an "I've taken my night meds and I'm bleary eyed" rant

So, I'm at a Con this weekend with DH and my best friend (who we'll call CE). I was here last year and it was AWFUL, but I think a lot of it was anxiety related... anyway, so far, this year is kicking a*s- it's tons of fun. What's best is that CE is selling things! Which hasn't happened to date at cons that she's vendored at. Poor thing is sick tho and missed all the fun tonight

We are friends with one of the big Steampunk production companies in the southern USA and tonight, we ran to the grocery store for foods since we were starving and poor. We started talking about something, and they brought up ADD... and they had different silly acronyms like ADOS (attention deficit, ooo! shiny!) or ADOA (attention deficit, ooo! armor!) which is a bit amusing, since I tend to that a LOT, but at the same time, mildly offensive to me.

Am I just being over sensitive? I mean, yeah, I have ADHD, and maybe they do too, I don't ask my friends' medical histories, but to make light of something that is SO much more than just being easily distracted kinda rubs me wrong.

Of course, on top of that, we were exclusively invited to hang out with a group of really cool people this evening (cooler because they didn't actually know us), and I had to decline because I can't *****ing drink w/ the meds I'm on.

Talk about annoying! I am FINALLY beginning to be social and people are enjoying my company and I have to *****ing decline because of my stupid mental problems. Gah. I had DH apologize and let them know it wasn't a lack of wanting too, it was a lack of me not being able to drink and feeling out of place with those who are. It's hard to explain, but I'm sure y'all get it.

Oh I totally get it. I am choosing to stay away from alcohol too. Been at a few social gatherings and it sucks, but I don't drink much anymore anyway. Turned down beer at a kids birthday party...kids playing, sun was out, beer was cold. Oh well. I eventually flat out told them that I had enough social time, and was ready to go home.

And no, I don't think you are being sensitive about the jokes. Same as racial jokes imo...you tell them you encourage the prejudice. Sure, its all in good fun, but there is a message being told that isn't so funny is it.

ADHD - if you don't have it then you can't fully understand it IMHO.

I understand that people want to make jokes, but if somebody waves a set of keys next to my head then I'll react the same as anybody else... with mild annoyance! Still, I don't mind jokes at my expense if somebody knows me well. Of course as an Englishman living in Canada I'm well used to that kind of ribbing. :-)

I can relate. Sometimes I love meeting other people but when I feel out of place or just out of it, then it's torture. Funnily enough, it usually depends on my mood rather than the people I'm supposed to meet.

What conference did you go to? Not Comic Con by any chance??? (Been watching too much big bang theory. Is there even anything like Comic Con???)

Not Comic Con, although I would LOVE to, but something much smaller and similar... and in the midwest Tons of fun though. Even if I'm exhausted this weekend.
