Re: Under a 100 Dollar grocery list for month?

At one time, based on the ideas in the attachment, my meals (3x) were often under $1. The ability to store canned and packaged goods as well as freezing items was important.

I think that misleading people into trying to come up with grocery ideas for your not-limited limited budget without letting them know that it's all just a lark to you is rude.
Saving money in any area of your life is a good trait to develop.

Re: Under a 100 Dollar grocery list for month?

If i could i would get pie. I love pie so much, i can eat a whole pie all by myself. I like pumpkin pie and apple pie. Its so hard to find a good pie though. When i do find one its too costly for my budget. I get on my hands and knees and pray every night that pie will be affordable one day so i can just eat the hell out of it all the time. Yumz

If you frequent the same grocery stores and look for sales, watch for sales on large cans of crushed pineapple, cherry pie filling and boxed yellow cake mix. These are the main ingredients for Dump Cake.

Quote:
1 (20 ounces) can crushed pineapple, undrained
1 (21 ounces) can prepared more fruit cherry pie filling
1 (18.25 ounces) box yellow cake mix
2 sticks (1 cup or 16 Tablespoons) of butter or margarine, each cut into 12 slices
1/4 cup chopped nuts (pecans, walnuts, pistachios, cashews, peanuts, etc., your choice) and optional

Preparation:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (325 for glass baking dish). Have a 9 by 13-inch baking pan ready.

Dump undrained pineapple rectangle baking pan and spread it out evenly.

Using a spoon, dump globs of cherry pie filling evenly on top of the pineapple.

Sprinkle the cake mix evenly over the top of cherry and pineapple mix.

Cut butter into slices with a butter knife and place slices evenly over cake mix.

Sprinkle nuts on top if you're using them.

Bake for one hour.

To serve, scoop cake out with a large spoon like a cobbler, and dump it on a nice plate. A scoop of vanilla ice cream is delicious with dump cake. Serve warm or cold.

Yield: about 10 to 12 servings

Re: Under a 100 Dollar grocery list for month?

One summer we lived near a grocery store that had lemons and bacon really cheap ...so we lived on homemade lemonade to drink and BLTs to eat .....

and a BLT can be pretty cheap ...3 strips of bacon, a couple of tomato slices, couple of pieces of lettuce, some mayo and you're good to go ....and I use shredded lettuce .....that can be used for putting on lots of other dishes ....any Mexican food can be lightened up by lettuce ......It is usually pretty heavy food....

Speaking of that, I need to buy some cheap (semi)bulk nuts off Ebay or something, and make my own nut butters and nut butter cookies. Never made my own nut butters, but I'd like to try it.

$ opportunity - sell your homemade nut butters and nut butter cookies at the farmer's market on Saturday mornings.

Re: Under a 100 Dollar grocery list for month?

Fruits and veggies are wonderful, but for me, they are often a waste of money, because if we do not get them eaten up, they will spoil on you and then it is just like throwing money down the drain.

Rice, noodles, macaroni, and soups are always staples at our house, because you can throw them together to make some kind of a casserole. Hamburger helper is wonderful and you can make a couple meals out of it if you live alone. Tuna helper as well.

If you have a can of tuna, cut up a hardboiled egg, some onion, toss in some pickle relish and miracle whip, and you have a yummy tuna salad. If you put cheese on it and cook it like a grilled cheese, it is quite good.

Living alone you are almost better off with canned or frozen veggies because you can use only what you need. Fresh veggies are great if you can get them used up. Onions keep a long time. So do potatoes.

Tater tot casserole is cheap and tasty. Brown some burger with onion, drain and mix in cream of mushroom soup and green beans, and top with tater tots and cheese.

Meatloaf is good because you can have leftover meatloaf sandwiches (yum!)

If you go to a store with a deli, you can have them slice very small amounts of meat and cheeses for sandwiches. Most will be happy to slice you as little as a half pound of several different things. Most deli meats are nutritious, too.

