I'm "addicted" to repeating stuff I'm good at. No real addictions if you don't count being a gamer.

It likely helps I have a major mental thing with loss of self / control. So being drunk is not very fun for me. I try to avoid it. Let alone other more illicit substances.

I may have more worry and anxiety aimed at avoiding being addicted too. That'd make a difference.

substance abuse is a psychiatric disorder, tell him all your problems

and yes people with adhd have a much higher rate of substance abuse

"Addiction" is not a term that's limited to substances. It includes behaviors and activities as well.
