Do people around you expect you to be perfect on your meds? Or are they just rude?
I don't know it i'm the only one in this situation but since i'm on Concerta (6 weeks) (which works very well on me, btw), everytime I make a small mistake (just any mistake, not necessarity an "ADHD type" of mistake) those few who know i'm on meds, especially my boyfried, notice it and he's like "OMG 36mg is not enough, OMG you need like 400mg!". Am I the only one going through this?

Re: Do people around you expect you to be perfect on your meds? Or are they just rude
The only time my husband questioned my dosage was when I accidentally scraped the car along the side of the parking garage.
Actually, he was pretty chill about it. Got a little upset, but then let it go saying he now has a "get out of jail free card" for the next time he messes up. :p Uhm... But no. Meds certainly don't turn me into the perfect Stepford wife. :p Anyway, that's completely uncalled for on his part. You should inform him that the meds help manage symptoms to make them less severe, but they don't cure them. There's still days on the meds I don't pay attention to details, particularly on Fridays. He needs to love you just as much and be just as patient off the meds as he does on the meds. |
Re: Do people around you expect you to be perfect on your meds? Or are they just rude
I think he needs to be told very grimly to stfu. That is intolerable and so disrespectful.
Tell him, he's being as ***, if he makes up any reason, IGNORE it, with a cool stare. Repeat that it's disrespectful and you expect it to stop. There can be no argument |
Re: Do people around you expect you to be perfect on your meds? Or are they just rude
Tell him to go f**k himself. You are who you are NOT because of meds but because you are human.

Re: Do people around you expect you to be perfect on your meds? Or are they just rude
Well,
I recently went back to meds, however... My friends are telling me i need to increase my dosage on what I am now on (Adderal XR 5 MG)... But I am pretty sure there right... I am so ****** that we are doing such a crazy low dosage. I want 10 mg ir 3x daily. |
Re: Do people around you expect you to be perfect on your meds? Or are they just rude
No, he's just an insolent jerk.
No one makes any comment about me on meds, probably because they can't get a word in edge wise. Which they probably prefer than my usual 'euuaaaarrr!' |
Re: Do people around you expect you to be perfect on your meds? Or are they just rude
Oh come on, he's just pulling your chain. You need to treat this with humour. Make a funny comment back when he makes comments like that. Is he really being serious, or just teasing you?

:thankyou: Thank you all for your fast replies! Well, It looked kind of like teasing and later on after my post I discussed with him and he admitted it was a joke but, when he originally said it didn't sound like a joke, he looked all exhausted and desparate and he didn't laugh... so that's why I felt like he was a bit rude. Anyway, I personally feel like 36mg really does the job, the mistake I made was not even ADHD related, and even normal people make ADHD type of mistakes sometimes, even him! I guess my conclusions here are 1)even on meds you can still make mistakes just like a normal person 2)when people know you take meds they analyse your behavior more! It's kind of annoying, thank God I didn't tell my boss or something! |
Re: Do people around you expect you to be perfect on your meds? Or are they just rude
hey hun , please dont let this get you down...as my psychiatrist said to me yesterday, and particularly with sever adhd....meds only really deal with about 50% of th problem, it is very very hard work for us to just match our NT counterparts, we will slip up, we will make mistakes, we will do stupid impulsive things whether were on 10mg or 1000000mg of meds...please just dont feel disheartened, let these a-holes say what they want and just do the best you can do....

Re: Do people around you expect you to be perfect on your meds? Or are they just rude
I know exactly what you mean, I'm on meds for 4 weeks now and got similar comments, asking if I was sure that I didn't forget taking my meds in the morning (which, okay, can happen on occasion and I did a few times, but seriously, you know I have ADD!) or when my next appointment is, so I finally get a higher dosage. We're still trying it out, so I go to a checkup every couple of weeks, and upped it from 10 to 20 to 30mg by now.
But I agree that it's sometimes just meant as a joke or some weird form of concern, and interested packed into a joke. Plus the people who know definitely analyse the behaviour more thoroughly. |
Re: Do people around you expect you to be perfect on your meds? Or are they just rude
I don't know that many people with enough insight to even think that way.
People being rude is a fact of like over which I have no control. What concerns me more is whether or not I'm impulsively being obnoxious without realizing it. tc mctavish23 (Robert) |

Next time he makes a mistake, you might consider turning the "joke" around on him...sometimes it's not so funny when it's applied back.
I'm glad you sat down and talked to him: direct discussion often goes a long way in clarifying things. Maybe your ADHD struggles were hard for him (I do not know how long you guys have been together) and he is reacting in a sensitive manner to things...but the meds are to help your ADHD out and the progress is for both of you, not just you alone. It's an adaptive process for both. |

Re: Do people around you expect you to be perfect on your meds? Or are they just rude
Meds help to treat the ADHD, sure, but even non-ADHDers make some mistakes. You won't become a superhuman by taking meds! Making some mistakes is not a ADHD-specific thing lol

Re: Do people around you expect you to be perfect on your meds? Or are they just rude
Yeah, I have to remind my old man that just because I'm crazy doesn't mean its always my fault and he's always right! It took him a bit but he's seeing that medication is treatment not a cure.

Re: Do people around you expect you to be perfect on your meds? Or are they just rude
yes. They are rude and ignorant. I'm on anti depressants and every time I'm in bad mood or feel hurt my husband says that they don't seem to be working. Or he asks me if I've taken my meds. It's so annoying. Meds don't make us perfect. They just help us to be more normal. Even nts have their off days or off moments. Grr. They are just meds not magic pills.

Re: Do people around you expect you to be perfect on your meds? Or are they just rude
Thank you again for all the support guys!! I really like this forum I feel like I'm not alone in my struggles anymore!!
p.s. It would still be cool if they really made the intelligence/superhuman pill the guy takes in the movie "Limitless" |
Re: Do people around you expect you to be perfect on your meds? Or are they just rude
the only people who know and actually remember are my family members. they dont care when i am medicated (and my brother doesnt see me on them that often since we're both in school now anyway). but sometimes they mentioned in the past, not now or recently, that there is a noticeable difference when im off them compared to on. i already knew this before they did though

I hope these same people are perfect on their coffee/smokes/food/fashion/dating/marriages as much as they but into out med "dilemia"

Re: Do people around you expect you to be perfect on your meds? Or are they just rude
meds do not eradicate all of the symptoms....... hehe if it did then these forums would not exist. Meds will alleviate the symptoms allowing you to slow down and focus better. no med is perfect.

Re: Do people around you expect you to be perfect on your meds? Or are they just rude
tell your bf to shut up. tell him to do research on med side effects. Everyone makes mistakes regardless they have ADHD or non-ADHD. if he can't stand small mistakes then he can take a hike. who the hell is he to make judgement on your? he isn't god.

Re: Do people around you expect you to be perfect on your meds? Or are they just rude
It's actually getting really annoying how people will assume I must be on my medication. I told someone I was playing a game all day and they said it must be the Ritalin, when in truth Ritalin will make me disinterested in playing video games especially when I want to be focused on reading/writing.
I suppose it's not the same thing but it's still annoying. I'm surrounded by people who think they have more flaws than me so they hardly notice when my meds are working to lessen one or more symptoms. I'm not real sure how I would feel if people started doing that. |
