Studying for CPA - Adderrall & its many side effects

I am at a loss for what to do here. I am currently studying for the CPA exam and working full time. When I get away from my accounting desk job, the last thing I want to do is study or think about accounting. My doctor prescribed me Adderrall to help me focus.

At first it was working well - I saw no side effects and only wanted to study! Now, I am experiencing crazy things like my hands turning red and swelling up as well as my neck and chest breaking out into hot red splotches. It is SO EMBARRASSING!! I can't be put in any situation now without my neck and chest turning red.

I went back to my doctor and he gave me Celexa. He said the redness was caused from the increase in anxiety from the Adderrall. It is helping a little, but the red splotches still appear.

He also suggested switching to the time-release Adderrall if this does not solve the problem.

Has anyone had any experiences like this? What can I do other than look like an idiot and wear turtle necks every single day?

Will switching to Vyvanse alleviate this?

Any suggestions are VERY appreciated.

Hi there -

It was impossible for me to pass the CPA exam while working full time. I was on Adderall and experienced the same issues you're describing, my face would turn red and I'd get really hot at times for no reason. It only helped during the work day, I still had to study at night and after 8 hrs of work..impossible.

I also tried Vyvanse along with Wellbutrin XL which was a lot better. No anxiety and no red face but still wasn't enough to help me study + work.

Yes, I'd recommend you ask to switch to Vyvanse or Dexedrine

Any way, it sounds like you may have increased blood pressure from the stimulants. One type of med that really helped me with that are beta-blockers. Maybe ask your doc what he thinks, but I know its not an uncommon complement to stimulants.

Patient: Dr, I don't feel like I have enough time in the day. I have to work and study for my CPA. I am tired at night and don't really feel like it after work..

Doctor: You know what works great for that? Adderall!

MyTide, I don't mean to tease, but were you diagnosed with ADD or something like it? How did you get the Rx?

being a CPA really sounds great when you have a great degree! You need to be patient on becoming one coz it's a very lucrative job way ahead right? You can be employed to any company that has specific functions in many kinds of business.

i tried accountancy...i failed terribly...didnt make it past the first month of apprenticeship before my boss asked me if i had some kind of learning disability....accountancy has been checked off of my career possibilities....best of luck with yours though
