Please help- In Boston Dr. ceased prescription

Hello all,

I will keep it brief, but about 8 years ago I was diagnosed with ADD. I refused to take any medication thinking that "I was better than a drug." After going through school and finding a job, I suddenly realized that procrastination and disorganization were not going to cut it to move forward in the work-force.

In October 2011 I finally went to an MD and was prescribed prescription medication. I also landed a very nice job around the same time. I was on the lowest prescribed dose of the medication, but still felt as if it worked wonders.

Fast forward to tonite, where my MD said she is unwilling to prescribe me another prescription, "because she doesn't think I have ADD."

I cannot describe to you how devastating this is. I have been the top performer in my position for, and recently took a job at another firm based on my performance at my last firm (I am a lawyer).

I know there is no possible way I can perform at the level I have been performing at or close to it. My doctor said because I am on the lowest dose that it has "been a placebo effect."

I am sad and devastated. She said that she will refer me to one of her colleagues for a second opinion, which will take 6-8 weeks.

What am I supposed to do? I am scared.

I recommend you seek out a second opinion yourself. Start searching for psychiatrists in your area. Make it clear that it's important you be seen relatively urgently.

If you call around, you might get lucky and manage to find an appointment within a week. Yes, it may be expensive and cause issues with your insurance, but it's more important to get the meds you need if you actually need them.

I agree you should get a second opinion yourself. My doctor takes appointments in one to two weeks any doesn't take any insurance. Its expensive that way but will also prevent you from being labeled as a drug seeker from your insurance finding out you have gone to more than one doctor after not being given a prescription at the first.

Any time doctors ever give you any kind of trouble, it's time for a second opinion. This is your life you're dealing with, you're the one living it not them, so they can't really know what you're going through. Also, the doctor is working for you, you're the boss, so the moment your doctor forgets that, it's time to find a new doctor. ADD is not a joke, it is serious business. I saw every single neurologist in San Diego for my epilepsy, and I've been to probably 5 in the bay area. Find somebody you can work with, if your doctor isn't completely on-board and trying to help you, than you're not getting what you need.

A second opinion is definitely the way to go. I'm sorry this is happening to you. Hopefully you can find another doctor and get an appointment soon.

Get a second & a third opinion, after the third stop If they say no ADHD. Then it isn't ADHD.If you get two ADHD diagnosis from 2 different physicians(& they go no you have ADHD.) then get on the phone & scream at the original doc til' your lungs hurt.Problem solved
