Washington Post Article About Controversial Proposed DSM Updates

http://www.washingtonpost.com/nation...eck=0&denied=1

My brain is out of service for the night, but I thought some other folks may wish to discuss it.

Re: Washington Post Article About Controversial Proposed DSM Updates

I just skimmed it, so I don't have a clear understanding either. I noticed as I skimmed through the links within the article that they're accepting public feedback regarding the proposed changes.

They need to stop updating the DSM like it's a software update. DSM's only legitimacy is public perception. Just leave it at 4.

Re: Washington Post Article About Controversial Proposed DSM Updates

I think "unmanageable" was trying to sound the alert regarding changes in the DSM-5 regarding ADD/HD etc.

Here's another link: http://www.additudemag.com/addnews/70/6914.html

I don't know enough about ADD/HD spectrum but I am going to do a bit of research because I do not want to see the diagnosis changed so that some with ADD/HD get ignored or reclassified as unaffected.

From what I have read so far, it appears to be a tug-of-war between those who want to reduce the number of psychological diagnoses due to the "belief" that people are not really "sick" (i.e. those who think anyone with a psychological illness is faking or just seeking public monies) and the pharmaceutical industry that wants more people labeled as "sick" in order to sell their products.

Re: Washington Post Article About Controversial Proposed DSM Updates

The proposed criteria for ADHD under the DSM-5 would make it easier to be diagnosed as an adult, and it's probable many that people diagnosed as PI would meet the new criteria for combined type.

Re: Washington Post Article About Controversial Proposed DSM Updates

I heard the DSM5 is going to include huge female testicle growth that must have been present since childhood for adult diagnosis...

But you must have a careful and complete paper trail otherwise you cannot be diagnosed.
