ADHD Meds and Menstrual Cramps?
Hey all,
I'm new to everything add related. I just was diagnosed and started taking Vyvanse about 2 weeks ago. I hope this is the place for this question... Usually my cramps only begin the day that my period begins, but I was feeling uncomfortable for a few days before it began this time. Then, yesterday morning, I went for a short, easy and slow run (I am a college Cross Country runner, so I am used to the slight increase in cramps that usually correlates with running during that time of the month). Yesterday, however, I was in so much pain that I sat down on the sidewalk and could not get back up. A neighbor ended up seeing me and drove me the rest of the way home. Today, I am still in much more pain than I am used to. The only thing I can pinpoint that is different than usual is the Vyvanse.. Has this happened to anyone else while on adhd medication? Or does anyone know about the effects the medication might have on menstrual-related things? Thank you! ~Kels |
Re: ADHD Meds and Menstrual Cramps?
I'm on the last day of my period right now. I've been on Concerta for the past 2 weeks for the 1st time of my life. I didn't really see a big difference in my period. I also take Yasmin (the Pill) so I'm very regular and never get cramps. However, I *think* that there might have been a difference in the discharge the few days that preceded my period (light beige for 2-3 days before, usually I only get it the day before). I also think that the period was a little less abundant. So far that's all I've noticed, but I will have to see next month how it looks like before I can say it's the ADHD meds that made the difference, as I also changed my sleeping schedule and alcohol/cigarette consumption habits since I'm on the meds! Anyway I hope you won't get such bad cramps next time!

Not taking any, but I read that stims can cause muscle tension.
Period cramps are caused by muscles around the uterus becoming tense in rhythm with the contractions, and then failing to relax. Warmth (hot water bottles etc) and slow, rhythmic movements should help. If you have the chance to, go for a walk when you feel your cramps starting. Also, work on your breathing. There's this exercise that makes you stretch your stomach muscles when you inhale, so that your stomach bulges as much as it can, and pull in the same layer of muscle with exhalation, using slow, deep breaths. I've forgotten the name of the muscle, but it's the one used for pulling your stomach in, and many women never relax it. If your cramps continue nontheless, go to your gyn. |
Re: ADHD Meds and Menstrual Cramps?
From what i've read, stimulants deplete magnesium + vitamin B. Magnesium is important for the muscles. I was prescribed adderall a little over 2 weeks ago and have been taking magnesium everynight. I started my period today and I haven't had any cramps. I don't usually though, so I'm not sure if that helps.
