Dosage advice

So my pdoc has been great so far. We tried concerta (With no real improvement). Now I am onto adderall xr. He prescribed me 90 10mg pills with the instruction to slowly step up over time and when I find what works to call him and we can fine tune things from there. (that's the short version of things)

Currently I am trying 20mg in the morning, but it seems after 5 hours I am back to my old self. Reading around the forums it seems most people take an AM dose and a PM dose. My pdoc said as long as there are no side effects I am ok to step up to the next dosage level (just don't go over 40mg without talking to him).

So what I am wondering now is, should I step up to 30mg in the am to see if it lasts longer? Or should I try a second dose at the 5 hr mark? And if I do go the second dosage route, should I then try another 10mg or 20mg?

And one more final question is, should I go the second dose route. I in theory will be good until 3pm ish. But when my school starts back up next month I will be in class until 930pm some evenings. What then? My pdoc said something about possibly adding an ir version once we have what works dialed in, but wouldent I all ready possibly be at the 40mg "max"???

even though the xr is supposed to last 6-8 hours I only get about 4 so I take 20mg of xr 3 times a day.

Thanks and that is kind if what I am thinking the best option will be.

The second option I was thinking about was 20 x2 a day then maybe an IR for the evenings I have class? Although I never considered the 20 x3 a day option ( should my doc agree).
