Vyvance chewable pill/ splitting dosage
Greetings! We tried almost all meds and finally found Vyvance to work like a charm....almost. Problem is that he metabolizes it very fast. He used to take one at 7:00 am, would start coming off (with rebound) at noon, and then we would get a “booster” to take at noon and this would get us through the afternoon. We stopped the booster for awhile (not as academic classes in the afternoon), but when things got more rigorous again, we found that insurance will no longer cover a “booster”. Grrrr. Our psych said that that Vyvance just released a chewable extended release and called in a 60ml chewable with the intention that we could just cut in half. Our pharmacist told us “no way”, that the pill needs to be taken in its whole as the med is not distributed in the pill equally (could cut in half, but really could then take a 50 and a 10). We did not fill it, our psych is out next week, and now not sure what to do!
He suggested that we split a 60 capsule of power up instead, but that sounds hard!?!? Thanks!!

Re: Vyvance chewable pill/ splitting dosage

April 26, 2017

The makers of Vyvanse, a well-known central nervous system (CNS) stimulant used to treat ADHD in adults and children 6 years of age or older, have released a new chewable formulation — providing a new treatment option for patients who struggle to swallow pills.

The new formulation was approved by the FDA in January of 2017, and was made available to patients in early April. The chewable formulation comes in the same dosages as the non-chewable version — 10 mg, 20 mg, 30 mg, 40 mg, 50 mg, and 60 mg — and can be used interchangeably with non-chewable Vyvanse, according to Shire, the company that produces Vyvanse.

Vyvanse is a prodrug, meaning it only becomes active once metabolized in the digestive tract. For this reason, it’s important that the entire tablet be chewed before swallowing, Shire says.

“Vyvanse chewable tablets will offer an option to patients who may need an alternate form of this medication,” said Mark Rus, MS, head of the U.S. neuroscience franchise at Shire, in a press release. “With the new Vyvanse chewable formulation, we offer physicians an option to help patients who may have difficulty swallowing or would prefer a chewable tablet to help manage their condition.”

Re: Vyvance chewable pill/ splitting dosage
Thank you! I read this too, as well as our pharmacist. I am wondering then why our psychiatrist said that splitting in half was a good option, because it seems like it need to be taken whole?
