Thumbs up Observed son on meds for first time

I went and observed my son's class today. This is the first time I've seen him on meds -- until now I have just heard second hand about the effects.

They definitely seem to be working. Not like a different personality, but very little fidgeting, paying attention to the class, speaking loudly and clearly (he had a presentation to give).

The teacher says he's been participating in class more actively, and I can see that it's partly because he's paying attention more, and partly because he's more confident. He has told me that he "feels smarter" now...

So, the first part of our experiment over, we are going to move to two half -doses a day, either this week or the next. (The teacher said he tends to start fading after lunch with his current one half-dose per day).

I'm not sure if it's the increased confidence or what, but he also seems to be reading better at home, when not on meds. I hope that he can make some good gains in his reading over the next couple of months.

So glad to hear that the meds continue to help -- it's also nice to see it first hand. For what it's worth I noticed that when my meds wore off there was still a kind of organizing effect from having been on them during the day. Maybe the less chaotic thinking, receiving information experience carries over to less stress and more organized structure even when meds are out of one's system. I also found that the cummulative effect of being on meds over a period of times (weeks, months) also seemed to help my overall organization framework.

He is taking 5 mg Ritalin, once a day. We are planning to up it to two times a day, but we need to talk to his psych (again) because he says that sometimes he feels sick to his stomach after taking his morning dose.
