Adderall and exercise?

I have two questions about Adderall. I just started last week on Adderall XR. The results are pretty good, but I have a few questions about side effects.

First, is it okay to exercise intensely while taking Adderall? I understand it can raise blood pressure, but is it still okay to push myself just as hard? I do high intensity exercise (at 90% maximum pulse) for short spurts and I just want to ensure i'm not putting any strain on my heart or risking anything serious. I also do heavy weightlifting which raises blood pressure pretty drastically for short periods.

Second, i'm having a bit of a strange side effect. I'm honestly not sure if this is a coincidence or if it could indicate something is going on. About a half hour after taking my dosage, I start getting random but sharp pains in my jaw. Looking at neck anatomy, the pain is right around where my submandibular gland is. I am guessing this is just a coincidence, but i'm just checking to see if this a symptom anyone else has had and if it's anything to worry about. The only strange thing is this has happened every time I took the medication, about a half hour after, and it occurs on and off for as long as the medication is in effect. It more or less goes away later in the evening.

Thanks a lot!

I've only been on the stuff 5 days a week for a month or so, so I'm no expert, but I am the same way. I exercise intensely for 2 hours 4 days a week. It was harder to get going and I had less energy but I got it done. It's weird how amphetamine would give most people major energy but for those with ADD it makes us less energetic and more easily tired. As a result, it's tougher to exercise.

It has gone well for the most part except there was one time after I was done I couldn't get my pulse down. It was still around 110 an hour after my workout. (My sitting pulse is usually around 60) I asked my DR and he said to wait 3 hours after my last Adderall dosage

Re: Adderall and exercise?

After a year I don't really notice any heart related side affects so I don't think twice about it. The first few months and the whole time I was on IR I wouldn't have wanted to take a dose and then go for a run right away. Not that I thought it was dangerous but just counterproductive.

It seems jaw clenching and teeth grinding is common when taking Adderall. I noticed I was clenching and sucking my tonge, (gross I know but don't know how else to decsribe it), basically sucking in with my mouth closed while clenching my teeth. I did it when I was focused on something and only noticed that my jaw hurt and I was getting headaches. For me it seemed to be a matter of breaking the habit, and maybe acclimating to the medication. I also started sleeping with a drug store night guard. The kind you boil and bite down on to fit your teeth. This made my jaw stop hurting and the headaches went away too. Like I said this only lasted a few months really. I became conscious of it and stopped or it wore off. I catch myself every once in a while though.

Hope this helps,

C

It sounds like your best shot at finding an answer to such an obscure side effect (even though obscure side effects from adderall seem to be so common).. would be to find the Dr. who specializes in the submandibular gland, and ask him what effects amphetamines could potentially have on it.
