenidates) and Wellbutrin both increase the amount of dopamine available to your receptors, but you could say Wellbutrin does so more gently than stimulants. That's an oversimplification, but the main thing you need to know is this: if you have a low threshold for psychosis, stimulants carry a bigger risk than Wellbutrin for putting you over that threshold.

Although Wellbutrin is less frequently successful than stimulants in treating ADHD, there seems to be agreement that it is sometimes effective. It also has a potential to improve the negative symptoms of schizophrenia, which could make it a two-fer if you have negative symptoms.

(I'll add, Wellbutrin is a very interesting medication that has been finding uses treating a surprising array of different conditions. Can you believe that I actually took it as an immune modulator to help with my pregnancy? It makes some people irritable, but it actually made me feel calmer - I loved it. As antidepressants go, it's one of the better-tolerated ones, doesn't have sexual side effects, and is one of the easier ones to start and discontinue. )

This relatively benign medication has some reasonable chance of working, it actually does make sense to me that your doctor would like you to give it a try.

Re: therapists keep taking me for a ride

Thanks everyone, I really like this forum, everyone here is very helpful. I tried the Wellbutrin, I think it is the instant release, it did seem to help, with other stuff, beside concentration, but I do like it so far, but it seemed so short lasting...I feel like I want a bigger dose and a longer released version like XR if there is one for Wellbutrin. I noticed Wellbutrin helped, I wouldn't say it helped with concentration, but maybe for other things like Depression maybe, I don't know I can't really explain it. So right now I'm taking Seroquel and Wellbutrin, and I like this combination, I still think I need a stimulant, because I notice my terrible concentration, it's really weird but I think you know what I'm talking about if you have ADHD, like you can really notice it when doing certain things, like if you're playing a videogame on the xbox, maybe someone can relate to what I'm talking about, of course I haven't been officially diagnosed, but honestly it just seems like I do have ADHD. I will continue taking this Seroquel and Wellbutrin at the prescribed doses until my next appointment. I am thinking of calling tomorrow and setting up an appointment in two weeks instead of a month. They gave me only 75mg of Wellbutrin. It seemed so weak! At the peak of the pill, I just wanted it to stay there for longer, but it was just so short.
