Kidney Stones

Who else can attest to the joy these bring?

I have had the "pleasure" of having kidney stones. Did you have a question? Not sure I can answer any questions, I haven't had a stone in awhile but I do still pass what I call "grains." I drink alot of fluids and avoid heavy dairy products and that seems to work for me.

Re: Kidney Stones

This is my second one, and I am only 18! My last one was just 2 months ago in May

I went to bed around 2 am (it's summer, I start college soon, might as well do it while I still can before I am thrust into adulthood) and was sleeping horribly just before I woke up at 8:30, something I would not normally do. Of course it was integrated into my dream but as soon as I woke up I knew what it was.

I've experienced one worse pain and that was a few shots of lidocaine, which feels like fire in your skin.

I hope you don't have more. Well, just don't go giving birth is all I've got to say.

Re: Kidney Stones

Friend at work had them in the worst way. He tells me to stay away from dark soda and other stuff. He had to have them sonic blasted out. It ruined one of his kidneys. The pain he describes seems very bad as well.

Re: Kidney Stones

So I finally decided to go to the doctors because of the pain. I asked for some stronger pain killers and the doctor walked in with an attitude going, "You look way to calm to be having a kidney stone." He went and checked my urine and came back with a completely different tone and handed me a new prescription as I walked out the door.

The nerve of some people. Maybe because I am a teenager. Maybe because it was my first time there. Maybe because I wanted a stronger scheduled medicine. I am just tired of being discriminated against because I am a teenager...

Well, gee! I hope he at least apologized to you (I'm not holding my breath)

I'm glad you got what you needed in the end. . . sometimes I don't think we present as "typical" in terms of emotional reaction *or* tolerance to pain, so he probably just assumed based on your age and your presentation that you just wanted to score some Oxy's.

Fortunately, in this particular case, the labs don't lie.

In both cases the pain was extreme at first but over time died down, but of course I was taking pain killers both times, so I was able to function, walk around, and appear normal. This is probably what led him to believe I just wanted to get high... Good thing they made me pee in a cup or I would have walked out with a prescription for Cebocap...

I feel the next time I see him, if I must, he will be much more willing to listen to me.

Re: Kidney Stones

Oh yes I know the joy of kidney stones. I got them when I was pregnant with child #3, 18 years ago. 2 of them have passed but one is still hanging around.

I have to say between unmedicated, natural childbirth and kidney stones, I'd do the childbirth again. Kidney stones are wretched.

Child birth must not be as horrific as most women make it out to be than?

Re: Kidney Stones

Sorry, sounds awful!

I never had a kidney stone, but I did have a gall bladder attack one time. Hyperboleandahalf's pain scale diagram with "all the numbers" on this page looks like a like a slide show of my face that day from the time I woke up feeling not right, to arriving at the ER not quite in tears, to wailing for more pain medicine or a swift death. Granted, I might have been a little disinhibited from the narcotics, but it really did feel like my guts were being ripped out for about an hour.

At the intake, I was still pretty composed, but I think they believed me right away because I was sweating and my blood pressure and HR were really high. I'm so glad they didn't wait to get the scan results before giving me the pain shots.

No it's pretty bad.

But kidney stones are THAT bad, and you don't get to meet your long awaited child at the end.

Can they refuse someone pain meds (ie a morphine iv, not a script for narcotics) if someone comes in complaining of severe pain? I mean they can obviously refuse someone that blatantly wants it for recreational purposes. But if someone walks in and begs them to just get rid of the pain for now, as they run tests, can they refuse? If they can, is it wrong for them to do so?
