Re: Can I just ask my psychiatrist for meds?

He never showed up. I waited for 1.5 hours after which I was told that my appointment had been cancelled. Apparently, they left me a message but I never got it. Well, I'm not very good at regularly checking my voicemail.

I'm so annoyed. I don't want to do anything anymore. I almost miss being depressed. Whenever I was this low, at least I could just shut off, kill the emotions with food, alcohol or sleep. Now I don't want any of those things anymore. I just don't want anything. I don't want to die but I think, I'm tired of existing.

Yeah, I know: www.overreaction.com

Avj, thanks for that list. I can't believe how accurately it describes my unmedicated depression state and my medicated (with anti depressants) state. Each and every of the symptoms of serotonin deficiency apply, even heat intolerance (though I still can't stand the heat).

Similarly with the dopamine/norepinephrine deficiency list all symptoms apply but I had them as well before I started taking anti-depressants.

Do you have a source? I'd love to see the whole article.

Hmmm. I wonder what class of drug might work best for the apathetic type of depression? That's a toughie.

Considering the strength of your symptoms, the government and doctor ******* you over, the fact that you earned two degrees unmedicated, and your Ph.D thread yesterday, I was thinking more like underreaction.com.

Haha, I know Sarah. I wish you'd been there to tell them to **** off!!!

I'm seriously considering going private now. Even if I do manage to see the NHS psychiatrist again, he has made it very clear that all he is going to suggest is CBT. There is no ADHD specialist in my area so I called up two out of area ones. They require a referral from my GP. I hope I'll get that.

I just want to know. If they say I don't have ADHD, then I'll accept that and somehow continue floundering along my way in life but I need to hear it from someone whose judgment I can trust. Uggh...I just want to know.

Re: Can I just ask my psychiatrist for meds?

I don't know how the UK medical system works, but maybe you could start a thread asking for UK folks to post (or maybe PMing you would be better maybe, I don't know...) who they see, especially if their doctor isn't so hesitant to prescribe stims?

Re: Can I just ask my psychiatrist for meds?

From what I could ascertain, I am a little unusual (from the average patient) in that for some reason my psychiatrist and I haggle/struggle/argue through my various medication changes. I have strong opinions on what I am willing to try and what I really like, while my psychiatrist has her own [professional] opinions on what she thinks would be best. I think most people just accept their doctor's medication determination, but I don't. :P

I've got my final appointment with the psychiatrist tomorrow, where he is going to put together a treatment plan for me.

He thinks all my problems are due to depression. I think, I might have ADHD. Either way, he thinks even if I do have ADHD, the best treatment option for me would be CBT. I've tried CBT (just 2 sessions, then the therapist dismissed me because I couldn't keep up the appointments regularly ) and I'm not too hopeful this time round either.

Can I ask him if I can just try stimulant meds to see if they help? I'm guessing not because even if they should help but I actually don't have ADHD, I probably shouldn't be taking them. The problem is I don't trust his diagnosis (he seems pretty ignorant about ADHD) and I don't know what else to do to help myself (assuming that CBT won't help). I guess, I've got nothing to lose by asking, but I'm still hesitant about it.

Sigh and please don't flame me for being a performance enhancing stimulants seeking junkie.

Any inputs?
Depression is something that often goes hand in hand with ADHD also other things like dyslexia co-exist with it, but everyone is different, I am dyslexic too .A lot of psychiatrists are ignorant but talk to him/her and tell them how you feel ,just because they don't know a lot about it doesn't mean that they're not prepared to listen and learn .ADHD meds are heavy duty so I don’t blame Drs for being careful , it was about a year and a half after my first appointment that I got my first ADHD meds ,patience is not one of my strong points strangely enough .
