Explaining ADHD
I'm sure there are numerous threads with similar information already available on the forum, but I can't seem to find exactly what I'm looking for.
Which is, resources either online or textbooks etc which gives an understanding of adult adhd for those in adult education. Since most information out there is regarding kids with adhd, I imagine school teachers are more aware of adhd and how it affects every day life than for example university lecturers and employers out in the real world. My course lecturers have never had another student with adhd and they do not understand the way it affects me or how it affects each aspect of life, all they have is there stereotypical ideology of what adhd is and what it entails, and we all know how wrong that can be. So I was wondering if anybody knew of any good resources which I could share with my university lecturers which would help them to understand things a little better?

Re: Explaining ADHD
There are a few good biographical sketches in Driven to Distraction that might work for your purposes.
For example: “Oh,” she answered, “that is about a cough drop someone left on the dashboard of our car. The other day I saw the cough drop and thought, I’ll have to throw that away. When I arrived at my first stop, I forgot to take the cough drop to a trash can. When I got back into the car, I saw it and thought, I’ll throw it away at the gas station. The gas station came and went and I hadn’t thrown the cough drop away. Well, the whole day went like that, the cough drop still sitting on the dashboard. When I got home, I thought, I’ll take it inside with me and throw it out. In the time it took me to open the car door, I forgot about the cough drop. It was there to greet me when I got into the car the next morning, Jeff was with me. I looked at the cough drop and burst into tears. Jeff asked me why I was crying, and I told him it was because of the cough drop. He thought I was losing my mind. ‘But you don’t understand,’ I said, ‘my whole life is like that. I see something that I mean to do and then I don’t do it. It’s not only trivial things like the cough drop; it’s big things, too.’ That is why I cried.” |

Re: Explaining ADHD
It's a bit dated, but the advise and examples are still useful for an intro to ADHD. I'm not sure how useful it would be to any regulars on this forum except for having a few copies to give to curious friends/family.
