How Much is Too Much??

I have been prescribed Adderall for the past 10 years and recently stopped seeing my prescribing psychiatrist as well as quit taking the adderall because my dose was so high I could no longer tell if I was taking it because I really did need it or because I had unknowingly become dependant....

My prescribed dose for several years was 240 mg daily.... Four 30mg pills in the am and 4 more in the pm. Has anyone else been prescribed anywhere near that much, if so, how did that work out for you? Thanks

I've never heard of anyone taking a dose that high.

Yes, I have heard almost that high but they were recovering meth free base addicts. In the end it never worked and they ended up in rehab. Did you not have withdrawals? Or u should've weaned or it could have been very dangerous. That's a ton of adderall! Id wish u would tell more of the story.you made a wise choice but need to still be under close medical watch -good luck, I hear many therapeutic doses of 90mg, I hear few up to 120mg, but never that without a quack or some expert Dr that feels comfy with very high doses, but over 120, ive never seen it end well, your receptors are so numb, be safe

Wow, I thought 4 10mg Dex pills a day was overkill.

Man...I thoght 30mg of XR ONCE a day was to high for me...thats crazy.

Some people just have a very fast metabolism. Back on Ritalin I had to take much higher doses then approved by the authorities. Happens.

I've heard of doses that high but it's really rare, my psych told me he didn't feel comfortable going over 60mg xr a day(3x20mg) but then again I don't feel like I need to go higher.

not insinuating you're meth addict (just my experience)...but how did you sleep...I have to take dex in the evening so I dont have rebound insomnia

It's complex science of dependence/tolerance, which can lead to addiction BUT addiction is different than dependence.

Did adderall ever work? Switch meds and exercise. Your receptors could be numbed, much like a heroin addict going through wds. Metabolism could be a factor, liver enzymes OR if you are taking thorazine- dopamine receptor antagonist...........

I don't know but you need something other than Adderall. Did your Dr take you off? please resond..very curious

WOW that is a high dose. Have you experienced any withdrawl symptoms after coming off from a dose that high?

I take 20 mg XR (10mg morning, 10mg afternoon) and every that feels STRONG to me. I am not a small guy either, I weigh 200lbs and am 6 feet tall. Granted i've never taken a stimulant before and i've only been on a month, I think 240mg would probably kill me.

How long are you planning to stay off for, and are you planning to start up again? I would think if you take some time off (maybe a few months or even half year) your tolerance could reset, and you could get the same results at a smaller dose.

Depends on how long you've taken it. When I took Adderall the very first time, it was 5mg, it was pretty bad. I had to lay down because my pulse was so high ( 130, normally 70-75) and my legs were shaking and I couldn't walk straight. Now I take 15-20 and it's ok. I don't feel much anymore. But, yes, 240...
Althought it's actually "only" 120 mg. Sometimes I take 2 15mg pills, too, because it needs to last longer ( Don't have many XR's ).

I would get off the pills as soon as possible. Try to find other ways to cope with it. ADD or ADHD? ADD without pills is fine, imo, unless you're in College or have some job where you need to closely focus for a long time ( programming etc. ). Don't know about ADHD, though.

I met a guy in a support group that takes 160mg/day via 20mg ir's, that's 240 adderall ir 20s a month/this guy had hella tolerance, said, "started taking ritalin in 70s, and seen the same dr since childhood" - ADHD and addiction specialist too, he claims...wow, 240mg's is a hop, skip and jump from 160mg. If only they made 20mg dexedrine ir's.....that's one of the few reasons my dr 'holds' back a little on dex, I think he remembers 'black beauties' and has a notion a 15 span will rock your world, jeez, it's been a battle...

I don't understand how some of you only take meds on a prn basis, or holidays.