If you have space, a little garden is a great thing. We have a big garden. The heat took out my peas, but I have radishes, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, broccoli, cabbage, and watermelons planted. I meant to get beans in, too. If you have a friend who gardens, they will often have an abundance of veggies and will be glad to share!

If you can have several friends go in together with you on a side of beef or a hog. The upfront cost is somewhat daunting, but when a bunch of you split it, its not bad, and the price per pound is a fraction of what you would pay in a store.

Eggs are always a bargain.....so are pancakes. We often enjoy a meal of pancakes or french toast for supper, with eggs and bacon or sausage.

Raman noodles are extremely cheap and can be doctored up in many ways. I used to have a recipe for a salad that used raman noodles. If you dont have much in the cupboard, make a box of kraft mac and cheese, as directed, and then toss in a can of cream of mushroom soup, a can of peas, and a can of tuna. Cheap and filling.

You can brown hamburger or chicken and freeze it in little ziplocks for later use, when you are trying to toss a meal together quickly.

Brown hamburger, mix in tomato soup and a veggie of your choice. Top with buttermilk biscuits (cooked) and sliced cheese, and bake. Easy and filling.

Pork chops tend to be cheap, and they are delicious grilled, fried, or baked.

There is a thing you can find in the frozen section called a turkey roast. It comes in a little tin that you bake it in. It is apparently like ground turkey with some kind of gravy. I am not sure i WANT to know. LOL. But hey...its tasty!

You can always toss some ham or a sliced up hot dog in some mac and cheese.

If i can think of anything else I will sure write it down. I have done a lot of trying to throw a meal together quickly for hungry kids and hubby. I hope this may help you.

Re: Under a 100 Dollar grocery list for month?

FYI for shaving cream and razors check out double edge edge razors on amazon and the shaving cream with the brush you can get 100 razor blades for under 10 bucks. I started using ones of these razors and love it and no longer spend loads of money on the "newest" 5 blade razor.

Re: Under a 100 Dollar grocery list for month?

The recipe Joker Girl shared for browning hamburger, mixing in soup and
veg and topping with biscuits ... I've always used mushroom soup instead
of tomato soup. You can also top with mashed potatoes (instant) instead
of biscuits or with tater tots, or serve it on toast.

And I know you prefer pie but there are several recipes on the internet for
making Cake in a Coffee Mug using store bought cake mixes. You could
put some fruit in the bottom of the mug first, have a cake/pie thing.

Re: Under a 100 Dollar grocery list for month?

Get them Little Debbie or whatever kind they are pies that come in a box. They arent the most healthy i suppose but man they are delicious and cheap!

Apple is pretty good, so is Blueberry...Cherry is alright....Peach is TO DIE FOR....Chocolate and Lemon are pretty good, too. If you can find the Vanilla ones, they are super good.

These things are like 50 cents or something.

You like those things? I don't really. I used to love McDonalds cherry pies,
2 for $1. Now all they have is apple and they're not as good. The ones at
KFC are better.

I splurge once a week and spend $1 for a Caramel Apple Empanada (fried
pie) at Taco Bell. Those things are really super good!

Re: Under a 100 Dollar grocery list for month?

I can't post a list for under $100 because the price of groceries in Australia is amongst the most expensive in the world. Plus I live in WA so there's even more reason for price gouging.

To get by when we were poor students on $100 a fortnight groceries (nearly 20 years ago) we used to make spaghetti bolognaise and eat that for the whole week. For 2 of us we'd use 2kg of the cheapest mince we could find, as many veggies as we could afford, a big tin of tomatoes and some tomato paste and mixed herbs. We'd buy pasta in bulk coz it was cheaper.

The other thing we used to do (which I hated but we were desperate) was go to Woolies on a Saturday arvo at about 4pm (they closed at 5pm). We'd get the markdowns on the bread, meat and veggies. It was awful but you've gotta do what you have to to survive.

We used to be able to get pork roast for $2 a kilo (unheard of now) and eat that for days on end with boiled cabbage for veggies and pasta.

Do you have any garden where you can grow some herbs for flavouring? I have mint, thyme and oregano. They grow well with no care or attention.
