Do stimulants improve driving skills?

I'm 19 and next month is when I'm supposed to take the driver's test. Since my ADHD is severe and I can totally see how this would affect driving skills, I'll probably fail the first time unless a stimulant can significantly improve how well you drive.

(I have a permit now but have never used it.)

Drugs don't improve driving. Practice, practice, practice.

You can practice all you want, but if you daydream or lose focus while driving then it is not going to matter.

Thank the lord. I was so afraid there for a while that, since my ADHD is so bad, I'd never pass the driving test.

They say accident rate for people with ADHD is 3-4x higher than the general population. I wonder what'd happen if a drunk ADHDer tried to drive. haha

If i am driving in an unfamiliar area or in heavy traffic, I would much rather be medicated.

Medication helps me focus without driving past the posted speed limit. Medication and a radar detector works best for me!

The ONLY reason I don't have more tickets is because of cruise control.

I would say that stimulants give you the ability to develop your driving skills. I think the same is true of anything. Stimulants are facilitators, not means to an end.

They seem to make me better at anything I do, haha. An example? Unmedicated, anyone who plays videogames even 1/4 as much as I do could kick my *** in any game. Medicated, I have yet to see anyone beat me at any video game.(see as in played with them in person)

Unmedicated, trying to bake cookies from scratch ended in the kitchen smelling like burnt cookies and the smoke detector going off. Medicated, trying to bake cookies from ended in what a few people called "The best cookie I've ever had that wasn't from one of those expensive overly fancy bakeries.".

I could go on forever.

We are on the page, but our views are a little different. I think the stimulants help you focus, which makes you a better gamer.

Nah, we both have the same view, just worded differently. I'm not too good at most things I do BECAUSE I can't focus, therfore stimulants make me better at those things.

My first impulsive thought was along the lines of

"yeah because I am less likely to run you off the road being in to big of a hurry because I lost track of time and am running late again . . . Sorry the ADHD made me do it :o

This part of your post with worth repeating

Medications help me be more able to keep track of the passage of time but I still have to learn how to manage it productively - It is I who must learn this.

Medication does not give us ability we do not already any more than mowing your lawn will give you a car you never owned - Mowing the lawn simply makes finding your car parked in the middle of the yard possible!

Re: Do stimulants improve driving skills?

before i went back on prescription meds, i was drinking a lot of coffee every day to somewhat help with my ADD. I did decide to quit my coffee, and i actually became a very bad driver, falling asleep at the wheel twice (thankfully no one and no car was hurt) and I noticed I was rather inattentive when I was driving. so I decided to drink coffee again to help me with driving.
I sense switched to Dexedrine, and its having the same effect on my driving
